25:13 A bit of context. Vasselheim is the oldest city in the world. It survived countless crisis including the Calamity mentioned by Ossysa. Gods fought Gods with most of humanity being wipes out. When the dust settled, civilisation restarted from the remaining pockets of humanity including Vasselheim. So the city developed the belief that as long as Vasselheim survives, humanity will perservere. Thats why they prefer to play defensive rather than expose themselves by deploying their men overseas.
Spoiler Very much like how it happened in campaign. Well, sort of. I do like how they're making Scanlan's growing dissatisfaction with the group and eventual leaving of the group a lot more obvious than in campaign. Season 1 episodes 5 and 7 having our bigger examples with Scanlan saying "not that anyone listens to me anyway" when they figure out that the book they stole from the Briarwoods was pretty damn important and no one paid him any real mind until after a bunch wraiths tried to mess them up. Episode 7? Scanlan really had to fight to persuade the group that his idea of causing a distraction to lead away the guards from Prof.Anders' house was a good route to take, but they just laughed and said he was hilarious and cute for coming up with a relatively sound plan to fix their problem.
@@SyntellWithout spoiling anything, this is what Sam Riegel (Scanlan) is best at: making a character who is the butt of every joke, and invites you to laugh at them. Then turns it around and makes you feel like shit for laughing. He did it campaign 1 AND 2, because he’s an evil genius.
I always appreciate the way you both kind of interview each other after the episode, it's a really good structure for thoughts and discussion beyond the typical post-episode reaction recap.
I love the Victor cameo. I think Liam would ask anytime they went to Vasselheim if Percy needed more gunpowder just to get Matt's delightful yet deranged shopkeeper. Hope we get lots more of him, even if it's unlikely.
On one of the Halloween episodes Matt cosplayed as, and introduced the episode as Victor, much to the delight of all the players! Yes, working with gunpowder is an *extremely* hazardous profession!
We've been really enjoying the journey so far. The writers have not disappointed. Well, at least they haven't disappointed from the standpoint of someone who doesn't know what the future holds.
Osysa really isn't evil. She's just holding onto very important knowledge, and she'll test them all before she takes the risk of sharing her knowledge. I feel so bad for how far she is from her mate. Hundreds upon hundreds of miles apart, and they can't be in contact. Also, I love that Pike is the one to say "fuck dignity!"
Good catch on the Scanlan dig. So many people kinda laugh and shrug that one off. Earthbreaker Groon is an absolute BEAST. The first time they fight him it's actually 3 on 1 (Grog, Scanlan, and Vax) against him and he whooops all of them. He's a level 19/20 monk, so it's not to surprising. These are the two instances of Viktor the Black Powder Merchant in the stream. The cast loved him so much that they gave Matt a standing ovation at the end of the first one. They literally couldn't stop laughing. ruclips.net/video/R8S3sjFpIIk/видео.html, ruclips.net/video/hJ2clyhEhHE/видео.html (there shouldn't be any spoilers except for the Ripley reveal which they handled here) Ripley was the torturer in case you forgot which horrible person she was lol.
when your show is produced by voice actors who have been in the business for decades they are going to give their cast all they need to give the best performance possible.
They also have a wonderful cast of guests that just get to... voice their roles, because they're also voice actors. The network of talent they've got at this point plus Amazon backing means they can get some amazing voices.
@@Syntell it does. For example Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is their voice director and voiced Zahra, the tiefling who is frenemies with Vex. She has been a Critter since at least the first time she guest stared on one of the episodes, where she created and played as Zahra. She is a talented VA and voice director.
so random fun fact, Zahra (the red tailed lady of slayers take) is voice acted by the creator of that character in the CR campaign, Mary Elizabeth Mcglyn (spelling?) she came in as a guest player and became a fan favorite. Mary is also the director, i think, of the voice recording crew.
Don’t forget Kashaw, the guy with gold armor and a headband, is voiced by the guy who played him too!!! Will Friedle and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn would come in as Kash and Z together, because Will and Mary were in their own DND group together, so Kash and Z were tight.
@@Syntell Another upside about them walking into Amazon offices with a wheelbarrow full of cash is that since they basically already got the first season paid for, Amazon can greenlight them a year *ahead* of any other show out there.
For some context on the Divergence... The gods used to be present on Exandria. A long time ago they split into factions - good and evil, to simplify. And they kept getting into apocalyptic wars - with each other, with titans, even mortals took sides. The most recent war - the Calamity - lasted centuries, killed of 2/3 of the world population, and ended about 800 years before LoVM. At that end, most of the prime deities (good gods) agreed that Exandria would be better off if they didn't live there anymore. So they all sealed themselves away in their own dimensions - they sealed the bad gods away too - to prevent themselves from causing any more near-extinction events. This is called the Divergence. The Vestiges of Divergence are the powerful items leftover from before the gods left. I'm confused why the show described them as weapons created to 'strike down the gods' and 'too power for mere mortals to wield'. The vestiges are diverse. Some were made by the gods and given to their champions. Some were created by mortals. And only some were hidden away after the Divergence.
So, quite a few things definately stood out in the first 3 episodes. #1 that broom. You will see why Scanlan is the Master Of the LONG CON if they follow the story by the letter, and also if they have time to show it. Considering they introduced it and it wasn't just a quick nod I think its going to happen and it will be awesome. DEFYING GRAVITY!!!!
In the first episode, Grog busting his ax was due to an in game bad roll. I think there was another failed dice roll for Keyleth to see if she got the right tree and location. Those are the only two I can think of atm. There were probably several rolls for Grog when he was fighting the old man. They're still using original in game material and dice rolls as much as possible.
So glad to see you two back at reacting to this series! They took a few derivations from the original streamed campaign to keep the story fresh, but kept the overall heart of the story in tact. So, I guarantee it's going to be a ride for Critters and non-Critters alike. Keep up the amazing vids.
Victor, the black powder merchant, was the Easter egg that made me scream (in happiness). “Learn from my mistakes!” And yeah, Earthbreaker Groon is a badass. The biggest nod, I think, was the joke from last season that was also in this season: the lance of dragon slaying. Hinting at the DND setting/world Dragonlance.
The voice acting, the animation, the story telling. It’s all SO good! I was really excited to see you two react to the “no one cares about you” with Scanlan because I know how much you guys love him! Also Earthbreaker Groon too because he’s a badass. Can’t wait for you two to react to the next episode, it’ll definitely deliver on some more backstory moments.

in the world of D&D, there are 2 major types of dragons: Chromatic and Metalic. The Chromatic are named after their color: Blue, White, Red, Black, etc..... They are all evil. The Metalic are all named after their..... metal-ness: Gold, Bronze, Silver, etc. .... They are all good.
A lot of the not seeing them mess up so often and so badly in this season is that the characters are now of a much higher level thanks to all the XP they racked up doing the stuff they did in the first season, so they're better and more powerful at using their skills and powers. Grog still got his ass kicked by the old warrior dude, presumably because his dice rolls weren't that great and also because the old man was a total badass.
Zahra is a tiefling, she's part devil, hence the horns and tail. The Calamity: when the gods went to war a thousand years ago, Exandria suffered the consequences. The prime deities locked away the bretrayers, then sealed themselves off from the material plane as well; which is why it's a tad odd to see the Raven Queen wandering about like a reaper. Regardless, Vassalheim was the only city to survive the Calamity. Originally, VM had visited once before, delivering an unholy artifact to be locked up in a holy and joined the Slayer's Take while they were there, due to a... contractual hiccup. There must be a collection of Victor scenes, it's well worth looking up just for the sake of the players' reactions.
There are still things that are specifically from the DND campaign, but they arent as obvious as the doors. The botched tree teleport where they end up falling from really high was at a different point in the campaign that wont happen in the show for reasons, Grog getting mixed up between Gday and bidet was a running joke for a couple episodes, I guess the difference is that its not so much game mechanics like doors being difficult and more character/story moments.
So, you're looking for Critical Role characters to cosplay? Anyone tell you about Shakäste? He was a character that guest stared a couple times in Campaign 2, played by Khary Payton, who you also know as the voice actor of Sovereign Uriel. Had a very cool look, and a smooth as hell personality. It would be an easy search to find some clips of his game play and artwork of the character. You should also check out Fan art of Zahra, artists loved her look. She was a repeat guest player in Campaign 1, same actress here and there, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. She is also the Voice Director of the show. And just to cover all the bases, Kashaw is, and was, played by Will Friedle, probably best known as the older brother from 'Boy Meets World'.
One thing they didn't make clear was the reason Vasselheim said no. Vasselheim is the first city. It was founded by the gods themselves for their followers as they tamed the world from primordial chaos. When the Calamity the Sphinx mentioned occurred, Vasselheim was the one city that survived and restored civilization. Vasselheim has to survive.
The one real big dnd part of the game are the dragons. Chromatic dragons in dnd tends to be evil and each color has a different element. Red is fire, Green is poison, black is acid, white is ice, and blue (from season 1) is lightning. That is really the biggest element here. That and the way magic of teleportation usually works requires familiarity and its kinda a loophole to have it described and stuff.
The creators literally describe themselves as a group of nerdy ass voice actors who get together once a week to play D&D. So I assume they know everyone in the voice acting community.
@@Syntell And some actors voice multiple characters, too, not just the core Critical Role group: The voice actor who plays Osysa, for example, also plays Raishan. And Liam and Matt, of course, are doing great turns voicing dragons!
Something I wonder is what are people using black powder for? Percy's firearms are new to the world, so I guess the powder has been used for bombs / fireworks, maybe magic component? Who is buying black powder other than Percy and Ripley?
Laura Bailey must have rolled really low when Vex was trying to charm Kash. LOL. I haven’t seen that arc of the campaign, but I can’t imagine Matthew Mercer not making her roll for persuasion or charisma.

Things have been changed for the adaptation, but even if this scene had played out, Vex wouldn't have had to roll, Kash is just Kash
Hey Syntell - love your reactions and good job picking up the reference to Dr Ripley (from Season 1). If Mikel-Claire is interested in the D&D gameplay elements influencing the show's events, she'll love this video: ruclips.net/video/tniauGWw-Jw/видео.html When Grog failed to hit the green dragon (Raishan), the players' reactions were gold; the game had changed and the stakes were higher. Rolling a 19 to hit would usually be a success... but not against an ancient dragon.
The sovereign was cool and all but the Earthbreaker Groon cosplay is right there... just saying 😏. You just have to learn where does your strength come from? Is it the "likes"? the "subscriptions" or something else standing next to you!? I ask you once more, Syntell, where does your wife- I mean strength come from!?

Thats when they knew they were in real trouble and they had to flee, just like the show
With that context, I really understand the scene now.
I adore that scene. Even more than Travis's reaction is Sam's. He goes from smiling to suddenly super serious.
