I'm always amazed at their ability to play in sync. In all the sousas I see that play like this, there's almost no discernable beat or tempo to follow consistently, it really is incredible
yogi bear If that were the case, we musicians often times wouldn't get as much playtime unless the tuba or sousaphone was an instrument you could play well. This coming from a veteran trombone player.
All 15 of the Sousa’s showed up to a basketball game that nobody wanted to go to so the band consisted of 15 tubas, 1baritone, 2 trombones, 2 trumpets and a 3rd base being a tuba player it was fun not having woodwinds also I let my drum major who plays the horn play my tuba during a song I will not ever do that again
As an 1st trombone player in my younger days, I respect the hell out of my sousaphone, tuba, and euphonium brothers and sisters. We've been starting to need more and more of the big guns to fight in the musical wars these days. Seeing a good fight like this between sousaphones is rare, but the hype is like no other.
I’ve been playing Tuba for 5 years now and blaring is absolutely something you can get to sound good in certain songs. I had a few songs this year in concert band where I was breaking the note for effect and the band director loved it
What does it mean to break the note? My son plays tuba for concert and Sousaphone for marching season, this may be something he could do. If anything play around and have fun with it.
@@ashley1583 it’s where you use more air pressure than what can go through the horn at a time. Making a sharp “truck horn” effect. If you look into “blatting” you can find some good ways to explain it. Currently typing this after a comp lol.
TheDeadeye Warrior I always will harbor a slight resentment of fiberglass sousas because there is a guy in the upcoming freshmans who is a total ass to everyone and he has to play a fiber glass

I love how I listened to this exact same video more than 4 years ago. Before my 6th grade year ended. Because I was going to switch from baritone to tuba in middle school. And I was just interested on what it’d be like. And man I was intrigued so much by the way they played these tubas. This video literally led to so much success through my Middle/Highschool band career. Well not career.. but ya know. But… that second song bro!! I learned how to play after I started with tuba all those years ago. Still haven’t stopped playing it, here I am in 11th grade. And still in marching band, AND a section leader of 2 underclassmen below me. In conclusion… this video helped me love the tuba more than I did back then… Btw loved when the second band played the first time. That’s the song I learned to play.(@ 2:51)Thanks for your time 🧍🏼👌🏻
NCCU's last time was just the sexiest part of the battle. I'm in my school's jazz band, and we're playing Superstition too. They def get my vote for clarity and overall sound quality. Very talented tuba players over there.

Marching Sousa is actually quite easy after your first few months of pain. It really doesn't feel cool at all due to the lack of a real horns up. Contras where it's at :)
I played concert tuba and sousaphone for marching band events… brings a tear to my eye being the heartbeat in all music. Blaring is our way for marching band to keep in step also so we all March in beat
Ahhhhhhhh yea!!!! ST AUG!!!! From Class of 1988!!! Glad to see the Band grow and them Basses!!!! My Instrument when I was there.Tell Dr Jefferies I said Wassup!!! FALCON Priiiiiide!!!

Started in sixth grade with an Eb that, if it had slipped off my chair, would have taken me with it, requiring EMTs with torches to extricate my skinny little body. Sousaphone in high school; some scholarship money to hold up the low end for four years at Westminster in Salt Lake City. Golly that was 57 years ago! I am loving reliving some of that as I watch these cats. Forever we are part of the brothersisterhood.
Nah. I'm a sousaphone/tuba player, your lips just feel numb for a little bit, and then it goes away. When you play the tuba for a while, you get use to it
I'm watching this while cleaning up an Eb helicon made in ~1923... I can't decide which side I like more. I think the grey shirts were tighter as a section, but I liked the effort from the maroon, and felt their vibe a bit more. Either way; this made me want to be that age again, and be in such a group. I was the only tuba player for many many highshool band events who showed. No shame on either side in this video. Everyone Showed Up.
I played low brass for years. In a pep band one year I played so hard my lips split. When I opened my spit valve a ton of blood came out. It was painful after it was over, but while playing I paid no mind to it and didn't miss a beat. No pun intended
I think that some of y’all saying that this is “blaring” and “no control” forget that these two things are not mutually exclusive. You can have a bad TONE, but still be able to control so that you don’t have waves in your sound. Like wise, you can have GOOD tone, but with terrible control, it doesn’t amount to anything. You have to have the perfect balance of both to be able to play like this, and people downplaying this style of playing make me really mad because they simply don’t understand this. When you’re in marching band, this is EXACTLY the sound you should be going for, as long as you don’t cover up the lead parts. Nuff said!
All y'all complaining about them "blaring". That's literally what these competitions are meant for. Blaring tubas having at it.
jck1794 ya and its awesome
jck1794 they are not blaring they are blating.
I don’t consider it as blaring nor blasting, I consider blasting “non-controllable”. These guys can control it very well, and I like it!
@@hamada3696 controlled blast is best blast.
Well only if they aren't half a step or more out of tune
i'm pretty sure the only reason why we all watched this is because we either play or find the tuba as a interresting horn
Very true
I dont and found this video to be awesome. at least not before this video. might have sparked an interest now though.

Keyshaun Butler Tuba player right HERE! GO TUBAS!
Jonathan Smith who do you play for
SOUSAPHONE, NOT TUBA
Sousaphones are the only brass instrument that sound good with blaring
All of them sound good if you can do it well.
John Doe | trombone??
Trumpet??
Doc | trumpet is debatable, it’s really hard to make it sound good, especially a whole section of them
@@dariusxxo unless they all there are 3-4 parts with a band with 30-40 trumpets, then that would sound great.
Sousaphone holds glory. You can’t be a Tuba/sousaphone player and not be passionate.
every Instruments in fact
God how I wish this were true 😭 although I will say that at least most of them are pretty passionate
Amen

+Burdurk I have to agree. I wish my band used the contra honestly

YES, THANK YOU! I have been saying that for ever.
Yeah, buts terrible technique. It's cool if you're if you're a pro but it can ruin begginers/ nonpro players playing ability

Most of the comments are from tuba players (like me) so technically there are more than a hundred tubas in one place on the internet

theres a tuba warriors discord

never give the slight edge to the ensemble that sounds the worse...
