    Props to the guy with the P1 for taking that car on the track. Most people that buy that car would drive it once a month down to the car & coffee meet up to pretty much say to everyone "look how much money i have". But no this guy is using the car for what it is built to do, thats really awesome. And wow the speed difference is really what sets supercars and hypercars apart.

  • @harshlens

    The P1 is definitely a faster car, but the guy in the corvette was a much better driver.

      harshlens You can't necessarily say that: the P1 is more of a handful to drive than the Z06 from everything I've read.

    • @BrianZandy
      @BrianZandy 9 лет назад +5

      tmat04 Naw if the P1 driver was as skilled as the Z06 driver, he wouldn't have been caught up to at every corner. He braked too early and didn't corner aggressively enough, unlike the Z06 driver.

    This is from the P1 owner and driver
    "1) The new z06 is damned impressive in capable hands (in this video I believe an experienced instructor was driving, and it shows!). At any point during the weekend I saw a c7 z06 being driven well I took note; it's a very quick car. Big respect. For the price, I think it's every bit as impressive as the TA Viper, which is a car I am a huge fan of.
    2) Why is it always your slowest lap that somebody captures on a dash cam? Seriously I will never understand...
    3) In the initial T12-15 section I will point out that there was a spun Carrera GT right next to the track. It seemed appropriate to slow down. Then traffic T15-19 - I am not trying to aggressively fill someone's mirrors with a P1 and increase the risk of something crazy happening in front of me. In fact I was very confused why the z06 was that darn close in that section when I was obviously slowing for the cgt and waiting on traffic, until I realized it was a solid driver (likely an instructor) driving. Then it made more sense. When I saw that car at other times it was still being driven quite well, but not quite this quick. In any case, big respect to driver and instructor and car.
    4) Obviously I blew the brake point into t1. Whoops. Gotta exceed the limit to find it.
    5) Regarding braking performance comments on the other thread, I would suggest that the 225 board into t12 is about the limit from 180+mph. I am leaving a bit on the table for obvious car preservation reasons (part of why I decided to give up the apex when I ran it too deep into t1 - not a race, why take any risk?). but in general the p1 brakes earlier because it's carrying that much more speed in. The p1 brakes are fantastic and exceed 1.7g sometimes into t1.
    6) I'm no pro, and it shows. This was my first full event at COTA. Fun but challenging track! Ultimately figured it out (with some help!) and got down to a 2:23 rolling laptime which I was reasonably happy with. Car probably has another 3-4 seconds in it in pro hands, which I will try to chip away at in subsequent outings to close the gap a bit further. New tires may also help, these were my same tires from Laguna - but they didn't really fall off dramatically until the last session of the last day. All this talk about the Trofeo R falling off dramatically after just a few laps is silly. "

      @justinholloway5210 3 года назад

      I could tell he just made a mistake in T1; we all do especially in a car reaching THAT amount of speed. It gets there before you know it. But the part that let me know he was experience was how he handled overshooting the brake point. He went straight until it finished braking and then turned even though he missed the apex.

      Anyone with a Vette will not see any of these P1 out on the road because look at the price of one. Since the P1 has been created I have yet to see one. Also, that little V8 has twin turbos so power adders contribute to the 300 more ponies the vette has. Useless video since there is an obvious disadvantage between both cars. Bring something with the same horse power and then we can compare the apples to apples.

    I personally prefer the manual as I like to be more involved with the car. The auto blip is a neat function. Manual isn't as fast, but with all the potential electronic aids, I would prefer to be more involved. Part of the driving fun. Will start working with the car with all aids off.

    • @matthews826

      everyone always argues that auto/dual-clutch is faster but really by how much? i got my m3 in dct not for lap times but so i can drive around town without putting my coffee down :) the manual is more fun, though!
      enjoy the car and thanks for the video .. great footage!

      @americanAlienBoy 9 лет назад +1

      Matthew S
      Realistically? Based on my experience, I'd say at least 0.5 seconds a lap, probably closer to a full second around our local track. That's a margin most racers would sell their grandmothers for. First, DSG can shift quicker and more consistently than almost anyone. Second, you can brake harder and trail off more smoothly when you're not dealing with a clutch. As an added bonus, when it's that easy to change gears, you shift more often to take advantage of the power band.

    • @evanescent0311
      @evanescent0311 9 лет назад

      +americanalienboy .. first of all, I'm not arguing, I agree with you but I think this is an interesting subject that many people don't grasp (NOT referring to you.
      .5-1.0 second around a 1:30-2:30 (for example only) for the average Joe isn't much at all (although a lot of these jokers would probably still sell family for the right to brag about it). the average Joe probably has much more than .5-1.0s variation lap to lap (myself included). in a 10, 15, 50 lap race those tenths sure do count and I agree. I just wonder why the RUclips racers or even HPDE guys care so much about that .5s/lap. a) most people won't feel the difference b) no money involved, c) the lap times are still probably pretty inconsistent for most of us, d) HPDEs are about maximizing your equipment, not maximizing the fastest car allowed for a given event.
      I do think you and i probably are on the same page though and this is me throwing stuff out there, not arguing.
      personally, I got the DCT so a) I can drive around town and still hold my coffee,etc, bc that's what I'm using it for most often; b) when I DO take it to the track I don't have to worry about a money shift; c) the higher tech transmission seemed to fit the car's purpose better.
      the faster lap times are a nice (sounding) bonus, but practically speaking it doesn't to Jack for me (track day Joe). seat time with an advanced instructor is where I'll see my biggest improvements :)

    • @americanAlienBoy
      @americanAlienBoy 9 лет назад +2

      evanescent03
      I think we're on the same page. I just was mentioning what I thought the difference would be in times.
      I've instructed in E92 M3s, both manual and DCT. I enjoyed the DCT cars more. As you said, it fits the character of the car, and trying to get in touch with my inner Alonso is always good for a giggle.
      Your point about money shifts is a good one - I actually lost an engine at COTA a couple of years ago, due to some ham-handedness at the end of the back straight.

    • @matthews826
      @matthews826 9 лет назад

      americanAlienBoy
      sorry about the money shift! i know a couple guys who have blown their e36 m3 motors .. and they are experienced so that was in my head when i was choosing the DCT on this car. i've only done about 16 HPDE days but they've been spread over 5 years, 3 cars, and 7 tracks, haha. a nice broad experience but i haven't gotten to really hone my skills or car(s). i still want to get a manual transmission car for the fun-factor but may stick (pun intended) to DCT/PDK for the track.
      with a couple little kiddos in diapers i'm having a hard time scheduling track days but i'm hoping to hit up COTA although it may not be until late '15 or early '16 before i can secure a day, and that's if i'm lucky, seems like spots are hard to come by.
      have fun out there and be safe! maybe i'll run into you sometime (not literally**)

      Charles Johnson the fact that he completely blew by 1st corner, missed apexes and didnt use the full track shows that the P1 driver doesn't know the track. thats the first step for improvement. then, consistency to build up speed till the cars limit.

    They may be supercars, but they also are in different leagues with each other at the price point, material and engineering. I thought the Z06 kept a pretty good pace for being a middle class speed demon. Price of the McLaren P1 GTR: $3.36 million. Price of the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 (even with the 3LZ pacage and fully upgraded): $117,025. I love McLaren and always have since the age of CanAm, but I'm more likely to see a Vette in my future than a P1.

  • @nomellocreampig
    @nomellocreampig 9 лет назад

    Always nice to see the car doing what it was made for over some person being too afraid of damaging it and leaving in their garage practically unused. I have always loved Z06 Corvettes (wells Corvettes in general) but seeing a McLaren F1 or P1 is one of those once in a life time things. It's like if I was on my bike and I seen a nice car even though I know it would smoke my bike I'd still try to get it to race just to see it in action.

    Is this Z06 equipped with Z07 package? According to the video, Z06 has some advantages at the first sector. If this Z06 is not equipped Z07 package, I think that the A8 Z07 with Z07 will be a litte faster than the stage1 or stage2 Z06 with M7. And, could you also give us some information about the heat soak problem? Did you feel that the power was reduced after you drove it for more than 20 minutes? Thank you.

  • @miked9618
    @miked9618 9 лет назад

    That was interesting. I suspected you would cut time off of your previous lap following, but 5 seconds is a hell of a lot. Good job!
    Are you going to budget for grippier tires? With the downforce your car has you might get less scrub if you could find more mechanical grip.

  • @JuliuszBaczynski
    @JuliuszBaczynski 9 лет назад +1

    And what have we learned? that mechanical grip outwins aerodynamical grip! The reason being that the corvette could almost keep up was the weight and mechanical grip at lower speed ;)

  • @denniskwok7613
    @denniskwok7613 9 лет назад +5

    The driver of the P1 would really benefit from some track day lessons. His minimum corner speed is really low and his braking is all over the shop. When not overshooting his braking point, he's still on the brakes way past the apex of the corner. It takes no skill to stamp on a throttle on a straight.
    The Z06 is being driven very well though.

  • @TheOneAndOnlyBemars
    @TheOneAndOnlyBemars 9 лет назад +62

    I'm no expert at all, but it seemed as if the driver of the P1 was either a bit too careful (wouldn't be so surprising though), not familiar with this track or with driving on a track in general. Before people will hammer me down for this: I'm pretty sure I'd drive 30 mph or something. I'm not claiming I can do any better, BUT I feels like if the Z06 driver was to drive a P1, he'd do way better. You can see in the first 1.5 mins how he closes in on the P1 in the corners, because the P1 drives wrong lines. Correct me if I'm wrong or share your thoughts with me. (could also be that the P1 was just not trying)

    • @jeffwill4923
      @jeffwill4923 9 лет назад

      You hit all the proper points. It's a little of everything in the video. If you have read around about P1 it's a beast of a car. The average Joe can't get no way near the limits. 1 issue not stated here. P1 like Z06 must have some alignment and tires pressures set for track usage. Driver maybe in a street setup.

    • @TheOneAndOnlyBemars
      @TheOneAndOnlyBemars 9 лет назад

      Jeffrey Williams
      Yes, agreed! I've read plenty of how the P1 demands some experience (and bravery haha) to be driven to its limitations. Though it doesn't seem to be drivent that way in this video! There is one guy who collects supercars and then rents them to people on track, who possesses the hypercar trio since a couple of weeks. Saw him driving around a track with a P1 on video, and he sure did try to drive on the edge haha!

    • @wookiestone9868

      Matthias Roobroeck Neither driver looked particularly fast although the Corvette driver did look better. That McLaren, in the hands of a reasonably good racing driver even amateur, would have gone away from the Corvette in the corners. I was on the track with an Enzo once in a spec racer ford. 4 of the SRF's lined up like chicks in a row behind the Enzo in corners because they guy just parked. Clearly that should have never happened. Same deal, not such a racy driver. With my experience being only in low power momentum cars I'm not sure I'd have pushed any limits in a McLaren I had to pay for either so I'm not criticizing anything but the idea that this has anything to do with the relative road merits of the respective cars.

    • @cyz44
      @cyz44 9 лет назад +1

      Matthias Roobroeck yes i totally agree, the Z06 driver was much better at hitting the apex points and following the correct driving line for the circuit. The P1 driver didnt seem to be an expert.. looked like he/she was just having a bit of fun..

    • @TheFarfalho
      @TheFarfalho 9 лет назад +3

      Agree with you. One point missing is how the P1 driver keeps on braking while turning into the corner. Brake first, turn second. That with the wrong lines sums up the situation.
      The Z06 driver is to be commended due to keeping the correct line.
      Both were yield because of the slower pace cars, that's a given. Although I believe with a another driver with a regular line and pace would leave the Z06 behind even in corners.

  • @sergioramirez6050
    @sergioramirez6050 9 лет назад +1

    Not taking anything away from the P1 because its a technological marvel. But the Corvette is over a million cheaper, weighs more, has over 250 horepower less and has a manual gearbox, and is able to close in on one of the fastest cars in the world today. Thats still impressive to do even if the McLaren has a driver that doesnt know how to drive on a track. Both cars are amazing but id still take the ZO6 just because i feel like i got more to do with the experience then the P1. But id still love to drive one just to see how fast the sucker is. Great video though.

    Thanks for posting this! The output from your PDR is impressive as is the P1 and your C7 Z06. AFAIK, participation at an event like this at COTA can cost quite a bit (car costs, participation costs, tires, logistics, etc), but it's not a race and includes driver briefings on allowable passing zones. Was the silver C6 you passed on the straights a ZR1? What kind of briefing did you go through?

      Adam S yeah the 918 is more of a extremley powerful electric hybrid than the p1. Your seeing more turbo power on the straight than actual electrictorque power when its going down the straight.

      Jeffrey Williams i dont know why an auto group in your country cant get together and build cars like the p1 unless you do you will be eating its dirt forever

    • @jeffwill4923
      @jeffwill4923 9 лет назад

      fred wilson I see you haven't heard of the SP-200 SIN. A small group in Las Vegas is attempting to do such. None of this weak stuff of 900,1000 or 1500hp,lol. This car is claimed at 2400hp. 1650hp from 9.0L TT V8 and 750hp from e-motor. Top speed is said of 280mph. Weight will be around 3800lbs. 60 miles of e- range not this 6,12 or 20 others are claiming.
      P1 and others will be eating Regera's dirt if Christian get all together properly.

    I think it really cool that Chevy built a dash cam into the Z06, its to bad McLaren didn't think to do the same.

    • @Edward135i
      @Edward135i 9 лет назад +1

      idk, seems like a pretty good idea to me, if you going to make the fastest track car in the world why not put a camera in it so you film your laps.

    • @shobin05
      @shobin05 9 лет назад +1

      William Seroyer Because its made to be as light and fast as possible, the engineers are not going to add any weight that is unnecessary, but i will agree the in built dashcam is something normal cars should come standard with nowadays.

    • @Edward135i
      @Edward135i 9 лет назад +1

      except for the 400lbs of batterys, and the fact that the car has A/C and leather. really the few grams that a dash cam will add is basically will make no difference, the car comes in at 3,280 lb thats a pretty heavy sports car in my book, and the P1 is not a very big car, the F1 was 2,509 to me the p1 might be a bit of step away from being an out and out striped out race car for the street compared to the F1.

    • @shobin05
      @shobin05 9 лет назад +2

      William Seroyer When it comes to supercars. few grams always MATTER.
      The mazda MX5 had a lighter rear view mirror which are just few grams lighter than the previous one and yet the engineers did absolutely everything to make it lighter, you think they would not do the same for a supercar?
      Batteries are there to ADD power. Leather? P1 does not have leather, what are you talking about? As for AC, you are going to buy a million pound supercar without AC?

    the fact that the guy who owns a 1 million dollar p1 races it on a track. and risk not only his 1 million invested but also his life too. a corvette cost how much 60k? to keep up or even in sight of something worth a cool mil more than just impresses me. i wish i could own a c7 zo6..........damn. thats all you can say about it. no other words can express how bad-ass this car is and is capable of.

  • @vipinnath6020
    @vipinnath6020 9 лет назад +1

    What you saw is British Engineering vs American Engineering.
    The Z06 caught P1 in corners becasue the P1 Driver was driving cautious in corners & also braking early in straights.

    • @weedmastersr
      @weedmastersr 9 лет назад

      Then clearly American engineering wins because it can achieve almost similar performance for less than 1/10 of the price, with 300 HP less and a manual transmission (which is for real drivers).

    • @vipinnath6020
      @vipinnath6020 9 лет назад

  • @przemekzientala
    @przemekzientala 9 лет назад

    It looks like the guy driving the Corvette is actually a much better driver than the one in P1. Notice how he still 'keeps up' with P1 after the straights - he is definitely faster when it comes to cornering. If it wasn't for the sheer power output of P1, then it would be the P1 driver who would probably 'get smoked'.

    I would be more interested to see these two cars run without traffic. The z06 makes up the most ground when they catch up to traffic. Also we have no way to know how much time both drivers have spent with their cars or how well they know Cota. I've only driven Cota on my Xbox and if you miss turn 3 your off line until turn 8. Plus lets just say that the drivers previous cars were the 12c and c6 z06. The jump in the mclarens is huge compared to the vettes and I would assume it would take longer to get used too. Let's not focus on the fact the vette was closing in on the p1 and more that we get to see both of these amazing cars on the track

    Experience or bravery had the Vette catching up on the corners. I realize the direct injection on the new Vette's has proven challenging for tuners, but early LS motors can cheaply make 12-1300 Hp. I'm curious how the Vette would do with twice the power and more down force. The P1 is drop dead gorgeous though.
