    For heaven´s sake: the maestro was 84 when he played this and not only his age, but also this organ posed him a limitation of sorts for this repertoire ... Let us just be grateful for the fact that one of the world´s most iconic organists of the late 20th and early 21st century maintained such close ties to Holland and the Dutch organ landscape as witnessed here (I found out about this remarkable organ only thanks to this recording!). I recommend listening to this recording WITHOUT watching the video, as the unsteady visual impression may distract the attention from an otherwise quite impressive musical performance. Also, I find his registrations very original and colorful and (thank God) not so noisy (unlike most recordings)! Moreover, in this context I would like to recall to memory Marcel Dupré, one of the greatest organists of all times (not by chance called "The Paganini of the Organ" by his contemporaries), whose staggering virtuosity and stunning improvisation skills on the "King of Instruments" was a rich source of inspiration to Jean Guillou. I remember once having bought a vinyl LP of Dupré with his last recording on "his" organ at St. Sulpice in Paris, when I was still a student. I also remember how surprised I was about his technically "poor" performance of such relatively undifficult pieces as Franck´s organ chorale no. 3 but then again, I realized how deformed (I suppose by rheumatism) his legendary fingers looked on the LP´s front cover. I do not remember exactly at which age Marcel Dupré made that final record, however considering the fact that he died at 85 years of age, he must have been younger or at most slightly older than Jean Guillou in this video. Comparing the "easiness" of Franck´s organ chorales with the organ transciption of Moussorgky´s "Pictures of an Exhibition", I would like to challenge any critics of Jean Guillou´s performance in this recording to prove that they can do a better job ... at the age of 84, properly understood 🙂

      I wonder if the visual impression is caused by the slow "action" of the organ? I have played some organs with very slow pneumatic action (as opposed to tracker or modern electric actions) that can be a second of more from pressing the key to the actual sound coming out of the pipe.

I have fond memories of Jean Guillou "talking" me through Mass @ St. Eustace in Paris. I learned much from his experience, and now, in our "riper years" we still remember how glorious was our music. It was my great honour to play so many Organs for Mass in Paris., & throughout France over the years. I am now in my 80s's..... Bryan Australia.

      I'm sorry, but the St. Eustache organ was not really rebuilt; it was essentially replaced, behind the old facade.
      I've heard that Guillou received quite a bit of critical press at the time for this decision.

    • @WouterTukker
      @WouterTukker 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@EElgar1857 That is not quite true: Jan van den Heuvel (just like his great example Aristide Cavaillé-Coll before him) used as much of the old pipework as was feasible within the scope and setup of the new organ as designed by Maestro Jean Guillou. For example, van den Heuvel maintained the old 32-foot Contre-Trombone in the pedal although he found it too weak as a foundation for the full organ and therefore, he built an additional 32-foot Contre-Bombarde (making the entire church shake on its foundations) at his own costs, dedicating it to the City of Paris (the commissioner and contractor for the organ-building project and until today owner of the organ). Still however, he decided to maintain the Trombone as it was still in a usable state and now it functions as a kind of Contra-Bassoon, not so dominant as the Bombarde and suitable for music passages that do not require the full organ but still benefit from the effect of a 32-foot reed stop.

    • @EElgar1857
      @EElgar1857 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@WouterTukker I don't mean to argue, but it's very common, even in extensive rebuilds, to keep a 32' stop, because of the difficulty of removing it, and the huge expense to replace it. The decision to keep the Trombone, and add a new, more powerful Bombarde is certainly a good one. But can you confirm that any major choruses (Principals, Mixtures, Flutes, Trompettes, etc.) were retained from the old organ? My Organ Hist. Soc. buddies told me that almost nothing was kept, but they could be wrong.
      I've only heard this organ once, and briefly; I was not impressed, and found its tutti overly loud and bright, but that's just a quickly-reached impression.

    • @WouterTukker
      @WouterTukker 2 месяца назад +1

      @@EElgar1857 Maybe you heard the organ shortly after its dedication, organs typically become more mellow in sound after a few years of service: I am pretty sure this is exactly what we will witness when the renovated organ of Notre-Dame de Paris will resume service after the cathedral will reopen its gates: sharp, loud and not overly pleasing to the ear ... That is not uncommon for organs, just give it some time ... Back to the organ of Saint-Eustache: not only is its sound much more mellow than after its dedication, it is in a rather poor state and its titular organist Thomas Ospital is actively raising funds to reinstate the organ to its former glory ... It is almost unbelievable that a Van-Den-Heuvel-Organ declines while its builder is still alive, yet there may be a slight discrepancy between the quality of his organ-building compared to that of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll whose works seem to endure and edure ...

      Daarnaast zijn er veel arrangeurs geweest die "de schilderijen hebben beetgepakt", en door zeer bekwame lieden zijn gespeeld op orgel.

      Antwoord op uw punt: voor mij helpt het inderdaad niet. Guillou heeft werkelijk alle type orgels wereldwijd geëxamineerd, dus "vreemd orgel" en "live" zijn voor mij geen sterke motieven om te doen alsof het fenomeen "minder nauwkeurig" een incident zou zijn...

    I found that Jean Guillou's rhythm always not that accurate....

      @Adrian-ul7so Maestro Guillou was extremely self-willed, in particular regarding his choice of tempi: that is not a matter of inaccuracy but rather of a deliberate choice of interpretation ... When I first heard his integral interpretation of César Franck´s works for grand organ I was shocked at first by his apparently deliberate choice of tempo, however after multiple replays it all started to make sense to me, one just needs some time and patience to get used to that and even so: if one cannot appreciate it, one can always agree to disagree with his choice of tempo 🙂

    I accept that he was a great organist but his performance in the recording of the Jongen "Symphonie Concertante" with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Eduardo Mata is not particularly good, the "toccata" finale is especially bad. It's played just too fast although I don't know if this was Guillou's or Mata's idea.

      @mendax1773 Maestro Guillou was admittedly better a soloist than an ensemble player, therefore what you write does not surprise me at all ...

      Deze muziek is heel erg moeilijk om goed te kunnen spelen, en voor Jean Guillou 84 was dit het eerste orgelconcert op dit orgel.

    It is a shame that the incorrect use of the apostrophe mars the credits. HTH. HAND.

      It is Musorgsky’s (Aka Mussorgsky’s or Moussorgsky’s) composition so the apostrophe use isn’t incorrect. Moussorgsky - “Pictures at an exhibition” also works. There was only one Moussorgsky and on the evidence of this recital only one Jean Guillou! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the master of the organ in action. Such a variety of colours. I thought I would miss the percussiveness of the original pianoforte score but I thought wrong…😊❤
