Before i watch i wanna say something. With the heavy metal the camo hat and country accent I trust you with my life sir! If you wouldve started the video taking a big sip out of a busch i would’ve voted for you for president.
The problem is typically that the tanning solution is not permeating the hide entirely, because like you said, it's too thick. Of course, you risk thinning it too much and the hair slipping or putting holes in the hide as well. Second, the break is often not thorough enough. You need a really good abrasive implement like a post or a concrete corner to work that hide against as its drying and even after.
Yes I just did a video on soft tanning a coyote again. I am going to touch on a few things I thought about I left out in the last one's. And yes to thick it doesn't get through but I did mention in another video that sometimes you need to oil twice.
This video here is the best one I watched on getting your hides soft, no one tells you about that machine. I will be watching the rest of them to learn more.👍🏻
This video is great!! Just got a possum and will probably try to tan it like i usually do, but my first pelt was a ground squirrel, super hard. Second was a raccoon, still hard but not as crispy you could say, hoping thay with how much i took off the skin it tans smoother, didnt take so much off as to make the fur come out, but left a really thin layer
Did you make a tumbler yet? I've been tanning prob about as long as you. MY stuff is soft... but... I'm lazy.. well not really but I'm building a big tumbler to break hides. Looking for media next.. Should have it finished by next weekend
Yes I am in the middle of it now. Just got the motor and barrel. Got to start assembling. I get it , I am a little lazy too. Also I think the tumbler will really be a good soft tan. Will show a video when put together. Good deal on building your own.
@@carolinabushwacker well I'm having issues with the sprocket slipping on the hub. Not sure this is gonna work wit the drive on the side. Looking forward to seeing yours up and running
I have a deer hide I salted but never got a chance to finish the process. It's been sitting HARD since February. Suggestions on the next step/solutions to getting it soft again? Is it too late??? We have tags for this coming season and I can use the brain to do the new hide and hoping I can use the same brain brine solutions to finish the old one from February. If that's possible.
You would have to soak it in a salt bath to rehydrate it and go from there. But to get it soft you will have to shave it on a fleshing machine. I will be doing a deer cape video here in a few months when deer season opens. Wait and follow then. I will explain in detail
Yes and I do it in the otter soft tanning video. It works but leaves a little mess which is ok. But I have a fleshing machine and really don't do it much. If you don't have a machine it is fine to clean the meat off but it won't thin the skin.
Let's say that I came across a piece of tanned hide(whitetail) from someone who tanned it "hard." Are there any techniques that you would suggest for correcting the problem after the fact to soften up the end result?
It is hard to say. If it is thick skin {not been shaved and thinned} then that will make it to hard to redo. And if not oiled and stretched/braked the first time it will make it hard to redo. Deer season get you a fresh cape and go from there. Much easier to do a fresh cape then try to soften it. Just being straight with you.
Sooo I wanna make me some moccasin boots and I want the leather outside and the fur inside. Should I keep the skin thick if I wanna wear it like that???
That might be good for some indoor slippers with some kind of really soft fur like bunny fuzz or the neighbors cats, but if you are going to be doing much walking around, you won't like it.
@@carolinabushwacker Oh wow. That actually surprising, all I've ever heard is that the stuff is trash from the online community... It was the only stuff I could find in my area though, so I'm super glad so see someone has results (and it appears all the failures are more than likely due to leather thickness and improper break technique.)
@@bertabound8093 the thinner the softer and with oil and breaking. Going to do another video on the soft tanning a coyote here soon. Thanks for watching
i did a squirrel the other day and it turned out pretty good but i washed the fur with dawn soap and the hair started to pull off in some places. anyone know why? and it shrunk like half the size it was. if anyone has any tips let me know please and thanks!

I Just Buy My Pelts Already Tanned On Amazon & Etsy Sooo I Can Work On Them Easily🐾🐾🐾
Thanks 👍
how long do you leave the hide in the tanning solution?
A good 3 days stirring it about every 6 hours
When you’re scraping the flesh you should have it wrapped around a flat board shaped to fit the inside of the pelt.
You’ll have to carve it to fit and shape
Spends 66% of the video bragging 😂 love it

The thicker the harder to soften by hand. But you can try.
That might be good for some indoor slippers with some kind of really soft fur like bunny fuzz or the neighbors cats, but if you are going to be doing much walking around, you won't like it.
Make it from leather and add sheep skin on the inside
I’ll make a raccoon suit out of those pelts, and then I’ll have the perfect outfit for blending in... at midnight dumpster raids.
