Colorado 13ers: North Star Mountain Winter Hike Guide: Where is the Summit?
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 15 дек 2024
- North Star Mountain is a ranked 13er in Summit County of Colorado. Aria and I hiked this one in mid April and had some fun trying to find the "true" summit. This is a great winter hike due to lower avalanche risk and danger.

Looks like a great day out with Aria. You have gotten really good with the drone footage. Topo map never lies.
Thanks loving the new one, does worse in winds but so much lighter to carry
Nice hike with Aria. This was good to watch as I love dogs, especially my little 17 YO little girl who I had to say goodbye to exactly a week ago. We too made great memories together.
So sorry for your loss but cherish those memories.
Absolutely stunning scenery bud, this looks gorgeous! Perfect place for solo hiking and some drone shots! 🥾
Been meaning to do this one, great video!
I've found all of your trip reports that I've watched to be informative. It's also nice to see you enjoy your time with the pup. I've had my dog up a couple of 13ers. He's been on plenty of other hikes with me also. He is 10 now and is still going pretty strong, but not like he used to. Enjoy the moments like you did on this hike. Still a great video!
Nothing better than sharing the mountains with your dogs IMO 🐾
Dude who DOESNT appreciate your videos
haters but they just feed the fire to make more videos!
The true summit is definitely the western one ! About 200’ higher. The summit is the highest point before you start descending toward the Wheeler / North Star traverse
Yup, figured that out which I outline in the vid - still curious as to why that point wasn’t surveyed as the official summit though.
@@TheVirtualsherpa I think that the survey just didn't think to check the other summit since when you're up there, it doesn't obviously look higher (and that ridgeline, depending on conditions, can be quite difficult). I've noticed that for a few mountains around the state, where the old "analog" surveys picked something that looks like the summit, but then better technology comes along and shows the summit is actually in a slightly different spot along the same ridgeline. Not quite as extreme, but Buckskin (also in that area) is at least somewhat similar, with the surveyed summit being about 400m from the actual high point. Though I will say, quite hilariously, the current USGS National Map for North Star Mountain puts the summit as the middle bump, instead of either the first "map high point" or the third "LiDAR high point".
Appreciate the insight, thanks
Love these videos, especially the ones near alma since they are so close to my hood!
Awwww Aria is so so cute in the snow! ❤❤
She really had a blast.
Cool shot of Mt. Lincoln, don't see it from that angle on other videos. It's caught in a land dispute, I take it.
Yep unfortunately the same one that’s been going on for decades but this time, looks like it’s closed for good.
The summit is farther along.
I’ve attempted this hike twice in the winter and both times the wind was so bad above 13k that I couldn’t stand. Bad forecasts. Oh well it’ll be there!
Nice hike. That ridge looked a little sketchy. I would call it a summit if it was me. Lol.
Been up Northstar a few times; good winter access peak ... as a You tuber myself I can relate to juggling a dog along and filming! I am sure you know if you used an Insta360 and just stuck it up out of your pack on a tall selfie stick you would get 360 views...in addition having not to hold the go pro out on as you hike. Nice channel...I used to live in Colorado springs and did may of these same peaks often.
Love the 360 but the editing process is an absolute pain in the ass so not sustainable for a longer video/shot and the quality has a long way to go to match the standard shooting. Appreciate the insight and kind words.
@@TheVirtualsherpa agree with you… I manage 3 Go Pros and now one Insta360…. I try and go fast forward through the 360 video, find a couple of shots I can use and them frame them how I want it to look then save 3-4 small video snippets that I weave into the overall video. Was just tryin to think of a way that would relieve you of the pain in holding that GoPro out while hiking… keep doing what you are doing! Nice videos and website info!
Nice job as usual!!!!
Thanks appreciate it 🤘🏽
@@TheVirtualsherpa I always look forward to your videos. They give me ideas for future hikes. Have a good one buddy.
Good video! Thanks for sharing. I never even considered this to be a good and safe winter option. Good to know. I noticed in your video that you were able to filter out a lot of the wind noise. It sure seemed like it anyways. May I ask how you do that? I really struggle with wind screwing up my audio.
For sure - I put a wind muff over the GoPro, you can google them - but basically they are the ones which cover the entire camera. They really really help in getting most, if not all, wind out of the audio without a dedicated wireless or wired mic.
Thank you!!
Too flat for skis or snowboard?
Yeah I would say so - you could make some turns but between lack of snow near the top and the angle of most things, it’s more of a touring day vs a riding day.
