- Blind bid at Dealer Used Car Auction goes bad. Car Flip Fail?
I buy 2 old used cars from dealer car auction to flip for profit. A Skoda Fabia and Fiat 500. But as used car auction buys go things are not plain sailing.
Flipping used car for profit and being a used car dealer is not as easy as it may seem. Авто/Мото
I test drove a '12 Ka from a private seller a couple of weeks back, looking for a runaround for my eldest. Its been a while since I'd heard such a noisy gearbox; from cold, 1st, 2nd and 3rd all sounded like someone was grinding coffee beans somewhere under the transmission tunnel. It eased a bit when warm but was still definitely a no sale. Pulled up and explained why to the seller (also mentioned that its likely to be the input shaft bearings, as it was all the way back to this box's origins in the '93' Punto) and that I'd recon it or get a scrappy one in before sale. Of course he tried to say that they were all like that, and they do admittedly lack synchro on 1st on these, but this was beyond acceptable.
Hi James, just want to say a huge Thankyou for all your content. I’ve been doing car sales on the side of my main job as a mechanic and after much thought over the last couple of years it’s you and your videos that’s helped me to take the push and I gave my work 4 weeks notice yesterday!! Exiting times.
Thankyou for inspiring me from your kind, outgoing and informative aspect etc you show to what the trade is really like.
By the way I’m only in Holsworthy small world huh!
All the best
Congrats Wayne!! My vids not enough to put you off lol!! Driveway trading or did you get a Unit? You are a big step ahead being a mechanic! All the best of luck, remember you need to take rough with smooth not everything is a win. When its going wrong know when to bail and move on
@@ChopsGarage I have a small 1car workshop and a lot of concrete yard already (on a farm that I’d never be able to fill.
As you say I have the advantage of my trade skills and already have the tools. At the moment I’m doing the slightly lower end of the market. Need to start looking into the bca jroute though as currently constantly searching all the sales platforms locally. I struggle to see how the majority cars on there you can make money on though as they sell so high and by the time you get them delivered etc there’s such a small margin?!
Hi James hope you and the family have had a good weekend and are staying safe and well
Great content James, thank you. Not being able to sit live during the auctions and upping your initial bids is no bad thing. Buying at the right price is key to your profit. 👍
Very true
Always enjoy all your videos James - top notch stuff.
Thanks Trevor
Really enjoy your longer videos and hope you are able to bid and win some more cars soon as you have sold quite a few recently
Really enjoyed this video thanks for all your time and effort you put into your content
Thanks Glen!
Love your passion. 👍
But, great channel and genuine fella, buyers will have not have any problems with you as you're straight, and it's the only way to be👍
Bearings in the gearbox are made of chocolate on the 500s!! I usually get them reconditioned as it's about the same price as a secondhand box and you never know what condition a secondhand box will be in. Fabia looks a good result and will offset the spend on the 500 👍
Yes do go allot
Really interesting as usual great to watch.
Cheers John
Wet vac the Skodas seats ,service and Mot and that’s a cracking Fabia and I love that colour
Me too, that colour is very similar to the Miura P400S in the Bertone collection at Malpensa airport.
Hope you can find a new unit soon
Didnt expect a new video today erm if anyone thinks selling cars is easy money your channel is a reality check enyoyable to follow as per usual James thumbs up from me
Cheers buddy
Yes let’s hope you can two the two cars around quickly and make a good profit on them
I put the interior heater metrix on full heat but low fan because the electric water pump packed in on this Skoda Octavia that's sufficient to stop overheating even on motorways, good idea if heat is coming through and you want to take it away from the engine.
Yes that works
Great content as always. Bit worried about the i10 salvage as one of the pics showed the wheel was pushed in more and not aligning to the wing. Hopefully it’s some simple bend track rod snd maybe even steering arm that’s all.
Yes I spotted that but all bolt on stuff under there
Another good video James I would go 2nd hand gearbox with the 500! Skoda looks ok finding some history would be nice 🤔
Cheers David
Good luck---lets hope you win a few
Orange was a risky colour to buy . Nightmare to match and punters have to want that colour. Good luck as the Fabia seems a good car
Great video good to keep 1 to 2 projects on each video. The i10 looks like it has a little damage on around the driver side fog light
Yes will be interesting to see whats what when it arrives
Just stumbled upon your channel, great content, wondering when the next installment is coming out now 🤔 !
Tonight bud! Many thanks
I do like the pick up videos. Thanks.
Sorry there was missed footage of first 500 drive and Fabia walk around
Loooove the colour of the Fabia
Its buffed up amazing
Problem with cat cars if you are the younger or inexperienced driver is that the insurance company loads the premium, and as the insurance is already high then it can be the deal breaker.
Very true
Thanks James top vid
Cheers buddy
Great video again
Great video
I enjoy the repar side nit the copart stuff sell very genuine cars I just love to see this if you where based in staffordshire I would pur hase of you has I can see what a great guy you are very genuine love it
Phil in stoke
Thanks 👍
Enjoyed this thanks, I've got a qashqai acenta, don't know what it means either but it's got a satnav
Lol, yes the Nissan of that name seem to, many thanks!
My sister got a Fiat 500 , 5 years old from a second hand dealer £3200 , the clutch and gear box went within 8 months of her getting it !!! It’s put me off this car !
Wheel can end up taking a lot of force and wing very little making it look a light accident when it isn't and light cars get pushed when hit so only take so much force before sliding.
True
Good one James try focusing on 1-2 jobs per video
That way you’ll have more videos for the channel 👍
I drove a small Chevrolet courtesy car while my car at the time (2007 Honda Civic 2.2 i-CDTI) was being repaired after somebody drove straight into the side of my car, despite the fact I was parked in a parking bay and not moving. This was 11 years ago, but the courtesy car was awful. They might have improved since then, but I for one would not go near them.
You might be right but you are comparing a top quality Japanese motor with a poor to low standard Korean basic runaround big difference in price at the lower budget you need to lower your expectations for just a basic motor the Chevy seems like a cheap reliable motor to me
Not as refined as a Honda but if you are on a budget they are great value
Think the Fabia is a car that passes under the radar for a lot of people but they really are an excellent little car.
Agreed
I get anything James recent good deals have been alfa spider, freelander, a few zafiras (7 seats always good) astra, a 2.5 v6 freelander auto petrol! Very popular mate.
I need more space mate to mix it up
@@ChopsGarage I'm absolutely packed with all sorts, I buy bikes when they come thru, repos, bought one recently 70 miles one it, 1 year old, took all of 10 mins to sell and easy storage.
Feel your pain with a long drive in that Skoda...had one as a courtesy car for a week, most gutless thing I'd driven since my first mini over 30 years ago! But being VAG probably a good bet especially at that mileage, maybe owned by a more mature driver who's hung up their gloves rather than something more cynical? Though i'd probanly be thinking the same 😂
Well news coming on that soon bud!
Really enjoying your channel. Its nice seeing an honest dealer at this end of the market.
I'm interested to know what you make on each car after overheads, rent, etc, are included? The £500 you aim make to is surely closer to £300 if you include those?
No thats sub those costs. I did a big video on it a while back if you check the channel bud, think its titled something like "I made 28k"
Another great video
Glad you enjoyed it
I buy in northern counties and sell in the SE make a grand + clear profit each time old folks cars best low miles and service history.
Expensive transport for me
@@ChopsGarage we trailer them down or drive them so just cost of railfare.
Bearings on 500s. Swift’s. Altos can be terrible
Great stuff been watching for a while. Someone new to the game i dont have as much technical expertise as you and no relations with local mechanics so i tend to shop around for work but can work out a bit expensive.. How are you finding auction prices seems like everything goes above cap?
Well above buddy, you need to grab the bodywork problem cars and get rattle canning as they go far cheaper
Where would you put all the cars if all you bid on you won ? Got to speculate to accumulate tho haven't you . Good video 👍👍
Looking good still following here
Cheers
Another good video
Cheers bud
With a bit of luck it could just be a bent wishbone or steering tie rod. Fingers crossed!
Box buddy
@@ChopsGarage I meant the i10 structural write off.
Be careful of those cat S that Don't look to bad. Someone may have done a few bits to cover up how bad the damage is. You'll need that front bumper wing off to check.
Yep not my first rodeo bud been there
And yes here is 12,000 subscribers and don’t think it will take you to long to reach 12,000 subscribers
Excellent cars the old Fabias, mine is '05 with 165K on the clock, had it for 13 years. Original clutch, original exhaust, runs as sweet as the day I bought it.👍
You must care for it well
Hey buddy love your vids and long time subscriber. I decided on having a go at flipping cars and bought a hyundai i10 1.2 84k miles on a 12 plate from copart. It was supposed to only have bodywork issues but when it arrived it had no oil in and the engine was knocking like mad and cutting out. I have ordered a full service kit with spark plugs. Any advice would be really helpful. 👍
Hi Paul. I have never had an issue with an i10 engine. If it had no oil then the bearings are likely shot and it may well been an insurance scam. I would not do the service and stick its straight back in auction. If you are handy though maybe try and bag a super cheap engine and do a swap. You need to jot all down likely cost versus loss on taking a hit and that will decide the way forward. We all get it mate sometimes just have to move on. Just found the black i10 has duff gearbox and might need to refund the customer
Don't get involved in trades you are not experienced in.
It's a linkage problem not the gearbox.
no it was gearbox
I think you may have paid over the top for the fiat, especially as it's a grade 4, they are booking out retail grade 1 for 2 to 2500 for that year, for £2995 I would be looking at at least a 2014, mind you the auctions are getting overpriced rejects going through, with we buy any car and cinch taking the best for resale
2995? I did not pay anywhere near that. A 2014 car retails at 4k plus
And Cinch are not getting the best cars as they are not selling older than 5yrs
What was the pup?!
Why go for volume rather than a bigger profit? Just curious really.
The i10 salvage, or it was already a CAT S? Is that possible?
It is but they normally go through normal auction
What was the issue with the 500 in the end?
Vid coming out soon
Get a 2nd hand box James, they don't want to give you more for the car.
Will do bud
@@ChopsGarage you need to get mean! Should be same as punto so loads about, 80quid,if it needs a clutch try a recon one, I get them and there 35 quid
Don’t take the insurance categories as gospel! I have bought a category N before which was structurally damaged & likewise I have bought a category S which I paid for and drove home ! the way they categorise them is very random As I remember generally the insurance assessor does not crawl around underneath and have a good look at them it is all done upon the estimate value by the garage, If I was able to drive a category S car 90 miles home what does that tell you!!?
Yes been there mat, Cat N with bent chassis leg, Cat S with no damage other than a small bolt pulled from inner skin
What was the pup then
Hi James 🙏🙏
Hi bud
Fabia looked alright, it'll be a nice little car once prepped.
You'd be surprised as to what insurance companies want repairing rather than renew! I think that i10 will have suspension damage mate, wheel looked back into the arch a touch, and the S+D... just.. on the rear window too, no airbags off? So can't be too bad. Looking forward to the next one 👍
Yes I thought wheel looked little off
james would you get cars to order ?
No sorry, pitfalls all over in that model as far as I can see. Often asked
instead of bidding on corsa's try getting a new vauxhall viva, they are cracking little cars and far more reliable
But surely mechanics are all the same
@@ChopsGarage Nope, the viva is actually the updated chevy spark but in the uk they had to sell it as a vauxhall, they use the same 1L 3 cylinder chevy spark engine, really decent cars that are over looked, great 1st cars
@@thedeadstig123 oh top tip cheers bud
@@ChopsGarage Ive read a few reports on early clutch failure on the Korean Viva but that might be right up your street if the price is right
I have a late 2015 fabia, and it is an excellent reliable, economical and spacious car for the money. Possibly better than the polo equivelant.
Id say so
James, would it be too cheeky to ask if you could show us what slightly more money would get you at auction? Maybe something at £5k, thanks.
We can take a look bud, going to do a vid on prices at auction soon anyhow
@@ChopsGarage Excellent, I look forward to that.
Love the vids mate that Skoda had non warranted mileage what does that mean. Could it have done more mileage then the clocks say
It either means the mileage is wrong or the seller doesn’t know for sure that it’s correct and is protecting themselves, or they have a policy of not warranting any mileage as correct. Without solid history, buying a non warranted and selling it as genuine mileage is very risky. A famous motoring journalist was prosecuted for exactly this some years ago. It has got easier to look at MOT histories on line and see if the mileage is obviously wrong, but in the past a fair proportion of cars had incorrect mileages.
No sure they warranty any miles to give them a get out clause
Please put the seat belt on🥴, driving round that yard full of cars, something lurches out, and smack🙄, start doing it as younger drivers watching you could get bad habits.
Spray some wd40 on ur belt and tensioner if it goes then u know its that
Doesnt WD40 eat rubber giving it a greater chance ofbelt breaking?
@@mohitl1697 not really it's a temporary measure if the noise goes then you know it's that to change?
The noise will disappear itself it’s an auction car and all the police are generally rusty where the car has been sitting around five minutes after running and the noise is gone !! I have seen it too many times
Activate Windows... 🤣.
Do you realise that Trade Plates don't cover MOT now. The car needs to be MOT'd to drive with trade plates on.
Yes
55,000 Low mileage??? You sure
For 2012, hell yes I am!
a pair of £300 cars any more than that they saw you coming as bca gets stock from we buy any car so most are scrappers before you see them
Are you ok? I'm not sure
Let me guess.... Brake bulb out 🤔😂
Lol no, dirt on gearstick
@@ChopsGarage 😊
I'll be watching shortly 👍
U could get "general rule" printed on t-shirts u would make a fortune
Do I say it allot
Fiat = fix it again tomorrow
No other makes need more work
I love the content but I worry about your business model. Surely you'd be better off getting the cars delivered by BCA etc. You seem to spend so much wasted time on driving the car back. Imho you need to concentrate on sales due to your low margins.
Be £300 mate vs £140
Plus of course missed content that generates revenue
....but it will take you at least one hour each way plus time spent messing around so say 3 hours. Difference is £160 so can you generate more than £50 profit per hour spent on other things at the garage?
Well I would also have to wait up to another couple of days to get the car as he has a single trailer so potential lost say easily outweighs the lost couple hours. I can only get so many sales in a month getting cars as fast as possible to unit is key to turnover
please stop with the clickbait.
So it's not a pup with a duff gearbox? How bad does it need to be?
@@ChopsGarage You said it yourself, you bought without a report. It turning out to have an issue doesn't make it a pup. Something being in a much worse state than advertised makes it a pup.
Not to mention it featured for all of about 5 seconds in a ~25minute video, and that was only you talking about it, not actually the issue.
Are you saying that if the title was something like ' I've Bought a Fiat 500, Think There's Something Wrong With The Gearbox But I'll Have To Wait Until I Get It Back To Barnstaple To Check It Out' you wouldn't have watched it? Or are you only watching because you want to see someone having serious problems?
@@beerlodge5153 Well done for proving my point. 😂
The truth is we didn't really see either, did we?
@@adamspencer95 even with a report they wouldn't mention a noisy gearbox, I bought a 12 plate corsa, all green on the assured report and was told they don't cover once its driving, recon gearbox, new clutch, 500 quid, ended up loosing 50 quid when I sold it after all that work, so I fully agree with James, imo the auction should do a quick test drive and put an honest report on the screen, they charge enough.
