The show-stopping title song from the Jim Steinman/Michael Weller musical "More Than You Deserve" on closing night, January 13th 1974. Uploaded with permission.
Just when you thought, you'd heard the best of Meatloaf, you stumble upon this by accident and witness a true legend showing why he has been the best for nearly 40 years!!!!
Part I: Hi from the breezes of the Caribbean! Dreampollution, Congratulations and Thank you to post this historical audio! It´s my ringtone now! Really these Jim words are so descriptive and great admirations to his partner! Seem as if we were viewing Meat! It´s a sublime experiences loop! :)
Hi Dreampollution! Part II: Because I was there, on July 31, 2011, at New Jersey Festival of Balloning, Meat said: - This song is from Somebody, who his mother, before she died, God bless she, looking to my eyes said to me:- You know my son, better than I do! - I do mean with respect, I know your son better than you do!-. Is Jim Steinman, My brother, I love He very much... Two Out of Three Ain`t Bad!!!:)
What a voice, this man. His pre Bat1 years were the best! Slight comeback in the bat2 era, then worse and worse after that. But this, this is fab, love it.
There IS a video, I just watched it. It is AMAZING. Look it up on RUclips. I think the title is Meat Loaf- More than you Deserve (PCM Stereo). 8:14 min long. it's a MUST SEE
It wasn't drugs and alcohol that killed his voice. It was singing/shouting Jim Steinmans Bat Out Of Hell album that killed his voice! He obviously wasn't equipped for that as many vocalist aren't! If you stand on a stage singing Frank Sinatra songs you can last for years. As good as Meat was, and im a huge fan, he wasn't meant to hammer those songs on the Bat 1 tour and not damage his voice. 😐 Its a shame but its the truth 😐
Yep! Listening to Wario loaf's bootlegs of the live gigs he did on the original Bat tour, you could see how much singing those song's took a toll on him...especially the way he was singing them! He was really giving those song's quite a roar.
Great comment, I enjoyed reading it. You're so right, as a kid I used to wonder why Meat had a 'higher' sounding, lighter yet more powerful voice on Bat as compared to his vocals on the Deadringer album which (in my opinion) is not his best sung album. It's because those Bat songs weren't made to be performed night after night, week after week.. for me he became the master of his voice again during his less famous period.. Bad Attitude & Blind Before I Stop, after Bat1 these are his best vocals to me.
And both Meat and Jim knew that. They wanted him to have time to recover, but their tour manager had them booked solid because he thought that was the way to get the album off the ground. The only time they did get a breather was when Meat deliberately ran off the edge of the stage and broke his leg after a concert in Canada, because they were all so exhausted. There's a great interview on RUclips with Jim from 2003 where he talks about the tour and the pressures they were under...well worth a listen and it's almost four hours long!
Thank you so much for posting this. Is there more (of Meat's vocals and/or speaking parts) from this show? [Update: I just found the entire play. Thank you. I would not have found it if you had not posted this].
It was the grinding tour for BOH that damaged his voice and damn near killed him physically and mentally. They flogged him like a rented mule. Bastards.
He was treated terribly even after the 1st tour. Rundgren and Steinman put him in a corner until he was needed to sing. Marrying his love early 1979 rescued him when he lost his voice from all the stress. Took him 2 years to recover beautiful voice.

Exactly. Poor fella probably never got a day to rest.

That's awful, I really liked him.
