Great presentation. With the conversation about Jefferson and....all men are created equal...I’m thinking that may have been an opportunity to point out the irony of his slave ownership. I have to believe at least every one of those Black kids were thinking that. Thanks for your videos!

I bet to differ here!!!Jonathan Edwards was a philosopher first, a theologian then a preacher....He used arguments to persuade...emotionalism started in the second awakening with Charles Finney

@TomRichey Could you describe what J Edwards meant by repentance? Is it paying money, acting better like going to church, or just being afraid.

Evangelical church simply means to 'evangelize', which means to preach the gospel and has little or nothing to do with emotionalism. If you're an evangelist, you preach the gospel. Missionaries are evangelist that simply travel to other countries. Again, not necessarily anything to do with emotionalism.

You are correct in terms of the direct definition of the word, but quite wrong in terms of the self-definition of the movement. To learn more, read Mark Noll, a historian & professor at Wheaton College (the preeminent evangelical liberal-arts institution) who published “The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind” In 1994. Among other things, Billy Graham attempted to shift Evangelism back to respecting rather than denigrating intellectual pursuits, as a way of exploring God’s creation. Ever since Aquinas, great thinkers have endeavored to allow a comity between the mind and the heart, prayer and science. The “Awakeners” believed the end times were imminent; therefore turning their backs to learning in order to prioritize salvation. In the 290 years since 1731, those end times have failed to appear, despite the absolute certainty of many Evangelical clerics of many, many specific dates. Many of the Capitol insurrectionists identify as Evangelicals, which supports Noll’s contention that Evangelism without an intellectual component creates followers who are very susceptible to conspiracy theories and manipulation. Thoughts? 💭

Sir... are you aware that you have an IDOL in your classroom?? Evidently you are not an evangelical Christian. I bet you wouldn't get away with a statue of Jesus in your classroom... which a statue of any religious diety is an idol... but just saying....

Ok, I love Tom, but I have to disagree with the assessment of baptist preaching being all about emotionalism. Maybe in the south, baptist preaching is different, but here in the north, Baptist are known for sound, biblical doctrine to back up what they preach; at least in the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist church. The doctrine of hell is preached by Jesus himself more than heaven is throughout the gospels , so it's biblical fact to preach on hell. Good biblical preaching should effect BOTH people's emotions as well as their intellect.

I just learned about first great awakening. I find it odd. This seems kind of meh. Methodists came out of that. As Christians go, they are okay. They are not very good, and not very bad. They don't stand out that much. Now I see that it may just be a personal thing. I prefer intellectual discussions and theology. Emotional appeal doesn't work as well on me. So I don't find the emotional nature of the First Revival that compelling. John Calvin is a very intellectual Christian leader. I think he was a bit too intellectual. He got too much into the omniscience of God. So there is an assumption of predestination and the elect. This viewpoint seems excessively harsh and so doesn't fit with the omnibenevelence of God. There isn't any care about how sad one would feel if they were not in the elect. The Puritans got heavy influence from John Calvin. They were highly critical of behavoir to prove they were predestined. I think the Awakening would be more understandable in this context. People were probably tired of the harshness of Puritan thought. So the emotional appeal of the Methodist would be more refreshing. So people come into the churches in droves because they are so hungry for empathy. So impassioned sermons are appealing to them. Maybe there was an entertainment appeal too. This was way before movies, video games and the internet. So maybe exciting sermons were fun for people. This video does mention Evengelical. I wonder if modern Evengelicals come from this movement in some way. I do not like these guys. Emotion would describe them very well. They have a fervor in spreading the good news and converting others. I find that off-putting. There is also not being reasoning enough. Evengelicals reject science, and take Bible stories too literally. Puritians were way too focused on living a righteous life. They became hypercritical and tightly controlled lifestyles. Evengelicals have the opposite. Thier critical thinking is so low that they can do massive hypocrisy without even realizing that. This would be things like having mega churches and supporting the Republican Party. Jesus preached about charity quite a bit, so he wouldn't approve at all.

My favorite person of Christian History is Martain Luther. The main appeal is his rebellion against the tyranny of the Church and making Christianity enter. A second appeal is that he is in a happy medium between Catholic and Protestant. He does seem to be more on the Catholic side compared to other Protestnts. I like that as the Catholic side is better. Luther did have a split with the Catholics, but it isn't as severe as many make it out to be. I see that there is a third reason of appeal. There is an appeal of intellectual vs emotional. Luther is mainly on the intellectual side. I like that. He is very intelligent. He had a lot of study because he used to be a monk. He has ingenious ideas on the Christian religion.. He had enough critical thinking ability to call out the hypocrisy of the Catholic clergy especially the pope. Catholics and Evengelicals stand out as Christians with the most hypocrisy. Luther's main appeal is the intellectual part. People like his writings that critique the Catholics. Luther puts his ideas on the door. Someone like the post wel, enough to take to the printing press. The ideas spread like wildfire, and BOOM, reformation. Luther was intellectual, but he wasn't as harsh as Calvin. I see bits where Luther had a caring side. The cai g has emotional appeal. Luther cared enough about the people to stop the Catholics from economically exploiting them. He was also caring enough to allow people to have fancy imagery and music in church. Depriving people of that seems harsh and sterile. Lutherins generally offer salvation to all without a special elect. That comes off as more caring. One of Luther's biggest accomplishments is bringing the Bible to the common people. This is very intellectual in that the Bible is a book for study. Yet there is also caring as wel.. It would help people feel better if they can figure out stuff on thier own and not be bossed around by the clergy. Protestants talk about the priesthood of all believers. Yet the Bible thing shows that all believers can also be thier own monks.

You need to brush up on your Geography Mr Richey - I live in the unmentioned fourth country of the British Isles..The land of Revivals - WALES.
The history of Christianity here may be of great interest to you if you are lecturing on Christian awakenings. Otherwise, good lecture.

idk how schools in europe are, but in america it really depends on the teacher... some teachers are really fun and chill while others are just so.... dry and boring. some cant even teachlol

@@xckiana I am in a basic eastern european high school, all the teachers there are older women. And the lessons are so damn boring, the only fun lessons are when a substitute male teacher who is like 20 comes in and he makes it very fun. But that happens once per 2 years not even joking. So a sithole, backwards country

Yogurt Maestro oh wow, here its a mix of women and men, young & old. but hey, the whole world stereotypes americans to be stupid because of our education system😂 its kinda true... they don’t teach us everything that we should be taught (depending on the school lol)
and the U.S in general is pretty crappy too, im sure u know whats going on over here😭😭

@@xckiana its true, but at least American universities are known all over the world for being the best. the only problem with them though is....yeah student loans. Here in Lithuania if you do well in high school the government funds your studies in university. But yeah in high school the soviet era teachers just make you hate your life. So i guess there are both good and bad things everywhere

    • @xckiana

Yogurt Maestro yep the student loans are so scary, like im thinking of just going abroad for college so i wouldnt be in debt😭 well by the time i go to college, we hopefulyyy will have a new president (biden) who i think is promising free/cheaper college! if not... france here i come😂 luthuania is such a pretty place btw, and the style of buildings are so pretty!! (reminds me of italty!) theres probably so many sights to see there!?
