- This 1965 Fender Vibrolux Reverb amplifier is a superb example of what many musicians and amplifier experts consider the greatest combo amp that Fender ever made. The ToneQuest Report, the bible for guitarist gear reviews, called the mid sixties Vibrolux Reverb the ultimate low wattage Fender amp in their "Under 40 Watts of Whoop Ass" comparision article. Lots of famous guitarists agree. Just a few of the guitarists who have used vintage Fender Vibroluxes onstage and in the studio include Pete Townsend, Elliot Easton, Roy Buchanan, Jeff Buckley, Nigel Hendroff, Ira Kaplan, Dustin Kensrue, Steve Sladkowski, Ray LaMontagne, Eric Krasno, Nicholaus Arson, Margaret Glaspy, and many others. Even John Lennon played an older version of the Vibrolux when he was first playing out with the Beatles. There's a great video of Joe Bonamassa • Joe Bonamassa - with a... playing an old Telecaster through a Vibrolux that gives you an idea of how clean, sweet, and rich the tone of the amp can be. You can also see Roy Buchanan play through a Fender Vibrolux on Austin City Limits in 1976. • Roy Buchanan - Live fr...
While a Vibrolux makes a great amp for rock or jazz players, it's especially prized by blues players for its magnificent tone. Stevie Ray Vaughan used an older version of the Vibrolux, the Vibroverb, to get his signature overdriven sound. It's quite easy to achieve the same kinds of bluesy tones of players like Derek Trucks, BB King, Dickey Betts, or John Mayer with this amp. It has 35 watts of power, so it's loud enough to be heard in a nightclub or a small hall, with a wonderful clean tone, but you can turn it up enough to start to overdrive the sound if you like without blowing everyone out of the room.
This particular Fender Vibrolux has two brand new Jensen C10R 10" www.jensentone... speakers to make it as close to original in sound without sacrificing reliability. A blackface Vibrolux with Jensen speakers is a simply fantastic amp, and the reverb is to die for.
Everything in the amp is original, except for a few details. The speakers are new, appropriate replacements for the original Jensens. One of the original "witch's hat" volume knobs was replaced. We replaced a missing plastic cap on the speaker jack on the back of the amp with a faithful replica. The two-button foot switch is new, and works perfectly. We removed the old, dangerous ungrounded power cord and replaced it with a long, heavy-duty three-prong cord. We grounded the cord to the chassis properly, and removed the infamous "death capacitor" to make the amp safer. It also makes the amp much quieter, and removed the hum you'd hear if the amp was placed near a fluorescent light. We've looked up the serial number stamps on all the components inside the amp, and they all match up with 1965, except the power transformer that dates to 1964.
Overall, the amp is in fine shape for a mid-sixties amp. The grill cloth is original, and has only a few minor holes in it. The tolex is all original, too, and aside from the usual scuffs and wear it looks great. The handle is also original, and in fine shape. The blackface front plate is very clean and looks great.
The amp was originally purchased at the famous E.U.Wurlitzer store in Boston, Massachusetts, and still has a sticker on the amplifier chassis emblazoned with their name. There's an amusing, ancient Dymo label on the inside of the back plate with the name of the original owner's band "The Fibers."
