I suspect the gaming press was happy covering these stories when the leaks were smaller and happened less frequently. Now it's becoming harder to deny these are malicious actors causing real harm. But this is probably if the gaming press really cared about the victims they would have never covered this stuff in the first place.
This week certainly exposed the Sony favouritism in the industry. If you don't cover leaks out of principle I can respect that but to previously cover leaks from other companies then refuse to cover a leak because it's Sony/Insomniac just shows you lack integrity despite you pretending otherwise.

The hypocrisy of these traditional outlets is yet another reason why I don't follow them and don't take critics' opinions into account. At this point the few medias I can say I really trust to be impartial are Spawn Wave and Digital Foundry.
It was pretty glaring just how much time that segment ate up, as while they started playing the wrap it up music like 30 seconds after the first winner got their award
I appreciate you being consistent in your own reporting, and for you and others pointing out the inconsistency in the industry. This is why, even if I was sick of Switch Pro rumors, I still come to your channel just about every morning. You do a good job spreading coverage about the whole industry. I'm sure you have your own biases like anyone else, and maybe some of your professionalism is because you don't have to worry about early review copies like other outlets, but overall your biases don't appear to get in the way of Spawn Wave as much as biases seem to interfere at other places.
Actually, it's been great for gaming. It's shown how truly fucked and unsustainable the current AAA model is. Whether companies take these lessons and do anything about it is another thing entirely though.
More like this shows western aaa gaming is just getting even worse, it's really time people should stop hyping up about these aaa western games and understand the vg companies more.
@@Mario123007 Western AAA gaming? Tf is up with that? You think inflating budgets of AAA games doesn't impact Japanese developers? Like with Spiderman 1 and 2, I would bet money that games like Resident Evil 4 Remake cost significantly more than Resident Evil 2 Remake due to how budgets are rising across the gaming industry.
@@derubor Exactly, the AAA model isn't sustainable, especially if it's a singleplayer-only game with no microtransactions. In order to be sustainable in today's day and age, big budget AAA games require a source of recurring revenue, and that means microtransactions. But even then, though, a successful live service game can easily fall off and struggle the moment the quality of content decreased, as we see with Destiny 2.
@@jimmythegamer2231No, what he is saying is that western aaa studios care less about the product they make, and more about profit. Just think about it, a new call of duty comes out every year and is considered to be a triple a game, while the remake of ff7 has been split into two games, with the other half coming out finally years after the first half. The issue with western developers is the push of a new game in the series per year, while eastern developers make sure the big games are good, most of the time
They would have been hypocrites either way BUT to GRANDSTAND after covering Xbox, Nintendo, Nvidia, Bethesda, Capcom, Suicide Squad, EVERY Ubisoft game, Rockstar, etc... To gleefully cover & profit from leaks for close to a decade & then talk about "ethics" while being featured in the video game you're White Knighting for... It's disingenuous & makes them look like complete scumbags imo.
I'm just shocked that they were able to access employee information. Sony should face some form of sanction for failing to protect that private information.
If you are incapable of covering a studios news or game in a negative way due to a conflict of interest, they you sure as hell can't cover them in a positive way either. Kinda Funny just laid out that they can no longer be trusted to give any honest opinions about Insomniac, their games, or maybe even Sony as a company.
Skillup’s, RGT’s, and your response are the best I’ve seen so far. Too many people have built these strong connections with Sony and dont want to cover the news. I guess Sony created a type of social shield whether intentionally or unintentionally, but they’re benefiting from the limited press
@@FabledFiend All the major early Nintendo game leaks get covered. In fact I remember some outlets even telling people where to illegally download Metroid Dread.
It's definitely not an accident. Sony has always cared a lot about it's critical and media reception. We know this from other leaks and former employees that have come out over time. No early reviews would even talk about the bugs in Spiderman 2, despite many being found day 1. A lot of outlets were also quick to insist the Bungie layoffs had NOTHING to do with Sony, even though Sony is having layoffs at many other studios right now (none of which are getting nearly as much coverage) and it was Sony who set expectations for them and they're supposed to be responsible for helping Bungie now. Even indie darlings don't get this level of preference. It's not all the media's fault though. The fandom has been pretty bad towards anyone who reports on a story that doesn't paint Sony well. Reporters like Jason Schrier are all of a sudden just trying to stir up trouble if they talk about Sony. He and others have made posts about how hard it is to speak up against "certain companies" after a Sony story gets backlash. People on ResetEra even tried to ban a journalists for reporting on rumors that Japan Studio was going to be shut down. In fact the whole InstallBase / ResetEra split happened because Playstation trolls kept harassing others in the sales threads, all because they were upset the PS5 wasn't outselling the Switch in Japan. And the ResetEra mods actually went to the Playstation Discord to ENCOURAGE others to perpetuate the harrassment.
Most games “journalists” have been on display for YEARS showing just how biased they are with their reporting. Whether being a mouthpiece for one company vs another, or chiming in on world/societal issues…these journalists have been showcasing their bias an hypocrisy for a LONG time. In other words, it’s the same ‘ol’ same ‘ol.
I think a problem for a lot of people were some news shows and journalists were saying "Hey were not gonna talk about the leaks" followed by grandstanding. Like your out here trying to pat yourself on the back for not doing something one time out of the hundreds of other times you did? Acting like your the bigger people out of all this and anyone else who reports on it is doing a disservice of some sort. They thought they were going to get claps and cheers but all it did in the end is now have a bunch of people questioning their character. Why was everyone else fine to report on but the line was drawn at Insomniac? A lot of people destroyed their own credibility over the past week.
Do whatever you want John. You are literally one of the most unbiased individuals in the RUclips gaming sphere. To you, information is information, and I along with many others respect you for that.
John definitely has biases. He views Microsoft in a more favorable light. But guess what? That is FINE! It doesn’t stop him from covering and being critical of Microsoft. He is good at pushing past his biases and sharing the relevant information. He never shies away from doing anything from reporting. I think his coverage on all the leaks recently have been the perfect example. He talks about the relevant information, but never shows gameplay (like Wolverine or GTA VI) because he could get C&D’d, but he also doesn’t feel morally right with doing it. Spawn is the best game coverage I see because, despite his biases, he is ALWAYS professional.
There's no such thing as unbiased in news. Even the BBC can't achieve it. You're biased in what you report or don't report. You're biased in what your ignorance is towards. Like when Spawn misinforms his audience that Rockstar and Take Two got that 18 year old hacker sentenced to an indefinite hospital order. They didn't. They reported the crime, the Old Bill made the arrest, the Crown Prosecution Service made the case, and the judge used sentencing guidelines from His Majesty's Government to lay down the sentence. But Spawn doesn't tell you that. He tells you Rockstar and Take Two did it.
How some outlets and sites refuse to report on the Insomniac leak really puts the notion, that there is no pro Sony bias in games journalism, into question.
A lot of game journalists showed their hypocritical side when they decided not to cover the insomniac leaks even tho they hypocritically covered leaks recently like rockstar and capcom that also were crimes and had employee info. You really can’t trust journalists when they don’t do their job by covering the info for their readers just because they’re friends with the studio. It makes you think that they go easy on reviewing games from that studio because they’re friends with them, so even tho the game might be an 8/10, they’ll bump it up to a 9/10 just because of their relationship with that studio.
What I think? Now I know why I rock with you and your content. When I first find out about your channel years back to now, I've always thought you were solid.
Made a video on it myself, but yeah, it really bothered me watching these places treat this differently than everything else. Very hypocritical and yes, it has to be because they got too close to this particular company. I know some developers and have gotten copies of games, but if leaks at their company, no matter how obtained, land online and there is gaming relevant information that pertains to Nintendo, absolutely I’ll be covering it. It’s relevant to many conversations gamers want to be having. Not just info on new games and roadmaps - the budget stuff too as we saw in this hack. It’s wild the stance being taken. As you said, if the outlets just outright admitted they were too close to the situation to want to cover it, the conversation would then shift form the morality and irony of it all, more to “okay, we understand. So instead, we need to talk about if you should be that close”. Like was said in this video, it feels like in a way most journalists and media covering games about these massive companies should maybe have a more hands off approach. Like, more cynical even. Because if you aren’t doing that, you likely are encouraging some pretty bad practices.
Suspicious emails have gotten a lot better now days, I work in IT and some look real, you'd only know if you haven't done business with them before. People think Phishing is some no brainer thing to avoid still, but it really isn't.
All it takes is a nontechnical person to do that. Companies give employees yearly training on this, but I've seen even highly technical people not realize their laptop had been compromised and every time they connected to their company vpn, they were allowing hackers to gather and plan an attack. These companies are just going to lock things down and basically tell fans as little as possible.
Ok so I didn’t follow the details, but, phishing attacks can be super sophisticated and generally speaking one eventually gets through, especially when it’s actually normal for companies to work with partners for HR or payroll who send out emails on a regular basis that look shocking like a phishing attempt, and which are connected to their corporate logins, which conditions many employees to ignore warning signs. The bigger issue is when a companies security strategy involves never having anyone do something dumb, because eventually someone will. They need to have planned for that and an employee getting phished should be no big deal because there are other measures in place to prevent that one event turning into a massive leak.
Keep on journalising (not a word as far as my keyboard tells me) your literally my video version of a game informer that I get daily! Plus I can tell your a legit gamer by how many graphic tees I own that you also have lol keep it up man!
It's ironic that an unfinished Wolverine game was leaked, considering an unfinished Wolverine film was leaked years ago. I don't recall many similar incidents of this size for either film or gaming. There's something about that Wolverine.
I am glad with the leaks its shows sony lost its way with 100 dollar ganes, esg scores and hiring sweet baby inc for scrips. That makes my decisions to avoid these games that much easier
So if news sites are conflicted on covering news because there is a conflict of interest…. that’s okay???? I think it just shows that there is bias and favoritism at play. I don’t like it and I at the very least agree that they should be honest on why they won’t do certain things.
The Nintendo Giga Leak is different. That's actually been so helpful in terms of preservation. Something Nintendo doesn't necessarily seem to care about, beside for its main titles.
Honestly you cant feel sorry for any company or government that gets hacked. Most dont invest in proper internet security, but will give millions to bonuses to CEO, or managment.
more precisely it's the board we shouldn't feel sorry for. but the company as a whole, comprising of thousands of individuals, some sympathy may be a good thing
And he's saying it as if it's a new thing. Back when I was reading game magazines, I could tell which ones were leaning toward more positive coverage to keep their access.
I really appreciate the honest questioning (about the difficult ethics of personal relationships and biases in games journalism) here and would love to hear more of your thoughts -- on the pod, maybe?
This year video game companies showed there real colors and have been in the most difficult times with the Microsoft and activision case, hacks, mass layoffs
I’m glad Spawn Wave doesn’t cover “Controversies” like charity fraud. That has also made it feel bad in the gaming space as well. That is going to be a crazy story and probably legal trial.
The leaks exposed all the bias and favoritism that has been plaguing the industry for a long time. Being a journalist means you should be willing to cover all kinds of news regardless of your relationship status. If a conflict of interest is enough for you to decide “I don’t want to cover it because [reasons]”, then you should not be talking about similar topics! You not only lose integrity, but you WILL lose respect. Losing both as a journalist is a death sentence!
Just confirms to me to never take sponsorships or similar of any kind ever regardless of anything period in my whole freaking life even if it costs me my life. Rather die pure than live tainted with having to answer those kinds of questions because I went to buddy-buddy with the people who I should of kept at 4x arms length away.
People are on the nose about Sony favoritism… it’s a pattern you can see in gaming outlets recently. I just don’t get why. Like of all gaming companies to lick the boots of, Sony? Really?
There are sort of two lines of thought when it comes to journalistic authority. On one hand, I had some some journalism professors tell me just to try my best to be objective even though it's impossible to be truly objective, but I think a growing contingency of media audiences prefer transparency over fake objectivity. If someone is upfront about their biases, we can work with that but if you pretend you're unbiased it feels shady
I wonder how interesting the leaks even would be if the games industry was less secretive to the public about budgets, roadmaps, and sales number like other entertainment industries
You know, the only thing is if they were "paid", the chances of them getting caught would absolutely skyrocket. Most currency exchanges, even with physical currency is fairly traceable. Nowadays laundering money or even being able to move the money at all without it being watched is very very very difficult to do. I really think if anyone had put up that money with the fbis involvement and assistance they likely would've gotten caught.
I knew you had to be working with MS the way you subliminally promote for them. On top of that, your subtle jabs at each corporations blunders, you haven't even began to jab at Xbox's lack of quality the past decade.
The worst part about is that some media outlets taking this stance leads credence to people thinking there is bias. Even Xbox tax now seems credible if it comes from these certain outlets taking these stances, especially when they leave reviews and vote at award shows, etc.
There is a bias, people have a bias, the problem is that quite a few gaming journalists allow that bias to reflect in their reporting. If you can't report on negative news due to a bias, then you can't be trusted for any news on the topic.
The industry favors and has been favoring Sony/Playstation for awhile now. Journalists/publications are suppose to be non biased (unless otherwise stated). But I think that’s just every type of industry journalist/publications nowadays
When it comes to morality in the gaming industry, stolen information from gaming companies is on the bottom of moral questions. These companies use immoral practices to make these games. Hard to see them being a victim of stolen info when the big three use China and their labor practices to make these systems. They have no problem using third world labor practices for the games or working the devs like they are robots with no lives. Morality is not a priority in the gaming industry, not even something considered until some leaks happen to the devs.
Well said. And, like always, there are enough 🤡 clapping along to the rhythm. It's not like there are more important or serious things to focus on right now. But maybe that is why this is happening. People's minds go bye bye for a moment 'cause the can't handle all the real sh!t anymore.
The difference? Maybe the fact that there's a playable build of their upcoming game out there? Maybe it's because of how developers were treated at the Video Game Awards? Maybe because more and more of these ransomware attacks have been happening and it's also giving these groups doing this attention/fame? Who can say.
The main gaming media are run by larger companies, therefore the journalists are not independent. The companies need to make money and therefore will have partnerships with gaming companies. It is media as a whole that is currently biased and I believe we only get independent thoughts from channels like yours now. I appreciate your reporting of the news each day.
my current position on this is that I will judge the various outlets who are avoiding the story based upon how they handle other hacking incidents going forward. they are all entitled to change their policies on coverage, regardless of the reasoning, so if they can stick by this line, the next time, a company is hacked, then I will look upon the more generously.
Video was well thought out and made a lot of good points. The only thing I would say is that it wasn’t “a bad week for the gaming industry” it was a bad week for PlayStation. The industry is more than them.
Good for you, man. You've got more reason than most to push back on this grieving funeral lens that's been applied to the Insomniac leaks. Consistency is a really tactful choice of words.
Journalists have prefixes of Investigating for those breaking news and Reporting for those reacting to the news. Most of youtube commentors usually report about it.
I think most of the issues I saw were around people reporting on this illegal hack as a leak. There is a huge difference between a hack and a leak. When someone breaks into your infrastructure and steals employees data along with your work. That is illegal and should be reported on as such not as we have another leak.
The industry as it stands looks for profit margins that align to the publisher demands. We used to be about quality margins as a whole until "too big to fail" companies started signing money making deals that align with shareholder demands.
I'm OK with gaming leaks about things other than the employees personal data. I have never really seen a leak destroy a large company or even slow it down.
I think if they cared they should have never covered this stuff in the first place. But what i think is really going on is it's getting harder to pretend these leaks are benign. They're getting more malicious and widespread. They're happening more regularly. And part of that is because these outlets kept covering them. It's getting harder to pretend these outlets are not complicit in this. And I'm sure they're getting more pushback from their fans. So instead of saying they made a mistake in the past, they're just pretending this is what they've always believed.
If it’s about video games in regards to new ip or a new game dlc or something that got cancelled all is fair imo that’s what the old magazines did back in the day it’s part of the rumors and speculation bit . If it’s some random stuff like peoples private info I think that’s when people should draw the line
Imagine Xbox and Sony telling us "With Playstation plus or Xbox live, you're "paying" for better "security" from the company, therefore we'll raise our prices".
One solution is for the industry to stop being so secretive and manipulative, and have full transparency. Honestly I would be more interested in this approach than the current world of NDAs, massive leaks, secrecy, and the pre-launch hype train. Don’t give the malicious opportunists anything interesting to hack. I’m sick of people thinking they can control the flow of information.

The biggest issue with ransomware isn't the cost of the ransom, but rather the opportunity cost when a business's files and systems get locked up. Many businesses will pony up the ransom because it costs less than the money they'd lose from not being operational for x amount of time
I can't actually care what journalists do, I just interpret news for the facts and nothing else. Their opinions and bias mean little and if that's all they have to offer, then I stop listening.
Why does these computers need to be connected to the internet? A in-house network sure but why the internet? Especially the computers houseing the employees information

Games have been super disappointing the past couple of years. Games we've been waiting forever for just haven't been hitting. The industry as a whole is mostly bankrupt on ideas. I don't think leaks matter all that much honestly.
Yeah, Insomniac is going to make more Marvel games. Hooray. Good for them. Meanwhile, gamers want them to go back to making original IP. If there's anything we get out of these leaks, like the Microsoft leak as well as this one, it's the opportunity to not be disappointed in the coming years, because we know the long-term plan and how much it's probably going to suck.
They're not bankrupt on ideas. Orders from above demand profit at the cost of passion. There are plenty of amazing ideas that aren't another generic open world rpg with loot and a gearing system or another live service "game." The higher ups shoot all of them down because they're afraid to take risks (especially with these ridiculous budgets) and they realized they can make easy money with staying safe. The industry isn't creatively bankrupt, but those who run the industry are and have taken total control.

Maybe mind your own and simply watch a different channel if it bothers you that much?
Actually, it's been great for gaming. It's shown how truly fucked and unsustainable the current AAA model is.
Whether companies take these lessons and do anything about it is another thing entirely though.
More like this shows western aaa gaming is just getting even worse, it's really time people should stop hyping up about these aaa western games and understand the vg companies more.
The AAA model isn't sustainable. There was a time when you got maybe 3 or 4 AAA per year, nowadays it's like every month there's a new AAA game.
@@Mario123007 Western AAA gaming? Tf is up with that? You think inflating budgets of AAA games doesn't impact Japanese developers? @@derubor Exactly, the AAA model isn't sustainable, especially if it's a singleplayer-only game with no microtransactions. In order to be sustainable in today's day and age, big budget AAA games require a source of recurring revenue, and that means microtransactions. But even then, though, a successful live service game can easily fall off and struggle the moment the quality of content decreased, as we see with Destiny 2.

Just think about it, a new call of duty comes out every year and is considered to be a triple a game, while the remake of ff7 has been split into two games, with the other half coming out finally years after the first half. The issue with western developers is the push of a new game in the series per year, while eastern developers make sure the big games are good, most of the time

@@FabledFiend You sound like a PS fanboy.....
There's no such thing as an unbiased person, you just think there is based on if you agree with them or not.
@@NuiYabuko you're right
That thumbnail lol looking like a teacher waiting for the class to be quiet
No stop spamming nonsense it’s the hack of peoples information that leakers released that was dangerous for them!

The word for me is "hypocrisy"
This is more than just about a relationship with Insomniac, their relationship with Sony as an entity is in question too.
@@fordgtguy I questioned that in my video but, probably correct.
More “games journalists” need to study Gamers Nexus.
The crazy part about this hack is how a insomniac employee didn’t know not to open suspicious emails
I've always hated hackers and leakers, but its interesting to me that people are getting so uptight about it now that it's a Sony studio.
Media and devs suddenly drawing the line at covering hacks when it comes to Insomniac, sure shows the weird double standard the industry has.
No sure where you aren't looking, but I see every news outlet talking about it, just because they aren't delving into everything .

You mean it wasn't a good week for Sony!
Losing both as a journalist is a death sentence!

what makes someone a journalist, is a journalist will vett info and dig deeper to verify it with multiple sources...
I mean we always knew that the "journalists" had certain "affinities" nothing new, although it was refreshing to see them outing themselves.

James McCaffrey (the voice of Max Payne) passed away.
my current position on this is that I will judge the various outlets who are avoiding the story based upon how they handle other hacking incidents going forward. they are all entitled to change their policies on coverage, regardless of the reasoning, so if they can stick by this line, the next time, a company is hacked, then I will look upon the more generously.

I think most of the issues I saw were around people reporting on this illegal hack as a leak. There is a huge difference between a hack and a leak. When someone breaks into your infrastructure and steals employees data along with your work. That is illegal and should be reported on as such not as we have another leak.
Thank you for covering this
The industry as it stands looks for profit margins that align to the publisher demands. We used to be about quality margins as a whole until "too big to fail" companies started signing money making deals that align with shareholder demands.
This is the reason I listen to Sacred Symbols and LSM. They don't take any gaming advertising money so there is no conflict of interest
It was a fine week for the industry. It was a shit week for sony, mostly self inflicted.
It is going to be interesting to see these people forget their strong "moral" stance when the next company gets their data leaked.
Speak for yourself, Nintendo is the only one that hasn’t disappointed when it comes to games. Outside of Nintendo, the games industry is destroying itself and is a joke.
