Silk dates way further than the Tang dynasty. In fact it actually dates back to the neolithic period around 5000 years? Evidence is found in archaeological findings. However most people only know about the silk road as it is one of China's most well know pieces of History. The Tang dynasty was the dynasty which improved on silk processing and made silk known to the world.

@@yingguojieke Silk had always been desirable back in the ancient Times and only people of status would have the privilege to wear silk. In the Neolithic period though, silk is found to be used for offerings to gods and religious rituals or funerals so silk would have something sacred. They also sometimes found coffins or the dead wrapped in Silk etc. in some graves of very important people.
It was not until the Ming dynasty common people were allowed to purchase and wear silk.

    • @XiaoXingSean
      @XiaoXingSean 2 года назад +13

@@yingguojieke Elle is correct, I did a bit research to be more specific. The earliest pieces of silk products discovered so far are around 5500-6000 years. In Chinese mythology, 黄帝(the Yellow Emperor)’s wife 嫘祖 invented technique of producing silk, so silk is there for entire Chinese history. At the very beginning, production was very limited, so used by royal family only, then rapid increasing in QIN & HAN dynasties, due to more stable societies. The Silk Road established in HAN dynasty, which is also a proof of production on silk. Supplying must be excessive before exporting was considered, due to transportation and danger of travel back to that period.

Correction to what Jack said about Shang Dynasty:
    1. Shang Dynasty was not a "full" matriarchal society, but a semi matriarchal society. Shang Dynasty was still ruled by male kings/rulers throughout it's entire history. And also family names according to the royal family tree of the Shang Dynasty (Confirmed by oracle bone scripts and ancient texts), families still used male lineage surnames passing down to the next generations. So it's safe to say that the dynasty was still dominated and ruled by men, however compared to later dynasties women had more opportunities in society in the Shang Dynasty. It's almost like modern day society where men still dominate the world, but however women still have their equal opportunities such as owning their own business/land, management, joining the government as a political leader and joining the military service etc.
    2. The currently found oracle bone scripts mostly mention women is mainly because Lady Fu Hao's tomb is pretty much the only royal family tomb that was left unlooted while pretty much all/most of the ancient Chinese kings/rulers tombs have already been looted long ago. And according to ancient texts/oracle bones script, Lady Fu Hao was a priestess at first in early life and became the second queen and also military general of Shang Dynasty later after marrying King Wu Ding of Shang Dynasty. Most of the oracle bones that were buried with and excavated from the tomb of Lady Fu Hao would obviously mostly mention the life and life events of Lady Fu Hao, but they do also mention King Wu Ding aka her husband and also important generals that served under her.
Extra information about oracle bones and Shang Dynasty just in case if people didn't know or weren't aware of:
Why we still have very limited information about the society and the rulers/men of the Shang Dynasty?
Well according to ancient Chinese medicine, Long Gu 龍骨 was used and prescribed as medicine by Chinese pharmacies throughout ancient times. But little did they know that the Long Gu 龍骨 they were consuming were actually oracle bones lmfao. It was first discovered in the Qing Dynasty late 1800's by Wang Yi Rong when he was suffering from malaria and was prescribed Long Gu 龍骨 , and that's where he noticed strange carvings and symbols on the bones like an ancient form Chinese writing. Yinxu / Ruins of Yin aka Lady Fu Hao's tomb is well known for its oracle bones and was said to be first discovered in Qing Dynasty late 1800's. Hence it's safe to say that a lot/most of the history and information that was recorded during the Shang Dynasty have already been consumed/destroyed lol. But I really hope that's not the entire case, I do hope China can continue digging up and unearthing new oracle bones and ancient archaeology of the Shang Dynasty and before.
One final thing I want to mention. During when Lady Fu Hao was alive, Shang Dynasty had a military capacity of tens and thousands of soldiers and around 600 of them enlisted at the time were women, most of them were said to be noble women too who had noble heritage. And also King Wu Ding's primary wife/queen Lady Fu Jing also took part in the military too and was also responsible for agricultural management of the dynasty/nation.

I would also like to say something about the origin of silk production. According to Legends silk was discovered by the wife of prehistoric Emperor Huang (黄帝). So we don‘t know the exact period of age. In 1972 an ancient tomb from the Han dynasty was discovered in Province Hunan(长沙马王堆). The mummy inside was wearing various silk clothes. Among other things, they found an silky single-layer thin coat that weighs only 49 g. Although this dress is 128 cm long and 190 cm wide, when folded it fits in a matchbox. Even with modern know-hows and technology, it has not been mastered to copy or reproduce a silk cloth as light as that today. Therefore, we believe that at that time (the body was buried around 168 BC that means 2100 years ago) , the Chinese had already a fairly complete understanding and practice of the manufacturing process of silk fabrics. In other words, the discovery and application of silk should have originated way more earlier. but since no earlier excavations have been discovered to date with well preserved silk fabric, we do not know the exact date of the discovery and application of silk. But that doesn't mean silk didn't exist more earlier than 2nd century BC. Since silk is an organic product, it is just very difficult to be well preserved in a grave after thousands of years.

But they are almost the being in the ancient legends, so nobody knows when did they live. All we know is that there where several great tribes and their leader called 三皇五帝 are the common ancestor of Chinese people.

Silk has a long history, way before Tang. However, i don't think there is accurate archaeological evidence of when Silk became popular. My guess is that for a long time since the discovery of silk, it was a material reserved for the most privileged. The Silk road was established in Han, but i don't know how much silk was really traded as well as whether it was exported before because Silk road was rather just a formal establishment of an already existed route to the west. By Han, it was most certain that the royals at least all wore silk. By Tang, mass production of silk was made possible, so not only privileged people, but normal rich people could afford it. But i have to mind u, they counted only a small portion of the population, most of the common people did not wear silk. Silk was always a statement of social status in most ancient Chinese history.

The assumption of Shang dynasty being matriarchal is not correct, as all of known rulers were male. Some factual element of the conjecture for existence of matriarchal society is based on evolution of the family names. In the beginning, a family name had two components are, the first one representing family symble for mother's lineage, followed by the other for father's lineage. It is also known that there are eight most ancient and prominent family names that might be carried by tope leaders, all include the symbol 女, meaning famale. Hence it suggests that a period of matriarchal society could exist, before Xia dynasty that preceded Shang Dynasty. There is a long transitional period until around Qin dynasty when the dual-symbol structure of family names merged into single-symbol surnames.

I think silk was discovered very long ago, I remember it stems from HuangDi's wife, which is like the first mythical person and where the name of Emperor essentially came from. I think it was always used as dresses, but all with highest power. And I think.. I think in the first place, they were using silk to write scriptures? But I am not too sure, only from my experience of watching dramas and stuff (which could very well be wrong). And also because of the capital of the dynasty at the time I think. Qin Dynasty and Han both are in the northern ish (and more western I think??) region. So they were cold. Therefore not that flowy. Weijin is more because they did drugs.... And then Song I think is because they moved the capital to south. And then upon Yuan dynasty (Mongolians) and later, the capital is back to the northern region. So that's at least one of the reasons you see the dresses change. I think at least...
