That's craaaaazy. Did you try contacting ebay? As long as you ship within your shipping and handling time, you shouldn't be allowed to get a negative rating because of something like that.
I had 2 beautiful dresses (1 silk) returned to me during prom/wedding season. I was so upset, I found this company that makes these large bands that you can attach to the item so that people can't just rent your items. I haven't had to use it yet, but I really hope this will stop people from trying to take advantage of me in the future.

I quit taking returns about a year ago for this reason. You are not wearing my item to your event and then returning. My return rate used to be around 4% and it is now at .5. It has NOT affected my sales at all. I still sell the same or more than I used to. Am I maybe missing out on some sales because I don’t take returns? Maybe but 100% worth it to me.
I’m glad you haven’t seen a large dip in your sales as a result! Thankfully, this really doesn’t happen to me often. But it really sucks even when it’s on occasion.
i got an EBAY return.(when i didnt do returns) the girl said the embroidery was messed up ,perfect when it left me .literally looked like she took a seam ripper to the center when I got it back.and if she would of just asked i would of taken the return

Had been thinking of possible reasons certain items you mentioned may have sold = bc 2 Red/White items are very "TomatoGirl" (TikTok hit summer 2023) & in addition to Athleisure being hot now = "Tenniscore" is trending = which aligned w 1-2 of your sales & re: COLORS: Rust & Mint Green (+ Cherry Red) = ALL Fashion Week trending Pantone Colors 2024 = Which is another killer resouce to consider w KEYWORD / TRENDS when sourcing, listing, pricing & watching how ppl buy (similar to why LILAC/Lavendar seems to be everywhere right now) FYI: "Peach Fuzz" is 2024 Pantone color & "Millenial Pink" from few years ago still back & hip (possibly due to Barbiecore, Girlcore, Coquette Aesthetic, etc) ...just sayin... Hilarious I was thinking all that as you went over ea piece ~ then you mentioned TPT ❤ But love terms "Ladencore" "Art to Wear" great to add to my mental list I can think of some exact items to promote as a result! woohoo! 😂🎉😂🎉😂❤
Mercari won’t allow a buyer to send an offer that’s over 25% off. Poshmark is 80% off and I don’t think eBay has a limit unless you set one on your listings. I wish Poshmark would raise theirs! I accept literally every offer I get on Mercari.
I’ve done a partial refund a few times and I’ve made a mistake a few times-most recently someone returned jeans that were nwt when I sent them and were returned without the tag and washed. I didn’t remember they were new so I went ahead and gave them the full refund. Ugh, frustrating.

I had the exact same question. I was in a similar situation but just ended up sending a full refund minus the shipping cost just to prevent getting negative feedback. :/
I had to pay for the 50% refund as well as the fees. The eBay rep I spoke with on the phone assured me they wouldn’t be able to leave me negative feedback, which is why I felt comfortable going down that route.
