@@JohnnyYeTaecanUktena You're not missing anything, I assure you. I don't watch "wrasslin'" myself, but I've seen parts of some episodes and it's pretty cheesy. It used to be a real sport, then it changed into the steroid soap opera it is now, with "faces" ("babyfaces", good guys), "heels" (villains), and kayfabe (maintaining the illusion that it's real).

Everyone has that moment where they run out of material and they start drawing upon their life experiences to fill the conversation void. A few highly committed ones can pull the mental trick of converting their personal experiences into character-appropriate lore on the spot, but if you're streaming while tired or otherwise mentally compromised your brain is going to resist putting in that extra effort. So like she said it's most likely the Just Chatting endurance streamers who are logically going to run out of material as well as fuks to give fastest.
I personally just think vtubers have transitioned heavily from the character portrayal to the i want an avatar that represents me while I stream type behavior. I rarely see as many vtubers actually try to sit within the themes and character they sit themselves in beyond the basics. Its a shame since im actually fiending for that type of vtuber out there as its pretty hard outside of hololive and a few indies.
The best for staying character is the twins, but it's because it's the twins, they developed the characters around themselves and they stream in the same room together, those are their normal voices these days which are VERY different from their voices 10 years ago, 10 years of singing and roleplaying does takes toll on the vocal chords. Even Calli speaks a lot softer as does Subaru. (Subaru once wrote a read a letter wear she expressed how destroyed her throat was from all of the yelling, she is a naturally loud person but being loud for 4 - 6 hours a plus she was also going to singing practice several nights a week. But for the most part, outside of the girls being lewd like Nerissa, or a memelord, most of the Hololive girls tend to drop their character outside of saying they're a reaper or a demon or their catch phrase. For the average streamer it's hard to pull off for a full 4 hours day in and day out, so I just watch with a smirk and wait for the person's personality to show through the memes and faux lore.
To me, I think it's really killed the enjoyment of mainstream Vtubing to a degree I can't really describe. Except for like Korone (doggo!) because she has the will to keep up the act while being herself as a mainstream exception but other people aren't like this. Smaller vtubers stay like this but it's just... not good for the industry. It's why I'm getting sick of it a little.
To be fair, I think that heavy characterization is really really difficult to pull off outside of a corporate environment. Hololive girls have all their lore coordinated with their genmates, and everyone in the company is largely on the same page when it comes to collabs. For indies, most of the character heavy ones I know of make mostly solo content, because trying to stay in character during collabs where everyone involved might have different levels of commitment to the bit, or lore that conflicts with yours, can be both rough to do and awkward to watch.
The problem is that most streamers aren't skilled enough actors or storytellers to even do that in the first place. Even the most popular ones. Even when in character they are usually very unconvincing.
Now I want a video game we could all join in where everyone can remain in character, including fans. I'm picturing some Planetside 2-esque mass warfare thing where you get to be a more powerful unit as you perform better. Each commander's a VTuber with a themed army. GEEGA's set for three flavors of troops. Juniper Actias, you've got the moth legions. Animal Vtubers have it pretty easy with just, bigger or more weird animals. Undead Racoons for Snuffy with a heavy nature/shroom theme. Plus plenty of armies would make sense to work together so you could have neat alliances, what with Ironmouse commanding Hell.
Idols are specifically paid to roleplay, and not every vtuber is an idol, big difference. even then they slip out of much of a huge chunk of the character within the first couple of weeks.
I give them a pass, as in the first year they had no idea what they were doing. As for Advent and Justice, only FWMC and ERB debuted with a strong kayfabe, and they're still at it. I wouldn't consider background lore as important to this conversation. If so, all Vtubers with debuts and lore videos would be guilty as charged.
I will defend this one because Hololive English was never meant to be kayfabe. As first gens they've managed to keep the base characterization and their mascots completely intact. Who else has done the same?
This may sound dystopian, but i believe vtubers will essentially work similarly to ppls avatars in sci-fi fantasy stories like "ready player one," and to a certain extent thats pretty cool.
Eh, the roleplaying is just pointless imo. The lore always feels like just an excuse to stream with an anime avatar, so why not just ditch the pretense and be a streamer with an anime avatar? It feels just uncomfortable to me to watch a vtuber trying to keep up kayfabe.
Kayfabe is overrated and lore video is a waste of money HOWEVER You should still, at least, pay some lip service to your character identity. Instead putting up a grandiose act, integrate them into your 'real' personality.
Disagree. All this background generates new layer of media. Tons of hololive fan animations like Myth Bad ending, Detective diaries, Return to Atlantis. Or hundreds of games (right now I'm waiting Chrono Gears the most because of platformer with time manipulation, thanks to Kronii lore and background). And thousands of thousands fan arts.
@@antonioscendrategattico2302 You can't call all youtube indie animations pointless. There is point, a story. Even Gura vs Kaela animation is based on their love to DMC characters (Dante and Vergil). @@x149te Yeah I'm not saying that it's pointless to make independent animations or fanart. I'm just saying that it's pointless to try and pretend there is some story to the character the streamer is playing on screen when in reality they're, well, streaming.

Dedication to the bit is one of the reasons I've liked Fuwamoco. The mask never drops (even in their PL).
Having watched their previous life, that is just how they are.
The thing about Fuwamoco’s bit is that it just gets more powerful the more they do it.
