  • In 1967 the era of the Original Six came to a close when the league doubled in size from six to twelve teams. This first expansion class would open the doors that have led to the 30-team NHL that we know today.
Today we are going to look at the team set up at the Gateway to the West, the St. Louis Blues.

These vids are great.... i don't agree with the playoff system back then....an expansion team was no match for the Habs nor Bruins but it probably helped cement hockey in the St. Louis area..... Not winning 1 game in 3 Stanley Cups made this format look silly however today the Blues have one of the best fanbases in the NHL proving expansion to Missouri was a great decision.

I'm a Leaf fan(I'm 60) but do remember the O'Shea overtime goal that put the Blues past Minnesota in 72. It sticks out because back then, where I live(Halifax,NS,Canada),we didn't see many playoff games featuring teams that had no real fanbase in the area. I think the Leafs had just been eliminated in five by Boston(much closer than people remember) and Montreal had been or were about to be knocked out by the Rangers. Today we of course see a galaxy of games on a galaxy of channels. Very different time. Neat feature and without needless histrionics.

The key event of the Blues third season, 1969-70 was overlooked completely. And it happened before the season began. The exhibition game with the Bruins where Ted Green speared Wayne Maki in the throat, and Maki retaliated by breaking Green's skull. Bowman had high hopes that Maki would add scoring punch to the Blues anemic offense. Maki would have been tremendous playing left wing on a line with either Frank St. Marseille or Red Berenson. A tragic way to begin a season before it even started. It really put a damper on what was still a fine season, and could have been even better.

Very interesting piece on the Blues. Some things got overlooked, such as Red Berenson's 6 goal game, etc. The Monday Night miracle in '86..... I was there!! Most exciting sports event I've ever attended. Anyway.....Let's Go Blues!!!

But in 2019 the Blues had a rematch with Boston and won in 7 games and had the biggest parade in St. Louis History
