Unbelievable... ROG Ally vs Steam Deck 5 games AAA tested Игры
Valve and AMD cooked up MAGIC with the Deck APU, absolutely wild
@@z_MVP_Z I'm waiting for the next refresh of the steam deck, where the battery is much better, maybe like Nintendo Switch refresh where the chip wasn't power hungry anymore and only eats like 5watts
@@Jaxv3r I 100% share the sentiment. If they give us a refresh with a more colour accurate screen, larger battery, and a slight bump in the CPU side of things while keeping the crazy low wattage efficiency, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Would be my dream PC handheld.
Other companies have proven that it's possible to stick a larger battery while keeping things compact and just as light!
For me low wattage performance is the key reason to own a handheld, it lets me play the games I’m playing no matter where I am. That’s why I bought the steam deck after waiting for the ROG Ally reviews came out. Simple thing is, till MS creates a different and lighter version of windows, it isn’t fit for a handheld. It’s too inefficient.
Custom apu/hardware built for gaming will always win...
Steamdeck apu is built on same architecture as ps5/series s/x apu but for 720p... As long as games are supported for ps5, series x, steamdeck will be fine with medium/low setting...
Literally bought the steam deck 4 days ago thinking I was taking a risk against the Asus but after seeing this I'm convinced I made the right decision.
Steam deck show that optimization is more important than raw power of hardware
But rog ally not officially release yet, of course they will keep update the rog ally optimization after officially release
They should've compared the day one released steam deck with all the bugs vs. the day one released rog ally

if this is your first time running all these games on the Ally, then the Ally is working extra hard to compile shaders, while the Deck already has per-compiled shaders. So that could be an explanation for the lack of performance on the Ally here.

@@jeffreypeters5578 lmao legend
Strongly agree.
it is wonderful. i got mine about two weeks ago.
The Ally has performed better in other tests. That said, im happy with my deck. Its not just about performance. Its the fact that I believe most of these windows portables that have come out, will be abandoned by their creators soon enough.
I dont expect Valve to go that route. They've put way too much into the deck. Its gonna outlast them all, bet on that.
Despite Valve having history on abandoning hardware… The Steam Deck looks to be the exception, especially when Steam Deck 2 is already under development. It’s only going to get better. 🎉
I hear the most recent BIOS for the Ally is borked. I'm sure that can be fixed. The build quality issues, though ...
*it's
I hope you're correct, but let's not forget valves track record with Hardware is abysmal.
I hope valve fix the battleeye issue or other games with anti cheat
That's strange bc some reviewers from a few weeks ago were able to get significantly better performance with the Ally vs steam deck. Either way for me I'm keeping my deck for now I don't think it's worth spending that much money just to go from a deck to an Ally and after seeing this video makes me feel even more confident but strange for sure.
For that price i hope so
I have my Rog Ally the FPS counter is bugged at the moment. I downloaded the afterburner and the FPS meter was way higher than the one supplied by ASUS.
Is this comparison 25W for both? Pointless adjusting all settings to parity and and not the watts. This means the Ally would really suck at 15W.
@@brasso4984where can I get afterburner from?
Paid reviews man , don't believe them . Always wait for the public to get hands on
Hey. What MicroSD card should I get? UHS-I or UHS-II? is that enough to run games at a good load time? how does this work?
did you have all the updates and latest firmware ? seems to do a lot for the performance
Steam OS is probably the difference maker. It is made specifically for the deck whereas Windows 11 doesn't have the granular support that Steam has.
He’s got a defective unit for sure when it comes to performance at high tdp
@@mcwaller123doubt it
It’s not. There’s some windows overhead but it’s nowhere near that bad. He has a defective unit, or he doesn’t have the latest bios/updates or something else isn’t right. Watch other reviews, this is the only one that shows performance this bad.
@@mcwaller123 when u are hype, u are blind
I think his unit is crap. I have seen the Ally support 1440P resolution and handling CSgo at 140 fps just fine. in here it can barely cut the game at 1080P at 120fps. doesnt make sense.
My Ally doesn't do any of the negative things yours does. When I exit a game it exit immediately and the games boots up really fast.
thanks for taking the time to do this review. it was a bit to get through but overall i like that u went through the settings and stuff in real time.
What does the Rog do @ 15 watt that's what I'm wondering.Sry haven't finished vid can't hear it @work will finish on lunch. Also elden ring on higher detail should be tried since gpu is higher and deck has to run on low.Curious if ghost spectre 11 would increase performance as well
Thanks for the work! Such a bummer, ASUS has been definitely having some issues between AMD motherboards and now it sure seems like the QC is lacking on your unit. I get how they might not catch a chip that isn't performing well, but a broken button should certainly be caught.
Asus Said they fixed the stuck button issue, had a feeling that it wasn’t.
@@eplugplay8409i tried getting my buttons to stick for 10 minutes the moment I unboxed, they were completely fine.
@@eplugplay8409 It's fixed on mine cause I don't have any issues
I'm not entirely sure but for Apex it wants 8gb vram and above on High settings. Since Rog ally is windows, you have to set it manually, even there was an explanation on their site about it. I know that SteamOS can solve the Vram issue automatically.
I think your unit has some kind of problem, it yields to me at many more fps than it gives you, the difference is big, something happens, you have installed the bios drivers etc?
Huh seems to run fine on mine. Did you do all the patching?
Check that your resolution is set to 720p in the Ally setting panel that pulls out to the left. Because game is set to same resolution as the steam deck but it still super sampling to 1080p for the Ally unless you change it to 720p from what I said above.
I just got my ally and having the same issue. Even though I also have windows on my steam deck in getting better FPS on the steam deck. Very strange. All firm aware is updated to the latest
Newest firmware reduces performance in order to save battery life.
@@FLCLimaxxxwhere you read that??
@@FLCLimaxxx here is the thing. I had to go to BestBuy and buy another one because the first unit would not go to sleep. Terrible performance. Random freezes. Even the fingerprint button was a hit and miss. This second unit seems much better. Even the battery seems to last longer. I did notice that even if you are getting less than 60fps the game looks smooth because of FreeSync. I haven’t testers yet. Will know today if performance is better or worse
Do you still have to be on a wait-list to get the Steam Deck? I know the Ally is available and in stock .
Did you already update the BIOS? My son got this yesterday and he had to use the ROG updater.
Please do more comparisons in terms of performance on many triple A titles. This content rocks 👌🤟
the ally is already obvious in running better fps than steam deck. No need to do more videos as there are a lot here on youtube. That is if you are still deciding what to get.
Thanks for the review. I'm wondering, did the early reviewers get paid off or shipped modded units. I just watched another guy playing a couple games on it and it was also bad. I had this in my cart but ended up not ordering. I feel like I dodged a bullet there. On the plus side maybe I can get a deal on a steam deck 🙂
How do we get the steam deck now? Its all sold out on steam this whole month. I really want to buy one too
@@isaX5 wow!
Looks like steam deck is still selling so well!
Glad to know.
You did. The Ally is good, but it needs a lot of improvement. I just wish it was as simple and integrated as the deck. The deck FEELS good with it's UI and UX. The Ally feels disconnected and Janky.. Impersonal.. The deck feels unique and you can tell it's creators love it. The Ally creator's you can feel just want a quick buck based on performance and power. Let's see who wins the race.
Watched a review on a defective unit and made up your mind. How about the tons of good review videos of the Ally out there? Not worth considering? Haha. Glad you didn't get one. Makes it more available for those wanting one. =)
@@Strykeshot Well happy to be of service in reducing the ally demand lol. These issues are just another plus in the glad I didn't buy it column. The larger reason I didn't buy it was because it has no usb4 and only the proprietary connector for a hugely overpriced mobile egpu. If this had usb4 I would have it. So far this hasn't even budged the used prices for steam decks so that also is not at point I would consider it even though it lacks usb4.
Which version of the Ally is this? 😅🤔
Thanks for all your hard work on this!
Is it possible that you received a piece with manufactured internal problems ?? additionally to the bumper problem, because i've seen lots of comparison videos with way different results than this one.
Run the Ally at 1080p Medium in elden ring on the Ally and you will notice the difference. The GPU is less bottlenecked. It’s why the default settings on it were 720p High
He's a bit retarded for running it on different than recommended setting and then go "what is going on?" Honestly some people
Farming simulator 22 on both! Im wondering is it worth to switch from SD to Asus
How did you fix the bugs on the ROG???
Asking for a friend
Same issue with the left bumper on mine. Noticed it wasn't as clicky as the right bumper during unboxing aaaaand then... hoping I can just exchange the unit since I did a physical pick up at a brick and mortar (assuming it's still in stock). Honestly thinking I may just pick up a Deck, the bugs and the set up were a d*mn headache and I'm not even close to finished.
I'm trying really hard not to sound like a valve fanboy but; when i got my steamdeck set-up was done in about 4-5 minutes and i was playing games right out the box within the hour (due to my slow ass internet while downloading games)
Once ASUS updates drivers, fixes bugs, etc. I'm sure the higher performance they promised will be there, so if you're in this for max graphics and higher framerates etc. then the rog ally is for you. But if you wanna just pick up and play your games and have ease of use UI-wise for a pretty cheap price then I recommend the steamdeck.
@@h.serafin1489 I agree, and I drunk the kool-aid. The ROG Ally was all the rage.. And I had to try it! And so I did and I was met with.. Windows JANK.. My games looked and played pretty good, but dealing with windows just put a bad taste in my mouth and everything just felt unoptimized if that makes sense.
You bought a flop
I'm wondering if there's a chance that your unit has further defects since I can't fathom why performance would be lower when taking into consideration all the other benchmarks I've been looking at. Good video though, need more like this.

Thanks for the comparison on the two systems! Your steam deck obviously gets a lot of use, I'm glad you enjoy it so much. I got a deck, in part because of your videos, and I love it. After watching this video, I'm glad I went with the deck!
For FPS have you tried using afterburner instead of Asus software and also did you do this video with everything updated such as armory crate, bios, windows 11 updates, etc? If you did all these things and shoulder button still doesn’t work and FPS is low I would maybe exchange for another unit if you can (and also because of sticky buttons which the verge also reported in their review units). I was at bestbuy today looking to see if they had any model units and they said they didn’t but they have 33 units available, told the guy I’m sticking with my steam deck for now to see how Asus supports the device then maybe grab one later down the line but not right now especially after seeing some videos similar to this one
The fact that he has to do all of that makes the Deck a better option IMO. The headache I had with setting up the Ally was almost unbearable. I games resizing themselves like it did for him in the Elden Ring showcase. One time one of the automatic updates randomly updated the Ally while I was gaming lol. I had to get a temporary code sent to me and Microsoft sent me a 6 digit code instead of a 7 digit code that they were asking me for. Then I had to reset my password in order to get in. I got in then I was bombarded with updates and finally, after a bios update the Ally would randomly boot to BIOS and I would have to hard reset my unit which in most cases, if done enough, harms the unit. Very exhausting experience. Not really worth 1080p and 120 HZ when I just go get on my rig and play at 4k 144 FPS. So yeah.. Ally needs some work.
When is the ally scheduled to drop?
Looks like you need to load the GPU more and play at 1080p or higher quality settings. Could be a CPU bottleneck.
Thank you for the review. Other reviewers reviewed their ally unit that they received for free and plugged in while you reviewed it with your own money . Respect!
Not to mention this dude is giving you a REAL SIDE BY SIDE test instead of a paid promotion, and he's not sugar-coating his opinion because of that. Much respect.
Keep having to manually change the GPU clock frequency on the Deck to 1600 even I have a persistent profile on. All other changes seem to be saved fine. Apparently this bug was fixed? Well ummm no, at least not for emulation. Not a massive issue but still a bit annoying having to go in the menu each time. I tried defaulting and reapplying the changes incl. the clock frequency I desire but nope, it just won't save as a template. It's a Wii game I'm playing on Dolphin BTW if that helps?
What's up widdat?
can you chek?! one of owner who has both devices claims that at same settings and at same TDP Ally shows not only higher FPS but looks prettier in graphic aspect in most of games
Just canceled my order for Asus rog ally extreme. Thanks for the video!
The Steam Deck having similar performance but having a FAR better UI and accessory support ecosystem makes it the easy choice. Saddling a portable with Windows immediately puts you at a disadvantage, it seems.
For your No Man's Sky test, the Ally was in Borderless mode while the Steam Deck was in Fullscreen. Since the Ally runs Windows, being in Borderless may have affected performance slightly.
Yep. The OS being made for the hardware is a big plus here. ASUS and MSI (MSI Claw) can only bolt on software to windows. And they don't have the best rep when it comes to their software (MSI Center, ASUS Armory crate etc).
Also did u do the bios update? That helps with it
Would you get the steam dex over rog alley?
This is what is called an honest review. Better not to get hyped with all that social media stuff and sponsored youtuber videos. Ally is not a true mobile gaming unit just yet. Unless you plug it to 65w, it is on par with the deck most of the time

No hate but how did your left thumb get like that ? I’m just curious .
Great job with the comparison! Personally, I will stick with the Steam Deck. The touchpads and additional paddles on the back add a lot of versatility (IMO makes playing RTS/MMO/ARPG games much easier), not to mention the dramatically better battery life/efficiency.
Dramatically is a stretch when you know how to limit the Ally with the games you want
Steamdeck ftw.
Asus battery life is fine plus it has the paddles also.
@@aiden1064 two or four paddles? Two vs four is the difference between never having to use the face buttons (four paddles) and having to use at least two of them (two paddles). To me, it makes a difference in functionality and comfort
Joke post. Dramatically LMAOOOO
I don’t doubt that the ally is slightly more powerful but the fact that you yourself got a defective product is already a huge red flag for me since I also tried getting teo different devices for ROG products which were both defective, my sister also tried getting one of their laptops and even that came with a heating problem that would have killed it in the first week. I was expecting the same things to happen when I got my steam deck but everything’s been working great. Really happy with my steam deck, definitely need to be ready to play new games and revisit some old favorites with it, can’t set your expectations too high when it comes to handheld performance. Though the deck is so much more adaptable to most of my games
It is with particular consideration that the SteamOS on the Deck made the most out of its hardware, and even has BIOS that can adjust how much of the RAM is partitioned for GPU use, which is a major help in handling high graphics games.
Do you have the z1 cpu on the ally or the z1 extreme if you have the z1 it would explain the lower performance compared to other tests.
z1 extreme!
Hi, possible you got a Z1 and not a Z1 extreme?
Why don’t you perform some synthetic benchmarks and compare them to other rog ally benchmarks and check you don’t have a duff unit. Worth a shot
I'll tell you why the deck is out performing the Ally it's the chip set unlike the deck the Z-1 and Z-1 extreme maybe more powerful however weren't made specifically for the Ally, the decks custom APU was made and optimized to run at lower wattages specifically for the deck if the Z-1 and Z-1 extreme were made optimized for the Ally that would be an entirely different ball game I can't remember who's video I watched but went over this very topic doing the same thing your doing
I remember the name of the video in question, why the ROG ally can't beat the steam deck by high yield this dude can explain it better then I could in more detail definitely an interesting watch
It was Dave Lee also known as Dave2D

That and Steam OS 3 was built for the steam deck. The windows devices (ROG ally, MSI Claw) have to bolt on software/UI to windows
Which model of the ally is this?
Wait, are you testing the ROG ally at 1080p 500nits vs. steamdeck 800p 400nits?
The Deck rekindled my love for tinkering on a PC. Ever since I was able to build a high end PC, I find it weirdly less fun compared to when I had an entry level PC. On my older PC builds, I had to do a lot to get games to run stable. But now, since to can pretty much run anything at max settings, it’s not as involved or fun. The Steam Deck gave that back to me, and in a cool form factor.
Edit: I really didn't mean to come off in like a braggy way. Sorry if I look like a douche lol. I worked hard for the money. :)
wish i had that problem lol
Suffering from success
Same here, I grew up playing tf2 and skyrim on a laptop with pre-Intel HD graphics (think like 640x480 resolution with 25fps). I was gonna buy a low-end laptop to live out some of that childhood nostalgia but handheld devices like the Steam Deck arrived just in time 😅
BRO that was literally me! When I was younger, I trying to find ways to play simple games like minecraft at 30fps. I had more fun playing single player games too. Nowadays, I get bored playing single player games. Now, I only play when I have friends to play with. Thats why Im hoping getting a steam deck will rekindle my passion for playing games, especially single players
Haha, same here :D

Elden ring ran horribly on launch on EVERYTHING except the steam deck. The steam dev team did a great job tailoring eldenring to run immaculately on the steam deck on launch. It was even lauded as THE BEST way to experience elden ring release week.
Elden Ring on launch had shader compilation stutter which Valve was able to avoid by simply distribution a shader cache (like they do for all games).
The frametime spikes were small enough to not be noticeable on a VRR display, so while they existed on my desktop I never noticed them. I certainly didn't think playing it 720p and 30fps on my deck (remember this was before the refresh rate switching) was a better experience than 4k and pretty much 60 on my desktop
@MechanicalMonk I'm not the one that wrote the articles or lauded it as such. I'm just merely stating that MOST people had issues on release, I wasn't one of them & I'm in the same boat as you, but that doesn't diminish the fact that most people aren't technologically savvy enough to tweak windows setting & game files to achieve 4k 60fps on launch. So I'm just pointing out that steams decks integration team got a HUGE PR boost because elden ring ran well on the steam deck at launch. So whether they did much of anything is mute, the point being is the PR and user satisfaction with the device started off well due to it being a fantastic way to experience the biggest new game at the time.
@MechanicalMonk and let's not mention the obvious visuals downgrade due to all the complaints. It got review bombed first week so hard that fromsoft released an apology for performance. I remember bc I ran the game just fine on a 3090 and an i9 11gen, so i was livid when they removed a bunch of graphical features temporarily. It ran so poorly they took out dynamic weather effects completely, they removed volumetric fog completely, and disabled dof. They turned all of these off for about a week to fix performance issues. It wasn't just a shader issue.
Run great on my ps5.

Depends which bios you’re running as well as other optimization but beyond that the Ally with that screen, running, windows, with not a custom chip for handheld consoles.
It’s going to need some community support but it will be better for higher end games at some point imo. The deck is ducking magic nowadays and the Ally has such a brutal experience so far lol. I run into bugs every time I use it lol. I installed SF6 on both and it just ran great on deck where Ally needed help. Diablo iv was the same way.

I got the steam deck with the bad fan and it's not that bad when locking the fps at 40fps in AAA games and in indie games it's good
Don’t forget to change how much storage your GPU gets. I set mine to 8GB from 4GB which does help a bit.
the Ally is a mess though. I have invested money and time learning my deck, will keep it for sure.
Sure you can keep crying with ur steamdeck because this guy haven’t updated the firmware to the latest one
It's not perfect the rog Ally, but it's an awesome pc handheld of the games I played on it.
@@whoareyou3781 🤡
General consensus I'm getting is that the Ally is a poor man's Steam Deck, despite being more expensive. The Steam Deck has had a year to iron out the bugs, but it never had the apparently awful build quality of the Ally.

You're the one coping after the abysmal performance from the Ally in this video 💀
And it has Steam OS and software made specifically for it. Not some utilities bolted onto Windows by ASUS (or MSI with the MSI Claw). Neither of those companies make very good software.
hey Alex, what's your actual favorite handeld?
I have different ones for different things, but all around these days the oled steam deck
Does the steam deck's performance improve when it's plugged in?
Between the defective bumper and complaints of sticky buttons, I think Imma steer clear of this one.
Wow I prefer the colors on the steam deck screen. At least for me
Is this the latest ally firmware?
Man, u just saved me 699, lol, I was just gonna grab one of these, but my deck has been working fine, but I see other people have been just playing the rog plugged in all the time. I subscribed also, I love the honest review.
Great video, I have been wanting to see a "real life" comparison. More power and performance is likely due to how heavy Windows is. Linux uses such little resources compared with Windows. One of the (many) reasons I will never put Windows on my Steam Deck. If you just turned them both on and set them side by side without playing anything the Ally will eat away at that battery. Makes me wonder if one were to install one of the debloated windows ISOs, a) if its even possible and b) would it improve battery/performance.
Dave2d posted an update review. It turns out ASUS shipped unoptimized BIOS, later updates fixed performance issues. But from 15W going down Steam Deck beats the competition.
@@GwarzonicusYeah I got a BIOS update when I unboxed it and it’s good so far.
I don't think so. I have Steam Deck with Windows dual boot, and battery life seems to be very similar.
Performance and battery life is basically identical between WIndows and SteamOS on my Steam Deck with SteamOS and WIndows dualboot.
Just seeing that this is a possibility at 700 for a possible defective Ally made me change my mind.
Same here...
same thing can happen with a steam deck

Have you updated the bios in Ally? Also are you running Steam Deck with built in FSR/RSR?
I get nearly twice fps in some games and about 50% more in majority
Even before the update the Ally out performed the Deck on turbo mode

This is why when it comes to hadrware like these, you should always wait at least half a year or a full year. The firmware and software will performs much better overall. Just like the steam deck. For those who plans to buy the Ally, just wait a year. The price will be lower and firmware will be more stable.
Till there u lost half year of gaming experience and year of fun, they will fix ofc the bad points like just STEAM DECK DID WHEN IT COME OUT.
For now is just system issues not lile stean deck with wrong parts material defect's
@@EmergaStrike 1) spelling sir. please. 2) commenting "wrong parts & material defects" about the steamdeck under a video with an rog ally with a literal material defect (his L1 button doesn't work + his A button got stuck) is insane.
@@h.serafin1489I don't believe that it's genuine to insult his spelling when your grammar isn't perfect either. This is a comment section of RUclips. Does it matter? Second, he makes an important point. We buy these things to have fun. Why would we waste half a year looking for the perfect solution that doesn't exist?
@@arlemoine good thing i said spelling and not grammar then, huh? I also didn't refute his point about losing time whatsoever so.....don't know where you were going with that. Doesn't pertain to me.
I simply pointed out that him saying that the steam deck had "wrong parts" & "material defects" is once again, insane; as the video he's commenting under shows an rog ally with those exact problems.
@@h.serafin1489 I never said you refuted his point about lost time - I was only reemphasizing it because it is often an argument to say to wait around. So, how does his spelling hurt you?
My understanding is that at lower settings the deck is undefeated monster. The Ally does better at higher settings but not by a large margin. The steam deck also has a lot of compatibility patches and a strong/growing community behind it
it is a pretty large margin
@@dennonwrench2427 really? Most of the reviews I’ve seen have stated otherwise. But I’ll be happy if there is a way for the Ally to be better optimized
@@Dhern094 i mean its running at 1080 better than the steam deck is at 720. thats a pretty solid jump. most the stuff ive seen say the rog ally at max wattage blows the steamdeck out of the water
@@dennonwrench2427but it should. That's like basic maths. Why are people shocked that 25/30 watts runs better than a 10/15 watt device
If you guys own a steam deck and look in the description of certain games, some games are literally optimized to reduce power usage and run better on steam deck. Thats why the deck gets a higher FPS on certain games. Saw another comparison video explaining this for games like Resident Evil 4 Remake where the Steamdeck had a more consistent 30-40 FPS on the same settings as the ROG.
are there any videos reviewing the z1 not the z1 extreme not that I wouldn't spend the extra 100 but I want to know how the z1 compares to the like of the steam deck ayaneo 2 and onexplayer 2 or even to the amd 680m
z1 isn't out yet, i think it comes out in september
I don't know if this is your device, or if I just wasn't looking at your settings hard enough. I tested a couple of those same games, and cannot recreate your low performance. I also did notice in No Man's Sky you were running borderless instead of fullscreen which may affect things. I also didn't set what mode you had the screen refresh rate set to, if it was anything but 120, you aren't using VRR.
You should test Witcher 3 if you have it, it's a game that will definitely use whatever performance is available. When I play on deck, at low settings, fsr balanced, I'll get 35-55fps. On the ally, at 1080p (so significantly higher res), low settings, fsr balanced, on turbo mode, I get over 50-65 fps.
Same here I’m playing d4 on medium 1080p 80 fps in turbo with ris on
I get 60fps locked on Witcher with fsr and low settings on steam deck
This is bizarre, doesn't line up with any other comparison I've seen of the two devices.
agreed, i'm wondering if i got a bad unit?
They say it may be due to it not being plugged in for optimal performance
Really happy to see Linux gaming is moving forward. Steam Deck is awesome, and the reason it wins over ROG Ally is the perfect match of software (SteamOS) and hardware.
Windows cannot keep up with the power and customizability of Linux.
Amen, friend!
Until you run into emulation with gamecube which struggles Linux holds it back you install Windows and it fixes emulation that's the reason I got the Ally I still have my steam deck so for the games that it can play it works okay but for all the other games I go to the Ally but if somebody wanted to play all games in general I would say just skip the steam deck until they fix all the problems with easy anti-cheat
@@Ziyoblader I agree, hopefully one day Linux would be first citizen in the gaming industry
What do you all think of the steamdeck's screen so far?
I live in a country where it's at the moment not sold officially and idk if I should try to buy it used/overseas or wait for a revised version of the steamdeck with (hopefully) better screen or minor updates. I do value good screens a lot (as in reduction of ghosting/blurring and good black levels)
Steam Deck's screen is pretty bad and it's probably the main thing that is making me look to getting an Ally, even more than the better compatibility of Windows vs Steam OS. Reasons why it is bad:
-it uses pulse width modulation to control the brightness and at a low enough frequency that anyone that may be sensitive to this will get eye strain and headaches if the brightness isn't at 100%. Also can't run it at 40Hz because it's there too regardless of brightness. I didn't even know I was sensitive to pwm until I got my Deck and started to get a headache within 15 minutes and did research. What iI do now is I have the brightness at 100% and then adjust things with the Vibrant Deck plugin to lower the actual brightness I see by tweaking the rgb gamma values it has. I have them at 40-45-ish.
-its sRGB gamut coverage is horrible, something like 68%. Colours look pretty washed out which is something you can see in some of this video
-its contrast ratio is pretty mediocre and something you can easily see in this video.
-it comes with a way too high colour temperature/white balance set at just under 8000K so things are too blue and it's not easy to calibrate or accurately adjust this
-it has a bit higher response time so there is more blur with movement than there should be
-its touch screen performance is so laggy and is garbage
All in all, they skimped on the screen which was a very silly move on their part. They could have put in a half decent screen, increased the price by 50 bucks and nobody would have complained. Instead, they went this route skimping on arguably the most important part of it given it's what you look at and if you look around, you'll see it is the main hardware thing people complain about regarding the Deck and an almost universal opinion of how bad the screen is when people finally compare it to something with a decent screen like the Ally.
It's probably not the worst screen I have experienced in a laptop or mobile device but it isn't too far off and had I known it was this poor, I wouldn't have got the Steam Deck. I kind of discounted the few who were really bashing the screen when I was researching the Deck close to a year ago before ordering. I should have listened to them and not the people that acted like the screen was still pretty good.
Given what you said and what you want, I would NOT recommend the Deck at this time. Either wait for the Deck 2 or see if the Ally will light a fire under Valve and get them to change the screen on future Deck production.

Bad monitors absolutely makes me tired. I have a high refresh rate TN-panel I bought when I used to play csgo and I only like it when I am in fact playing csgo. For everything else it's exhausting.
Brightness is something I've always kept at a minimum as it makes my eyes tired too.
Most of the games I play would be perfect for Steam Deck as I love indie-games, 2-d games and such. I also love the idea of calming myself down with something like Stardew Valley or jsut take short breaks and play 30 min every here and there. I'm tired of sitting in my room and I also get tired of gaming long sessions so Steamdeck really would be perfect ): ..
