  • The so called "Rune of Óðinn" is often said to be a symbol for camouflage, deception and illusion. However, it isn't what it seems to be. And that, in itself, is an illusion, and used by some to create deception for personal gain.

    Arith. Always appreciate your efforts to be as objective as possible. A comment: “Magic” is probably a manifestation of our general ability to affect reality to whatever slight degree by focused visualized intent and belief. So ultimately the efficacy of any magic stave is “at will.” For those with no intent/belief in it, no effect will be achieved, which is the literal manifestation of their belief. They look cool, in any case.

      At this point I'm more interested in those small businesses (usually created by archaeologists or historical reconstructionists) focusing on lesser known (lesser known in pop-culture) images and symbols found in archaeological contexts of the earlier periods of Nordic Iron Age, like those beautiful bracteates and guldgubber, faces of unknown entities etc. Something less iconographic and more "dynamic" if you take my meaning.

    In the spirit work in witchcraft, dealing with sigils include a individual involvement between the witch and a living entity, the spirit. That makes it has a value for the witch but not for others. Gods and goddesses are not the same type of entity, but a individual work with deity is a current practice among modern heathen. Once the problem of sources clarified, it is possible to work with this type of symbole, especially if you feel attracted by them. I say that because I had wright result by working with a system of symbole dated from the XVIIe century.

    Thank you for making these kinds of videos that show how things really are. When I first was going into paganism sifting through information was so hard. I had a friend who tried to guide me and used this symbol claimed it was some viking symbol odins illusionary eye that's supposed to protect me from bad spirits when I'm doing a ritual or some B's. He also said there was a proper way to write the runes or there magic won't work or something wich I also think is B's. I'm glad through my journey I found your channel and wolf the red and ocean keltois channels. Helped me keep my critical thinking skills on and to really look I to things Instead of blindly believing.

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  2 года назад +7

      Thank you very much friend! Indeed, I understand you there. When I took my first steps into paganism (around the age of 14 or 15) there wasn't RUclips yet, although there was internet but I did not have it yet. I used a computer in the school's library which had access to the internet and I started to look for pagan stuff there, including Nordic-related pagan themes. At the time there wasn't much either and most of the information was coming from well-known and well-funded Racial and Hate orginizations, which claimed a lot of things that simply aren't true, but that was the first information I got and it just launched me into all sorts of very bad and biased paths full of prejudice. It was a waste of time and not only I had to relearn everything but it was also a struggle to "rewire" my consciousness and critical thinking. I don't want others to pass through that struggle, because it's not just a waste of time, as it also leads people into certain paths that have severe consequences in people's lives and the way they deal with the world and even how people chose to socialize. I was coming from very violent backgrounds and it just launched me into more and new violence. So I really want to help people in avoiding such struggles and have a far more smooth progression through paganism. I don't know "Wolf the Red" but I will check. Although I know Ocean Keltoi :p and indeed his channel is another very good source of information on this field, in my opinion. I also recommend Jackson Crawford's channel, if you don't know him yet. His field is linguistics and he is an expert in Old Norse language, one of the very best we have these days. It helps. I also recommend "Nordic Animism" channel with Rune Hjarnø Rasmussen. Be well, and thank you very much! Take care!

      Something interesting about Odin is that, (in my opinion) even though it is certainly frustrating the lack of information and evidences, and the lack of clarity on several contexts, perhaps Odin's greatest gift is maintaing the wonder of mystery which leads us to have inspiring moments that pushes us to try to unveil the mystery of the unknown, and we end up learning a lot more than what we assumed it was possible.

Ellis Davidson, although since such sources are a bit old by now I suggest always being aware of the latest studies, especially in terms of archaeology concerning Nordic Iron Age, but her works are still quite relevant in many aspects; Judith Jesch, definitely; Rudolf Simek; Leszek Gardela; Johnni Langer if you can read Portuguese (from Brasil); Hélio Pires (from Portugal); John Lindow, although he focuses a lot more on the myths and even though some interpretations I might not agree with, the great majority of his work is quite good and very useful; Maria Kvilhaug, although I haven't yet explored the totality of her works, but her thesis was enthralling; Jackson Crawford for linguistics as an expert in Old Norse language, one of the best nowadays, in my opinion; Aside from Crawford's RUclips Channel, I also suggest Ocean Keitoi's and Nordic Animism channel with Rune Hjarnø Rasmussen; the webpage of Christie Ward ("The Viking Answer Lady") I found recently. I think these are quite a few you should definitely look at my friend. Hope this helps.

    Thank you for clearing up so much of the ..garbage?...Analysis we receive here in the U.S. We would have vastly different practices and tattoos, me included, if we had work like yours more available. Like Eastern History, much is unknown or lost due to translations, being none existing. I have heard of many Pagan and Icelandic and Greater German stories that are just not translated. The Icelandic Sagas should be as well taught as Greek, but I know Academia has bias, less so after Tolkien's work.

    In your research/experience, do magic staves have to remain consistent with historical practices to retain power or can they retain power and meaning as they change artistically? For example vegvisir as it appears in Icelandic texts vs modern versions of it?

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  2 года назад +1

      In my personal experience, both dealing with archaeological and historical contexts as well as personal traditional folk magic work, symbols are used through time and get different meanings, interpretations as well as new names and even alterations in morphology/iconography. In this way I think it's safe to say that symbols in themselves have little power. What givens them power is how we use them, the contexts in which we apply them and the type of relationship we create with certain symbols by using them as a medium to connect (or create relationship) with entities. Although this symbol I've presented here has no concrete information on how it works, and how to use it and its function, I think it can certainly have new purposes and meanings from the moment we apply them to/in/for something. My presentation here was purely academic from what we actually know from the sources, but it can certainly be used for other purposes in different ages to come. Although I believe it is necessary to truly know the origins of symbols and where they came from and what they were used for, just to have a more accurate perception of symbols and to avoid falling into schemes that take advantage of people's ignorance in any way. But I think it is also important to know such symbols so we can also better conduct our own personal works of magic. In other words, any symbol, rarely remains consistent with historical practice. This is more evident in traditional folk magic ("witchcraft") where several symbols often lose their original meaning or retain some original meanings but new and different meanings (and purposes) are created or added for the sake of achieving the intention/desire/purpose for which they are being used. It's not just a question of religious and cultural syncretism but also adaptability to the circumstances and systems of belief.

      The historical information on the runes is far less than that of their modern esoteric interpretations. Perhaps what would help you are the Icelandic Magic Staves. There are quite a few dealing with protection, many of which against thieves. In fact, the great majority of Icelandic Magic Staves are apotropaic in nature.

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  2 года назад +1

      Hello there! Well, as I said in the video, the Church did not normally denied the existence of the divinities of the religions over which it imposed itself, but instead limiting itself to attributing a demonic nature to them. The summonable range of demons included in the Key of Solomon and transported into the acts of Necromancy within the Church therefore also included ancient pagan deities (ancient pagan deities added as fallen angels and/or demons to the list of demonic entities). This is the reason why Old Norse gods appear in Icelandic Magic Staves. This does not imply that pagan beliefs have survived, on the contrary, it attests to the actual demotion and degeneration of the pagan gods, being equated with demons and fallen angels of another religion - Christianity. This is also noticible in Scandinavian traditional folk magic (Trolldom) of the Modern Age onwards: Old Gods being evoked alongside Judeo-Christian demons, angels, fallen angels, saints and biblical figures, and not understood as pagan gods anymore nor a continuation of any pagan cult to them.
