  • Social media is commonly maligned because of its potential negative impacts on mental and social health. In this talk, youth activist and seasoned public speaker Eva Amin argues that social media in and of itself is not the problem. In fact, social media can support personal fulfillment and professional success - if used judiciously. Eva presents guidelines every kid and teen should be taught from an early age to help them leverage social media as a helpful resource and avoid allowing it to be a destructive force. Eva, a senior in high school, has been a public speaker since the 4th grade. She recently ranked 11th in the nation for public speaking with the Future Business Leaders of America. She loves public speaking because of the platform it gives her for inspiring others. In her talks and in her daily life, she challenges others to look at things from a fresh perspective and to question the status quo. Eva is especially passionate about amplifying the voices of women and youth. She hosts a podcast called Venom, in which she interviews women in power positions with the goal of inspiring young women to break through barriers. In her TED talk, she will be speaking about why we should teach kids and teens to use social media as a helpful resource instead of allowing it to be a destructive force. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The term social media is almost a contradiction. We dont really socialize on these platforms. We just create and enter echochambers and disassociative interests groups.

Don't ever let go of the advice of your elders, even if you don't agree with them. If it bugs you put a stop to whatever conversation you were having with them but always remember to take their words to heart. You'll have time to think about it, do your research, and see what exactly their frustration is about. Their worries. We did not all grow up with cell phones and internet was hardly available. If you have a History major, Psychology, Sociology majors., my hat goes off to you. If you took Construction Management at any level we don't have to worry too much about social media because we are always on a roll and every 8 hours of sleep counts. Feeling tired and weary can come as a blessing.
Do not forsake old parents' teachings. We do care for you believe it or not. I may dare say: we even love you

This viewpoint is definitely unique and falls right in the middle, I'd say. One positive takeaway from this video is the emphasis on removing negativity and embracing positivity to empower oneself. ✨👍
I have to agree that celebrities can sometimes come across as fake due to excessive advertising, which can lead to unnecessary desires for purchases. It's refreshing to see a different perspective that challenges the notion of needing celebrities.

In my opinion, the only social media that is worth doing it is RUclips. Even if you follow the people that "inspire" you the content on other websites are too shallow to have any value. That's why I only use RUclips, the rest is the rest.

Eva spoke really eloquently and clearly. I really respect her delivery and message. However, I have to point out a crucial point of concern with the four categories she mentioned: entertainment. I personally find it difficult to regulate how many entertaining videos I watch on social media, whether it be RUclips, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Those reels, shorts, etc. become more and more amusing due to the algorithm behind them. Our minds naturally gear towards those entertaining videos, without thinking about how much time we're spending watching them. We think, "Oh I'll just watch one more funny cat video... or maybe one more... or two more." And we end up losing ourselves. Idealistically, yes - we should regulate ourselves and control how much time we spend watching those videos. But in reality, I have little faith that most people can actually control how much they spend on social media. The mindless scrolling is real. Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I have decided to drastically reduce my social media.

It’s not social media’s fault that people’s lives are screwed up nowadays! Just like with alcoholic beverages, we have to be responsible for the amount of time we spend with technology (probably mainly time online)! If you’re addicted to technology as opposed to fiddling with it in moderation, you have a brain health problem. For now, I suggest a membership with HAPPYneuron or Lumosity. If I can think of more ideas, I will share them here and wherever else applicable!
