As much as I love Mussorgsky's original piano version - especially the 1967 recording by Vladimir Ashkenazy, this runs a close second - as a transcription, of course. And, yes, I am more than familiar with the various orchestrations and 'reimaginings' on offer, but none come near to doing full justice to the piece. Just my opinion, of course! Thank you SO MUCH, Bert, for this upload. No advertisements, either! You are, truly, a gentleman!

For me, Jean Guillou remains the Orpheus of the organ, at least for the second half of the 20th century ... Since then, many other great talents in organ improvisation were born and have emerged, yet Jean Guillou´s legacy and "his" organ at St. Eustache in Paris (impressively rebuilt by Jan van den Heuvel from Dordrecht, NL) will always be a rich source of inspiration for all improvising organists after him ... My neighbor in Leiden of the Netherlands (that was in the 1990´s) drew my attention to Jean Guillou´s artistry and bit by bit, I succumbed to his charm for which my thanks are due forever: may both my neighbor Hans and Maestro Guillou rest in peace and may his musical heritage last forever to those appreciating the true and great Art of Organ!

Wer Guillou etwas näher kannte, kann sagen, daß er sich bei und mit diesen beiden Themen identifizieren konnte - nach seinem Gesichtsausdruck zufolge, fühlte er sich recht wohl dabei, meine ich. Diese im 84. Lebensjahr stehend immer noch stupende Technik - auch im Pedal -, die der Meister-Organist hier zum Besten gab, ist bewundernswert. Er wird weiterhin für viele nachkommende Organisten ein großes Vorbild bleiben - mich persönlich hat seine immerzu währende Freundlichkeit und Achtsamkeit tief beeindruckt, verbunden mit Güte, und Interesse am Mitmenschen. Er war in der Tat auch ein großer Lehrer, etwa, indem er seine Schüler aufforderte, Musikstücke im Ausdruck auf vier, fünf Varianten zu probieren, um "weg im Stil von einer Bahnhof-Kapelle zu kommen", wie er mal einem Studenten gegenüber sagte - es handelte sich damals um die Pedalflügel-Stücke op. 56 von Schumann. Für mich wird dieser Mensch unvergesslich bleiben ... er kam oftmals zu Konzerten und Meisterklassen nach Wien; er. feierte seinen 80. Geburtstag im Kreise von Schülern unter anderem auch in Wien. Nochmals herzlichen Dank, und liebe Grüße!

This is a treasure of a recording: his sense of timbres is unsurpassed, and overall flow of the work is masterful. There's occasional rushing and a few flubbed notes, but I hope to play as well at his age. Amazing!

I have the recording of Pictures at an Exhibition from Guillou's 1988 release and it was incredible! Listening to the master is one thing, but seeing him in action really brings life into the performance. He even has the appearance of a music professor, adding more to this. Thank you for uploading this treasure!

A different but interesting version by this elderly organist who can still play. Hope he can continue with his playing if still alive as I note the recording was made in 2014.

Amazing playing, especially at his age. Few are able to retain this level of skill this late in life. His playing has always been outstanding, and it such a joy to see that he was able to maintain in his later years.

Such amazing dexterity. The greatness of his artistry at this age is inspiring . He demonstrates a merging of the player with the composer and the instrument demonstrating how great artists literally bring music to life.

A great performance by a great musician and organ virtuoso! Unfortunately the spelling of his name is not correct (minus an "i"), but this does not affect the musical qualities of this video clip.
