A memory. I used to subscribe (around 1980-81) to the English Northern Opera in Leeds and the series ticket was for the first nights of each performance. On one night the lights were still up when people looked around to see what was obviously happening above us. Lord Harwood (the patron) was wheeling Jaqueline du Pre into the royal box and the whole house rose and applauded for several minutes. She waved and beamed a smile which lit up the house.

They are all legends, but Jacqueline du Pre hypnotises me still and I cannot take my eyes or ears off her - the sheer energy, joy, mastery and poetry.
