Thank you
Hi
This car came to me with a few issues...
The idling was really rough, and sometimes would stall, also was no response at all from the accelerator pedal...
On the ecu, faults for the accelerator pedal, a throttle body and some others...
But, was this components at fault?
Follow me on this video to find out what was the problem and how I resolved it...
NOTE: The car was later road tested, and I can happily add that the car drove absolutely fault free... nearly...
It came up with two faults, one for fuel pump, and one for mixture or something along those lines...
They clear, but come back when driving, still, even with this faults, the car drives perfectly... so should be something simple... I hope!
In an attempt to fix the original problem, someone replaced the fuel pump with a third party one, and apparently the fuel rail...
This faults only come up when you drive the car, and I am not sure under which circumstances, as was not me that road tested the car...
I don't believe this issues are related to the repair performed on this video, but who knows... It should be me that is going to have a look at the issue, if I do, I will obviously record it, so stay tuned!

Great job, I've never seen anyone that can do the repairs that you can, it's good to watch. I can hear the happiness in your voice at the end when you got it all working properly. 😀
Absolutely!
Thank you for watching and for your comment, really appreciated!
Awesome repair, plz try to film the entire process, especially when you're doing circuit boards, it's really interesting to watch👍
Will try...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!

How could anyone not watch the whole video ? , from start to finish you had me hooked , what to me seemed like Complete ecU failure , you once again saved ,
i for one is amazed at how you think your way through a problem, and end up with a solution.
You are amazing.and thank you for sharing it with us .
😊
Really appreciated your words!

There is something about your videos that seems hypnotic. You just get glued. Knowledge and attention to details should be the secret.

Thanks!

Thanks for taking us with you on this one, I've often wondered when a sensor is missing its rail volts (5v) why can't you just hack around the problem - clearly you can and it works !
😊
Yes you can...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
I watched the full video ! Congrats to you for not giving up !
Thinking a bmw tech didnt clean the drain is a bit sad tough
👍👍👍
Absolutely...
Not hard to think, that if the water reached that level once, if you don't fix the root cause, will reach it again...🙄
Thank you for watching and for your comment!

Thank you for the kind comment!
Watching you do all these repairs are fantasic, well done and don't be suprised BMW get there trainees to watch your videos.
😊
Wouldn't take it that far... lol
But thank you for watching and for your comment, appreciated!
while I watched I tried to be fully concentrated and more than an hour is really not a short time for that , you must be really so patient to done this car get repaired and also video it to show us , thank you for your efforts ....

Great troubleshooting and repair. Do not worry about the length. Short videos are good because it usually means a fairly simple fix, which is good to know. Long videos are good because it usually means something really interesting happened.
😊
Thanks!

I dont get what the issue. Was besides a software setting
You have clearly skipped many parts of the video... watch again...
👍👍👍
top marks for the amount of patience that you have.I watched all your video and was very impressed on the work you did .I must say I wouldn't have done it myself I would have bought a s/h ECU and coded it. I think i would have saved a lot of time and headaches, because as I said in another video of yours recently if you had not found the fault ,all that work would have been for nothing and its not worth the risk, because you could have done more cars in the mean time.
Agree...
This this a part time for me... I am in no rush when doing this...
But totally understand your point...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Hi I love the way you persevere and repair rather than swap parts. I would have liked to see how you repaired the board even though I don't think I could do it. Your a star

Thanks... I will try to show more next time...

Thx Luis! I missed this long well explained videos. Very well done. I wish you marry xmas and happy new year if you don't make another video this year.
More to come out this year... no worries...

Another mystery solved by Sherlock Holmes. Watched to the end, thanks for your effort and sharing. Great resilience in not giving up and just ordering another ecu. Cable driven throttle bodies were so much more simpler. Sigh
Those days are gone... everything is electric nowadays...lol
Thank you so much for watching and for your comment!

Hello luis how are you?, great job, thanks for the information , but i want to know how you get the 4.8 volts first time when the car stay misfiring?
great video once again weve all made mistakes i often reverse engineer some boards and end up redrawing stuff due to mistakes not easy when doing surface mount stuff and tracks pop up all over the place often under ics or plugs nice to see we have similar equipment my work desk is cluttered also have loads of stuff around me leads and more leads probes etc ha ha a constant learning curve thanks for sharing

Welldone sir .. very tricky job ..had a question how to know ECU components are good or bad .. Hopes u explain or any link provided b appriciated thanking u lot to giving good knowledge
Watched with so much excitnent although its a hour long ...great finally you did it as always
Yes... was a bit too long...🤪
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Enjoyed your video. Interesting fault finding approach. I admired your tenacity & approach in repairing this car I've got an 07 model with several issues similar to the one you worked on. On my one I think the ECU & the auto transmission are not communicating properly. I would be interested in your observations.
Scan the car and go from there...
Any communication issues will most likely be logged in one or both modules...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
yes we're really happy too, you worked hard for that, you earned that success.
😊

Nice repair, glad you managed to find the fault and fix it.

Very good as always great patience. I use a 6v test light for checking 5v reference
But you are posh... I am not...😋

Thanks for another great video !
I watched quite a few of you videos. I have exactly the same hobby ... to fix cars that others couldn't... I can hear in your voice at the end whem problem is solved I know the feeling :-)
Mybe one suggestion : when working with fibreglass pen WATCH YOUR EYES ! Those tiny fibres that break could end up in your eye when you blow them off. No doctor coud find it in your eye because it is totaly transparrent. Maybe use glasses.
I also try to fix ecu before I replace it if there is too much damage.
And about the previous comment we all know about "no coding neded for used ecu" :-)
Keep up the great work !
Thanks.

Glad you enjoyed...

Hi thank you for this video. my car has the same problem. Instead of jumping the 5 vols reference in the DME. I am using a phone charger to supply the 5V. Its been working for a year now. I know its a bit cheap, but hey its working.
☺️
👍👍👍
BGrate job mate. I would love to learn from you more ... keep up the good work.
Thanks!
👍👍👍
Superb video as always, would loved to have seen the root cause, the drain beneath the ecu however it proves that when doing a job like that you have to find and fix the main reason of the ecu failure and these things will not happen.
I have other videos showing where the root cause is... stay tuned...😉
Thank you for watching and for your comment, really appreciated!

Great video!, incredible how such minute voltage differences can cause such a big problem

Loads to come...

A sincere greeting from the heart, sir
I am from Algeria, and I am doing the profession of car trouble checking with the help of the fault detection device
I am very impressed with your way of tracking faults and your professionalism
My question to you is that I rely on a scanning device like Launch to determine the circuit in which the malfunction is and the reason is that the circuit is open and it is completed by connecting it to the sensor or any other piece.
Is the method practical or not and thankful
Hi
The scanner, just buy the best you can afford!
Launch, Autel... etc... is up to you to make your research and decide what is best and suitable for the cars you are going to work on...
Hope that help.
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Nice repair again. It would be good if you can describe a bit the liquids you use to do the clean up. I suppose the big bottle is alcohol right? and the little pen?

If they still work... lol but you get the picture...

Wow genius!! Thank you fir all those ideas, thank you for sharing.. same problem on my 07 328i, git me a used earlier version of the pedal.. im gonna work on it the same step by step and look into that ecu! Thank you sir

Great video LM! That ECU looked like it had been sat in a water puddle for months, IA is not gonna fix that, too many components would have shorted out. Sone of those MOSFETS are very sensitive. Wouldn't trust that on my engine even if you did get it working again. Nice try though and just shows how you go that extra mile for the customer.
The car still going with this repair... so, I would say was quite a successful attempt...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Yes I watched the whole video because I have the same problem on a Ford Focus 2010
I'm not sure what I'm doing but going to have a go!
Thank you for posting this blog
Hope you get it sorted!

@@LMAutoRepairs I've a P0445 code!
I certainly don't want to break the car, without having a go!
Check air intake system... including purge valve... etc...

I watched all the video and felt that your knowledge about the way the ECU is wired and connected gave you that ability to test the PCB with wire-links between components and clean it up, that only those who have an understanding of PCB circuitry could use to repair this problem. . My question is have you had software/electronic training and how long did it take you to get to the level of technical knowledge that you have or have you picked it up along the way?
Hi
Just picked it up along the way...
I do this as a part time...
😊
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Golden rule on E90, any engine faults, always check the ECU first as it takes seconds to pull it out the box. It is very common for them to have been swimming in the box. I have swapped alot of DME on E90. You can clone them with KTAG easy enough, and if the eeprom is totally rotten then there is a handy tool called "ISN CAS DME Editor" which lets you change the used scrap yard DME VIN number and CAS code to match your own CAS.
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Always a beaut to watch your videos, yes I watched to the end and yes it's the second time am watching and also yes its an hour plus video, but would prefer watching you work than watch some silly skit videos. Thanks alot once again for sharing.
😊
Appreciated!

I have same issue with my car, put a new used ecu in it, reprogrammed to key and still same issue
Uau, parabéns mais uma vez! Consigo ver horas e horas seguidas.

Thank you for the knowledge but I'm in deep pain and I'm scared of my possible damages I cause about 30mins ago on a bmw 2008 320i sports pack. I ran through a pothole and my car showed the engine sign and stopped putting power to the wheels, It won't even accelerate but it's idling and starting. Would you know the possible effect? Under the car they seem to be no physical damage or oil leak and yes I switched the car off and on a couple of time but it won't change anything.
Scan the car and go from there...
Thank you for watching!
your repair is beyond what a normal garage would do, it must be a great advantage having electric skills and knowledge of ecu's and components for repairing vehicles, and i watched it all great job, cheers
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
👍👍👍
What i normally do to test a throttle is I read the TPS and move the butterfly. Funny I have Toyota corolla with the same problem where the motor is not getting power from the ECU, so I sent in the box. Do you have manuals for clusters, ECU, etc.
No... I don't have nothing like that...

Awesome job mate big thumbs up 👍

Great videos, but how do you get the board loose with that glue on it ?
Just pry it gently... and a lot of patient!
I have a similar issue with my throttle response. After watching your video, I checked the ECM and saw the corrosion. I have no way of checking or fixing it.
Is there any recommended places I can take it, so they can take a look at it and see if they can fix it?

Awesome video and work! What software is that you had on your laptop that you were watching voltages and such with?
That would be ISTA...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs okay, so that's a BMW specific software, correct? So do you have to use a BMW specific cable with it or will any obd2 cable work with it? It seems like a lot of dealer softwares require specific cables.
Hi
Yes, some do require specific tools..
Some others, work just fine with a J2534...
ISTA, works with both, and with a relatively cheap D-Can cable...
👍👍👍
Great effort at repairing this ECU but,
1: You spent a lot of time on it;
2: Did you find every fault ?
I prefer to replace an obviously damaged unit unless the unit is so rare or expensive that the amount of time to repair it is justified.
I'd spend the bulk of the time fixing the root cause - the water leak - and maybe resealing the replacement ECU to reduce the possibility of water ingress causing a similar issue down the track.
Hi
1:Time doesn't bother me...
2:All in the video...
The water gets to the ecu because of the drain under the ecu and fuses box... I got all that cleaned and removed the grommet to prevent it from happening again...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Superb job Louis! Did you clear the drain? ;P
Hi
Of course... couldn't just left it...
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Yep crazy man lasted that long ,enjoyed the video, great job, you didn’t give up,ps how many times do you,I tell people, electrics don’t go well with water,I don’t do any BMW’s,but they seem to suffer the same problems as Renaults, blocked water 💦 drains, cleaning drains is part of my Renault service,so y not BMW’s? Anyway I’m having a rant, great video crazy man, thanks.
Lol
Looks like that "crazy man" is sticking...🤔😜
Thank you for watching and for your comment!
Blocked drains is not a Renault thing. The same way it's not a BMW thing! Fact is that anything that's dependent on drains, is also dependent on maintenance! Which, as we all know, sometimes is missing altogether.
Damn, a couple of weeks ago I had a clogged rain downspout on my house! Loaded with leaves, etc. Fortunately there's no electronics below it. Otherwise would be the same drama! LOL 😂
Hi, GREAT VIDEO coincidence my BMW E90 328i is literally having the same issues you experienced so was very educational! Watched the whole video! I shorted out the plug for accelerator now I have revs back and fault codes go away, I just feel abit intimidated at shorting the ECU board Is this safe to do? I’ve always been told avoid shorts at work and should only be temporary (not a mechanic) appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks
Well... if you can, replace the ecu...
But using a voltage referente for one extra sensor, shouldn't be an issue...
👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairsThanks for the reply!! 🙌 I think I’ll buy some solder and give it a go, Just to clarify this didn’t cause any future issues like burning anything out? With the constant supply
No... it is just a voltage reference supply...
Nothing to do with the mechanics of the engine...
👍👍👍
@@LMAutoRepairs thank you! Your knowledge is appreciated. 🤝
how much did you ended up charging $$$ total the client for this fix? I want to compare it to buying a used ECU module just in case.... thanks.
My repair videos are primarily for learning purposes...
It is a part time for me, most of the time I charge for the parts and consumables... that's it...
So theoretically, my fix was way cheaper than just a replacement ecu... leave alone the programming etc...😊
