      We see this in the next movie in potions. Hermione is able to brew perfectly competent potions right out of the textbook, but can't think outside of that and even considers it cheating to do so. Harry is using the guide of someone that could brew on intuition and who loved experimenting. It's why his potions are actually much better than Hermione's when he uses the half-blood prince's notes. Sure, the prince wasn't a Ravenclaw, but I would argue that they could easily have been one under different circumstances.

    Kreacher was wearing rags because the same rules of freeing house elves by giving them clothes still applies. The reason they don't free him, which is explained better in the books, is that he has knowledge of the Order, and if given the chance would betray them, since he was brought up in the Black household, who held very pure blood beliefs, and thus it rubbed off on him. So he hates the fact that his family's house is being used to house muggle borns etc...
    Dobby was fairly unique in the fact he rebelled against the Malfoy's, most House Elves are completely subservient

      It's a strange quick of "house-elf culture" that the vast majority of them don't want to be free. Service is a point of pride to them. They consider it a shame to be "fired" from the family they serve by being given clothes. Dobby is an outlier among house elves, and in seen as rather eccentric. IIRC, there are only three house elves we ever really get to know: Dobby, Kreacher, and one other that's only in the books. That one is seen first in book 4: Goblet of Fire.

    • @johnalden5821
      @johnalden5821 2 года назад +9

      It would be interesting to see any kind of interview with Rowling to see why she decided to make the house-elf element so prominent in this world. It works in terms of having Harry liberate Dobby, but then we are left with a universe in which the protagonists basically maintain chattel slavery. It doesn't help that, as you noted, most of the house-elves are subservient. That just makes it more icky. Why is this in the books at all?

Many wizarding families in Britain were distantly related to the House of Black. Like the Malfoy and Lestrange families, the House of Black was synonymous with elevated status and wealth. All this works against Hagrid as in such a case he legitimately looks guilty with no counter evidence to protect him other than his own testimony.
      The main issue with Truth serum and memories as evidence is that they rely on the perception of truth, this is an issue in book 6, with the use of false memories in the past led to people being framed for crimes which they admitted to. The thing with Harry's trial in book 5 is its basically a lynch trial, it was called for one purpose and one purpose only, to find him guilty. Originally he wasn't going to trial, he was basically going to get a dressing down from the department head before Fudge stepped in, and they even changed the time of the trial hoping Harry and his supporters would miss it.

    This is one of those things where not having the time to explain things that the books do hurts the movie.
    The movies avoid Dobby as much as possible, likely as much to keep CGI costs down as to save time. In the books, Dobby works at the school, since he's no longer with the Malfoys. Harry tells him he needs a place for Dumbledore's Army to practice, without the teachers discovering them. Since the house elves know about the Room of Requirement/The Come and Go Room, but none of the teachers do, he shows it to Harry and tells him how to get in.
    In the movie, it's literally just Neville tripping over it, and then Hermione "Exposition" Granger telling everyone what it is, as though she or anyone else had ever heard of it before.
    George actually hit on something with his bathroom comment, though: In The Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore tells Igor that even he doesn't know all of Hogwarts' secrets, and that he once lost his way while looking for a bathroom, and just happened upon a room full of chamber pots. But, when he tried to find the room again, he couldn't.
    That's right; it was the Room of Requirement, which can change to meet the user's needs... and Albus needed a bathroom.
    Dobby also gave Harry the Gillyweed (and let him know Ron is what was placed at the bottom of the lake). Indeed, it would not be in Neville's character to steal from anyone, much less a teacher... even if it is Snape.

    House Elves and the question of their "slavery" is discussed much more in the books and there's no clear resolution.
    .
    (Book spoilers here)
    There is an elf in Goblet of Fire who is really committed to her master and is completely heartbroken after her Master frees her (for a mistake she did). Generally Dobby is shown as unique, he prides his freedom and wears clothes everywhere, and other elves see him as weird. Hermione sees it as a very clear slavery and tries to force freedom on the elves, who work in Hogwarts, which only leads to elves avoiding the Griffindor tower as they are afraid to come across clothes hidden everywhere i.e. they don't want to be free. Then there's Creacher, who is really loyal to his family and their believes (the pureblood madness), but despises his current master (Sirius) as he is not part of that belive system. Sirius also despises Creacher back (as he is the representation of the Black family) and treats him like garbage. It ultimately leads to Creacher betraying him: Harry tried flu network to check if Sirius is save before he went to the Department of Mysteries and Creacher lied to him and said that Sirius is not home, even though he was. This started all the events that ultimately lead to Sirius's death.
    House elves relations with wizards are a really interesting topic, it's sad that movies didn't have time to touch on that.

    3:00 - I don't remember if it was ever explained properly, but Dementors were on the island, where Azkaban stands before there was a prison and the Ministry of Magic decided to use them as guards because they were so terrifying. Also, they do not reproduce or die like other creatures, they kinda grow like fungi in places where there's a lot of fear and despair. So yeah, I would say they are inherently evil. Also, they have switched to Voldemort's side in the previous war, so it's extra ridiculous that the ministry is continuing to use them.
    21:00 - You have to ask really specifically to find the room of requirement. I think Filch knows about it, but to get specifically in the DA practice he has to ask something along the lines of "I need a room where DA practice takes place" and he doesn't know what exactly students do in the room. You can't ask to find someone else like "I need to see what Potter is doing in this room", you have to request a specific function.

Sirius couldn't just give Kreature clothes because if free to do so, the elf would have given the order away in a heartbeat. In fact, this kind of happens in the book. Something to keep in mind about the Dursleys... their self identity is deeply tied to the "normal" of a social structure in which they actively pursue (i.e. Vernon's business dinner that was actually a sales pitch). Harry is evidence of not only the strange, but an alternative social structure. The movies hint that Lily loved her sister but resented how her parents doted on Lily being "special"; a witch. So while they have agreed to house Harry... they try to deny Harry anything that allows him ties to a strange world that they find threatening to their social order and self identity. Maybe that denial gives them a sense of power and superiority of their world. In any case, their actions are cruelty personified.

    There are official test (on harry potter website) to see in which house you you would be sorted in and a test to see what patronus you have. I got Griffindor and a hound dog, would like to hear what you both get.

      I never took the patronus test, but I’ve taken the house sorting test like, 6 or 7 times & I always get different houses. The one I get the most is Ravenclaw, then Gryffindor, though I’ve never gotten Slytherin.

    About that infinite phoenix meat, phoenixes usually just burn into ashes when they die (in the depictions that im aware of). So, sadly, it wouldn't work George.
    Also, about why the ministry didn't use legilimency on Harry, i would imagine it probably breaks some sort of human rights of the magical world.

    • @jean-paulaudette9246
      @jean-paulaudette9246 2 года назад +2

    • @denizkenger52
      @denizkenger52 2 года назад

      legilimency, like veritaserum wont be enough. Legilimens helps to see into his mind so if Harry is purposely thinking of something, theyll just see what he's thinking. So he could think of Cedric getting killed by anyone and theyll see that. So even if he thinks of what happened, they would still not be sure because they have no guarantee of it.
      Same with them getting his memory to view on a pensieve, because they can say it was tampered with just like Slughorn's was. They can say Dumbledore helped him.

    "The gently smiling Dolores Umbridge, with her girlish voice, toadlike face, and clutching, stubby fingers, is the greatest make-believe villain to come along since Hannibal Lecter. One needn’t be a child to remember The Really Scary Teacher, the one who terrified us so badly that we dreaded the walk to school in the morning, and we turn the pages partly in fervent hopes that she will get her comeuppance… but also in growing fear of what she will get up to next. For surely a teacher capable of banning Harry Potter from playing Quidditch is capable of anything." Stephen King

    My thoughts when I read the book was not that someone in the government was trying to weaken the student so someone could take over but rather that the government does not want to accept the truth and are willing to risk the lives of the common folk to avoid the truth. Rather like if a politician were to say that covid wasn't real because they felt it was bad for their political ambitions.
    As for Kreature [the house elf of the Black family] I tend to think of him like a slave from the pre-Civil War period in the US - some of them bought into the whole beliefs of their masters and were very strong supporters for the Confederates - kind of like Stockholm Syndrome.
    "How much darker can it get?" - don't ask questions you don't want to know the answer to ..... but it is all worth it. Each step along the way is reasonable and then you look back and wonder how you came so far. Personally, I liken the story to being like just prior to WW2 on through to the end of the war - not to say it is the same, but that kind of build up from a period that seemed happy and all was good, WW1 was behind them all and nobody wanted to believe anything like that would ever happen again Hitler and the Nazis came to power.

    Awesome reaction as always! I wanted to suggest a movie to watch after you've wrapped up the Potter bonanza, although I understand it might be several weeks or so based on your publishing schedule so far.
    Ray Fiennes obviously does a remarkable job in this series but he does one of my favourite performances around the same time as the Potter films when he appears in In Bruges.
    It also stars Collin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson (Mad Eye Moody) and is a dark comedy(very dark) with some razor sharp wit and Ray delivers a line in that movie that is so rude and hilarious it pops in my head from time to time and it always makes me chuckle.
    I can't give it away, I only hope to see you two enjoy the movie as much as I do. Keep being amazing!
