Tornado impacting the Mount Etna, IA area. There were two tornadoes on the ground at the same time. Includes drone video of the tornado and damage to wind turbines. One was on fire.

If it were a weak one, they probably would have been fine. Not much of anything would hold up to one like this.
Those windmills are huge and sturdy. A single blade has to be carried on an oversize semi and still sticks out a bit. Even so, against tornado-force winds, they get twisted and bent. It's insane how strong tornadoes are.

These windmills are not posing any danger to anyone. Unless somebody had one that was within 150-200 feet of their house, I don’t see why they should be restricted.

You guys had a crazy day! Lots of great videos--that drone shot with the turbines and the car passing between gave an amazing perspective on how large they are and the power that it must take to destroy them.

@@Botobursta reactor would, not the plant. The substations, transmission lines, perimeter radiation detectors, etc. would all be gone. Other buildings like the generator hall would be damaged at least. You can’t have an operating nuke plant unless all of these things are online and operating correctly.

Oil and wires in the turbine that is burning. I watch another video and the blades blew off before it fell down and caught on fire.

There are 70,500 wind turbines in America and a couple got hit by a tornado. I don’t think we have to rethink the placement of turbines it wasn’t that big of a loss.

Just think what these tornados will do to a power plant or power substation. A tornado will make a huge mess of them, especially outside facilities. A substation would be like a plate of spaghetti. Forget knocking down a few wind turbines.
They take down power lines for sure, but a power station, like a coal, nuclear, or LNG, I don't think they've been taken offline by a direct hit in recent memory. Those windmills will take months to replace, not a power station. That can come back online pretty quick. They're built to withstand natural occurrences, not windmills.
Tornado wouldnt hurt a nuclear power plant at all snowflake, It would be minor. Enjoy that black smoke, hydraulic fluid leaching into the earth and those scrap turbines that cannot be recycled. Your very uneducated. Because even with Turbines you need sub stations.
@socal33 A tornado definitely can destroy any auxiliary facilities at a power station, which can cause the power station to be offline for extended periods of time.

Can you cite any coal, nuclear, or LNG facilities 100% destroyed by a tornado in recent memory? An entire solar facility, thousands of panels, was just destroyed by hail in Texas! That's a huge amount of toxic solar panels that have to be buried because they are not recycled. High output per facilities are not destroyed by hail. If you want to live by solar or wind, have at it. But I prefer a stable and reliable power source like the ones that built out civilization.
Nuke plants are designed to scram even if a tornado gets close.

The fact wind towers are placed in our oceans with salt and Hurricanes to contend with makes me wonder what people are thinking when they place them there !

These turbines are designed to withstand straight line winds of around 155mph or so. You think that's fragile? Houses are designed to something like 90mph.

This is why green energy *WILL NEVER FULLY REPLACE* current energy sources. This windmill farm will be out for months. The infrastructure (aka wiring alone) within that farm will take a few months to repair. Imagine a small town near that farm depends 50% of their energy from there.
Be interesting to see how long this windmill farm is back up at full strength again.

Look at how many windmills are left untouched in the background, so only 0.5-1% of this farm is destroyed.
Have you ever seen an Iowa wind farm? They’re spaced hundreds of feet apart, and it can go on for miles. A tornado cutting right through the middle of a wind farm probably wouldn’t take out more than a handful of them. You can even see this in the video, around the four minute mark - in a drone shot, a couple of windmills are down, but many more are still up. And wind power has been common in Iowa for 20 years now. If tornadoes were the threat you think they are, they’d know by now.
Only 4 of over 55 came down, as the other ones are still online. And there is a neighboring Berkshire wind farm with another 55 turbines. Also don’t worry, Warren Buffet can afford to file the insurance claim to replace these.

Not really. Utilities usually go with the cheapest “it fall down, replace it with another one” strategy. It got Berkshire (same owner of this toppled turbine) and PG&E in big trouble with the west coast fires.
