I think my biggest takeaway from this was the 'brush economy'. Especially when painting bushes or trees with lots of branches, I end up trying to put too many in and it just becomes a tangle mess. I will try harder in my future paintings to pick out 'key' branches and leaves! I think the way you did the cars was also a good demonstration of this. Even though they were just a couple of strokes, they still strongly read as cars.
I am slowly working on my PhD from Fornataro University. This was a BIG help!!! You are literally helping me realize my dream of being an artist- love you, Chris. Seriously, though.
I have just started painting in oils, after many years with acrylics, and have joined a plein air group. All great fun but your videos are immensely helpful with all of this. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for all the helpful information in this video. You put so many painting tips in 15 minutes that it needs to be seen more than once. I shared it with other painters.
The most important thing I learned is that these small landscapes look like a a whale of a lot of fun. I imagine this is a wonderful exercise to loosen up and see the large shapes. You provided a huge amount of information on value and color in these little jewels!!
Great vid! At the 2:00 mark, you say the same thing I just read in Greg Albert's book "The Simple Secret to Better Painting" -- which is, essentially, Never make any 2 intervals the same
I will be watching this video again and again as it is packed with information on color , value.composition etc and how painting these small studies will help with attempting larger versions....thanks Chris.
There is so so much useful stuff in this video - landscape painting is so hard to get right, especially working from photos. You explain & simplify everything - a million thanks!
I watch a lot of art videos but rarely leave a comment..bravo ! Gracias ! Your teaching style is above and beyond any I've seen. I do acrylic painting but I still learn a lot from you.
Thanks Coach! My plan is to ASAP store my stuff, and hit the road in my van, travel, and do some Plein Air stuff. Your vids have been both instructional, and inspirational. I wish I had some magical B/W value study glasses like you do. Squinting only goes so far.
You make it so simple to understand. Going from rough to detail is the key. And how much detail you want to put it's totally up to you. When i look at those paintings they are not so much detailed, but they are looking so good. Especially in the thumbnail it looks like a photo! Thanks for it, i learned so much.
Great tips coach! I was never inspired to paint landscape but you have changed that, your paintings are so beautiful and I am inspired to give it a try 💕🥰❤️♥️😻
Did your father or mother paint? what i was impressed with your teaching was the speed of your painting! that helps me to have patience to finish my painting! you know how fast you can paint that looks beautiful! amazing!
Wow. This is an amazing video jam packed with information for painting landscapes. I've taken copious notes amd look forward to watching more. Thank you
So helpful Chris! I work with watercolors but I’ve learned alot about composition and value from you! One of these days I’ll get the courage to try oils!
Could you make a video about how much medium to use each time you paint a new color or layer. I’ve been struggling with this every time I’ve been painting.
Hi Chris, again a very instructive video, thx. For value skills may i give two further hints? There is a notanizer app for phones, that converts your photos in 2,-3-, or 4-values black&white pictures. Good for checking and training values estinamtion. (Notan is japanese für b/w balance.) Another guy here, also a good coach (Malcom Dewey) recommends for training loose painting b/w thumbnails with a marker in a scetch book (fast and with "drive out of the wrist") and then as real painting start transposing this notan with dark blue on your canvas (very similar to your prcedure). This together with the notanizer is a nice training setting. (I hope is is ok to mention Dewey by name as you talk about other coaches like ian roberts and chelsea lang yourself.) Many thanks for all your good stuff. Jochen from Germany
Hi, thank you for the amazing detailed instructions! I was just wondering what type of paint you're using oil/acrylic/tempera? Also what kind of paper or canvas is best for this? Thank you!
Really great work & helpful tips. I struggle with doing water, in the sense that too much detail takes away from the aesthetic of a painting, but too little detail and it loses it's realism/affect. Are there any good tips you have to keep a good balance there; and also, do you think it's always necessary to add a background for a portrait? Cheers Chris:)
IMHO a background isn't truly necessary, provided you go for either a more unfinished or hyper-realistic look. The latter pops up so strong it doesn't need a background or minimal at best. By the way do you mean complete absence as in blank canvas behind the figure or at least an even color? If the first the edges of the head can be a bit too pronounced because it hasn't something to blend with it. Though an unusual color and the edge needs pronouncing. Paint Coach his Jack Nicholson is only one color, not a true background. In contrast The thumbnails of his "check my courses below" show the old man with patches of color giving outside feel to living it up quite a bit. Both work, just handled differently. On a final note I would say blank canvas as background works better with watercolor than other mediums such as oil, because the study more easily can have an "early stage" look that is in fact finished.
Hey Paint Coach! I wanted to ask, do you think that people can learn a few fundamentals of oil painting by practicing with procreate and using brushes that resemble paint brushes? Understandably, color mixing will have to be learned outside of procreate, but if I want to practice on procreate with an IPad I already own, could I learn something of oil paint without having to spend money right now?
Are you using a big canvas here? What size is it? Also i see a black board thing on your easel a lot. What is that Chris? Love your channel, complete newbie and im learning a lot from you
Where do you get reference photos? Do you mostly take them yourself or do you use some website, database....? DO you have any recommendations for such things? Other then that I really enjoy your vidos and I watch them as soon as they come out. You are really an inspiration to me and thank you for your good work!
Hi, I got into oil painting in the last week or so, and i already saw some great result, but one thing is really keeping me from exploring and practicing, and that is the fear that my colors are going to dry too fast (they always do) so i'd have to waste a lot of material; one other side effect of this same issue is that i have some problem with brushing a lot of colour, I can't carry much color into a single brush, so i have to go back to grabbing the color way too often.
If you are painting with oils everyday ....how do you keep your palette wet...????? I'm using open acrylic everyday as it's easy to keep them wet in stay wet palette.itrued the same with oils with adding poppy oil, stand oil etc even with water mixable oils but nothing stays wet....skin forms after 3days even in a closed box. Any suggestions to keep wet?
I have failed three times at a large painting, I paid about $80.00 bucks for the canvas, can I use paint remover on it to try again? And yes I need to go back to painting smaller. Thanks coach.
I'm pretty sure you can. My art teacher says you need to remove the layers of the paint with the palette knife and apply the acrylic primer on a canvas. Actually, I suggest using paper for oil painting, it's cheaper than canvas, so you don't have to spend a lot of money every time you're not satisfied with the result :)
If the paint is dry you can simply paint over the top of it. Some painters will even paints a solid mid tone to cover up any distracting details from the previous painting. If your paint was super thick you might want to sand down the canvas, however be very careful not to inhale any of the dust. Good luck!
Hi Chris I have a question , did you ever ordered supplies from Jerry’s Artarama? I wanted to order some painting supplies from there but I’m not really sure if it’s a good and legit shop, I tried to search about it but couldn’t find the answers I wanted. Do you know anything about it, if it’s a great website to order from or not ?
I have used Jerry’s for years. Great quality, value and customer service when necessary. I like the linen canvas pads Chris recommends for studies and Jerry’s exclusive DaVinci panels for my work. Lots of green, less toxic options. Hope this helps-
