Extremely useful comparison - thank you both. And I loved the Metrum.
I do wonder about the colouration comments regarding the Metrum compared to the SMSL. Could it be that the SMSL is lacking energy in the lower midrange and the Metrum is more accurate and so naturally "muddying" the middle midrange, just like what happens with acoustic instruments in real life?
I suspect the SMSL may be doing the colouring here by artificially making the middle midrange sound cleaner, whether by accident or by design.
Wouldn't it be great to get the viewpoints of the recording engineers for each piece of music !

I have the feeling the Metrum is a bit on the dark side. Also if you compare it to the newer Sonnet Pasithea, the Amethyst is a bit warm. But it's a nice kind of warm. Not muddy.

@@TheAlphaAudio I respect your opinion as my experience in comparing dacs is extremely limited compared to yours.

If you listen back to the Mammal Hands piece and compare both, you will hear the textures in the bass clarinet are quite different. The SMSL is ‘more correct’, compared to a real life instrument that is. Not that ‘more correct’ is the only measure here, I think the liveliness of the Metrum is preferred by a vast majority of people, who got to enjoy a DAC at home. The SMSL has a lot of other aspects which kind of take away from the listening enjoyment.

@@jmtennapel Did as you said and agree. Moreover both the piano and bass clarinet sounded muddy and boomy on my system* on the Metrum and the sound of the ride cymbal sounded more real and more enjoyable on the SSL. Nice. Myself i have the B.M.C UltraDAC and the B.M.C PureDAC on my 2 soundsystems. I like them. If you call the company you speak with the owner. He is Spanish not German.

My discovery is also that the volume of your DAC has invluence on the sound. On my systems with the B.M.C's volume on 30. The rest of the volume controlled by my computers. The input level to your source.
