Cool to see an eruption from the very start! Regarding the height of the lava fountain, a quick way to estimate the height is to try to follow an individual blob of lava from the time it reaches its peak elevation to the time it hits the ground. Based on high school physics, distance d = 1/2 x acceleration x time^2. Acceleration in this case is gravity, 9.81 m/s^2, or close enough to 10, which becomes 5 when divided by 2. So count the number of seconds it takes a lava blob to go from the peak to the ground, square that number, multiply by 5, and that gives you the height in meters. Eg 4 seconds fall time squared is 16, multiply by 5 is 80 meters high!

    • @robertj2444

Actually watching Iceland Explorer at the same time. This is way north of the previous eruptions. Since they have increased the size of the walls surrounding the Blue Lagoon there is hope that whatever flow there is will be diverted from the Blue Lagoon. Here's hoping there is no major damage this time. Peace Out.

Judging by the the drop time of the lava these lava fountains are about 125m high. That's at least 50 times the height of a person. Amazingly terrifying.
Using a marker, on your TV, monitors or phone screen, draw a line vertically from the base of the fountain to the top. Judge half way on it and mark it (½). On the lower half, judge half way again and mark it (¼). Do it again (⅛) and again (¹/¹⁶) and again (¹/³²) and again (¹/⁶⁴). Stop.
One sixty-fourth of 125m ≈ 2m, the height of a person. Gives a whole new insight as to how vast this eruptive event is compared to a person.

wow, we were just in Iceland a little over 2 weeks ago and thoroughly enjoyed the various topography. it's incredible how Icelanders live day to day with the knowledge that there can be a volcanic eruption any day. Your coverage is by far the best I've seen so far. No unnecessary sensationalistic bs; just factual information where possible and educated speculation without overhyping anything.
I do however have a bit of feedback. (I'm at 1:13:22, so you may have realised it later on already).
Some of the feeds were not live. I think it would be better if you were to get in the habit of clicking the "live" text in the bottom left of the video (next the the media buttons).
It would also be a lot easier on our eyes if you were to use dark mode on RUclips and your browser. Most of the video was very dark due to it being at night, which caused a big unpleasant contrast with the browser and RUclips UI.
I was watching this in the morning with my blinds still closed, so it was dark in my room and I am also hypersensitive to light. So it might not be an issue for most people. But it would be nice to have dark mode for accessibility reasons.
I'll still really enjoy your coverage whether you use this feedback or not. It's completely up to you ♥️

You have done a terrific job but I noticed that road appears to go uphill from where the first tongue will intersect the road to the second lava tongue intersecting the road. The second tongue may just run down the road and join the first tongue of lava that intersects the road then both will push toward the power plant

Sundhnúkar - Grindavik (Fagradalsfjall) (Cam 4) - Live from Iceland
There is black smoke coming off from one of the remaining vents. This is temporary. And goes back to white later. Any explanation for this? If this had been in area of dense vegetation I can understand when lava spreads to burn vegetation. But right at the vent in an area that had already recently been innundated, what would cause black smoke?
