Holy poo, I think got smarter from that... I always thought that it there were so many components and variables constantly changing the picture, and there are, but that sentence you kept saying, "If it looks right, it is right", that made it feel less intimidating. Plus the tips reminded me that there are many different processes of doing things, you just have to look at it from a different perspective. Seriously, you're awesome.
i love that line, 'if it looks right, it is right'. myself and I feel a lot of artists put so much pressure and so many rules on themselves. that's going to stick with me. great little tutorial.
very nice. it's all too often i see extremely talented artists whose overkill of textures really ruins the piece. thanks for showing us how to do it in a better way. :) also: your title is made of win hahaha.
this is a really great tutorial! I didnt know about layer masks. They really are quite handy! Thanks for showing them. I may be able to apply texture much more easily now : )
He's color picking. Im not sure if its the same on the Mac, but on PC, you press and hold the Alt key and you can pick whatever color you want from on the canvas. Hope I answered your question.
Heh, I knew when I saw the title that I would like the video. I wasn't so much douchey, more wimpy when it came to textures, and this really helped. Thanks. :)
yeah in cs3 when you use the brush tool, just click once where you want to start the line and hold either ctrl or shft (i forget which) then while holding one of those buttons down, click again where you want the line to end. Boom, straight line
alt + left click the color on the picture to use a droper to get the color uwant. when i paint i usualy mix my pallet on the side so i can use it like that
you can bring things back with the eraser. you have to have the preserve layer transparency feature turned on then you can paint back anything erased the exact way it was before.
probably i guess but I think that painting by hand is much better, cause you control the detail and light, not the computer, but that's a good idea to get fast and general scratches
Hey Pete! I finally looked this up after you mentioned it the other day. Really great tut! I recently discovered the use of masks for my graphic design job, but never realized the applications for illustration till now. Very useful info! Thanks for posting:) BTW How do you record yourself doing Photoshop? I would like to know so I can make my own tuts at some point. Gah sorry if you get this comment multiple times! I could not get it to post on Chrome.
hey I just got a wacom tablet and im just starting to fool around with it a bit. Now I know I have different software and its just what came with it, but I was just wondering what program you use or would recommend and if you had a certain process with creating images. I can draw on paper just fine but not so much digitally any tips would be appreciated. Also nice video it did give some great tips.
Is here any psychologist? I actually have some kind of feeling, simillar to love, when watching other, better artist, making great tutorials for people like me
I'm using Photoshop 7 and I don't have "Create clipping mask" under the layers menu and when I use ctrl+G it does the group together. Would you happen to know if there is a way to do the clipping mask in PS7? Thanks! I am addicted to your tutorials.
Thank you for your tutorials, I have learned a lot. One thing I'm trying to figure out is how you switch so quickly between your brush colors. I'm sure it's really simple, I just haven't figured it out.
well actually now that i think about it, textures have been painted and drawn in like this for centuries.... well not in this way but like in putting the work over a texture and so on and so on.. you guys know this lol
Is this done with a tablet? You see, I don't have a tablet, and my pictures take a whole to finish coloring, and they're only Kishimoto styled pictures. I just can't get that level of detail because it would take me a week to finish just one picture without breaks.
okay so now we've got Applying Texture Without Looking Like a Douche covered, we're going to have to work on not Sounding like a douche when making tutorials about Applying Texture Without Looking Like a Douche.
Hi! Sorry I got a question, how to make the texture change to Grey scale. As I did follow you click on "control+shift" but it doesn't work. I'm using CS3. Could you help me? Many thanks
Whoah! That interface takes me way back!
Very entertaining as well as a good tutorial. And that's almost just important when it comes to these kinds of videos.
THANK YOU for a clear demonstrative tutorial and for not rushing! I have wondered for YEARS how to apply textures correctly

Nice job man! An informative tutorial that isn't completely boring and dull, not an easy task, but you did a great job :)
that was good stuff- I need to use the layer mask more to get that gradiated effect of texture that falls off.
that is an insane composition. very expressive. great tutorial also.
you can also apply textures as patterns and use warp to chance the shape. that way you don't have to blend
haha your intuition with light and shadow is damn good. I hope I can get there eventually.
I'm REALLY new to photoshop so this tutorial has been super informative. Thanks for the great info.
this is a really great tutorial! I didnt know about layer masks. They really are quite handy! Thanks for showing them. I may be able to apply texture much more easily now : )
