A little bit of history about this song. The song is about the Lomaloma lagoon and was composed by Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba when he was posted with the commissioner eastern-based at Lomaloma, Vanua Balavu island. His firstborn son Ratu Mara Kapaiwai Uluilakeba was Chief Minister and Prime Minister (after independence) for a long time. Ratu Mara was born in Sawana, Lomaloma and was the focus of this song (in the lyrics: "Apenisa na vuni vuni kakala"), Loto'a is the residence of the Tui Lau (Lyrics: "Loto'a na vanua ni lasa". It is situated in Sawana village and faces the Lomaloma lagoon directly. The island seen in the Video is yanuyanu inside the lagoon. Initially belonged to Mr Hennings (First resident German Consul in Fiji) and then later Ratu Mara. Ratu Mara became Tui Lau in 1963 and made residence at Loto'a in the 1990s until his death in 2003. A reminiscence of Ratu Tevita Uluilakebas love for Lomaloma, and perhaps more so for Ratu Mara's mother (lyrics: e domoni..means love) who is of Tongan, English ancestry (lyrics: ..veimataqali roka - meaning different colors).
@Matavasese . . . .a question please. Do the people at Lomaloma do "Fish Calling" ? An old school friend told me tales of fish in a lake there which come to the surface to be caught by the locals for their food . . ???
I think you are referring to the lake near Mavana village which is on the northern side of Lomaloma. Its has a story behind the ritual for catching fish from that lake. If you google "Traditional Fishing Ritual (Part 3) - Lau Islands, Fiji " you can view the whole ritual on video as posted by Robert Wolfgram. Its shows the whole ritual of how they catch the fish. This video was taken some years back as part of the BBC recordings of rituals in the south pacific. Enjoy.
Lomaloma , i love this song. Can strum my guitar to this song. Beautiful Just love Fijian songs, easy going songs..feels so peaceful. Thank God for Fiji isles.

Damien Schaaf stuck on you
I don't understand what parts tongan
@@Mac-lv7gp Hopefully you've seen the song lyrics already by now, at least I know the second line of the chorus is Tongan.
@@Mac-lv7gp it is Tongan, just mispronounced which lost meaning in both Tongan and Fijian
@@Mac-lv7gp first and second lines of the chorus is taken from the tongan version of the song...."oiaue oiaue si'i ta'ahine, 'ia 'ia 'a hono kakala"
Thanks for this remix,it sort of reveals our in tune with other musics tradition, its just shows how quick we have adapt. Thanks again.
