Folks who are criticizing tone quality, remember that we are listening to a recording from a device that is not optimized for low brass at that volume and distance. A better mic would make for a beer tone, I’m sure it’s an incredibly powerful sound in person.
Wrong. Loud and ugly is not the way the sousaphone, or ANY type of tuba should be played. Loud can be tasteful, believe it or not. Not that these talentless kids would know that.
That brotha is a BOSS on the Tuba! My range is good, but I could never crank like that! Shout out to him and SU. Been listening to this band via VCR recording, live TV, and RUclips for over 15 years! I can't wait to see them in Pasadena!!!!!
Remember the horns don’t need to truly be broken in. It’s the players that need to be broken in adjusting to the new horn. Larger bore size and greater resistance. JSU did it and so can SU.

Anyone that have been around for the last 40 years like I have could honestly tell you there are three distinct sounds in the HBCU band world over the years. The mellow R & B concert sound & arrangements of FAMU & the uptemp, mellophone, intense high note trumpet, precision marching and brass sound arrangements of the Human Jukebox. If you put on a blindfold you can tell which band is which. Many bands in the SWAC and around the country INCLUDING J-STATE are leaning towards sounding like SU over the past 30 years. Many MEAC bands are sticking to their traditional full sounding arrangements. This is why SU always states "Often Imitated and Never Duplicated" The Human Jukebox invented the term "Crank". Many Louisiana and New Orleans high schools adopted this style years ago, which is why many HBCUs love to recruit from NOLA. NOLA high school trumpets learn to play above the register at an early age, especially in the 70's & 80's. Check your history & old videos from 30 years ago JUKE HATERS... hopefully they now have quality brass tubas to match the brass sound.
He’s not wrong, the tubas sound like hot garbage cause all they’re doing is blasting, as does the rest of the “band” if you listen closely. I get that marching bands are made for the point of kind of hyping up the crowd, but they should still try to get a good quality sound, and not just straight up blasting. And those of you who don’t understand, are probably just gonna say that I’m wrong, and shit, but in reality you probably don’t know what your talking about and should get out of this conversation lmao
