- Today Cool Classics takes a look at the Life and career of Raymond Bailey, best known for his work on the Beverly Hillbillies, playing the Banker Mr. Milburn Drysdale.
You really have to appreciate his determination to make it in Hollywood.
He is also a veteran of World War II, serving in the Merchant Marines. Развлечения
Everyone loved the hillbillies. They all played their characters perfectly. He was a good actor.
The Beverley Hillbillies had the best writers. in my opinion one of the all time best sitcoms.
The writing was genius.
One of the few story arc's that doesn't work for me is when they went to England to Clampett Castle. But got much more interesting when they got back, with Jethro & Ellie playing Robin Hood in Griffin Park.
@@jeffreydevoti7000 Are you sure the "Robin hood" episodes in Griffith park weren't before the episodes in England?. Either way the Robin hood episodes were one of my favorites especially when granny tells a policeman that she is going smoke to smoke some crawdads but first she needed "a little pot".
Amazing how hard these people work before they become actors. I always loved Mrs. Drysdale because she wore matching clothes with her dog.
I loved Milburn Drysdale’s character on the Beverly hillbillies! He was funny, loyalty to Clampits more important their money was hilarious! 😂🙏
He was such a sneaky underhanded self serving asswholes who always had it bite him in the ass every time but you couldn't help but love him in spite of himself.
I liked when he passed out Miss Hathaway revived him by holding money under his nose instead of smelling salts 😅😅😅😅
He was so wonderful in that role of Beverly Hills banker!
He made that show great!
Love him!❤
Him and Nancy Kulp were Comic Gold! I love stories about supporting actors; they make leading "stars" shine brighter!
I love this young man's delivery. He seems to enjoy his script as much as I like hearing him reading it.
Blessings and peace to him.
I really appreciate the kind words! It helps that i only make videos when inspired. Sometimes it is the character, other times it is their life story 😁
@@CoolClassics Well whatever it is you do and how you do it sir you do a tremendous job and listening to your calming voice is very therapeutic for anxiety and so on especially at 2.15am on a cold February morning in UK. The doctors should prescribe you on repeat prescription and it would not be possible to overdose! Haha
Raymond Bailey was the BEST of the highly talented cast . Thanks for sharing this .
Never give up , never say die!!!! What a great actor!!!!
Iconic TV caracter people will never forget. Integral part of the show
And on Veterans Day I see this ! Thank you for your service sir ! 🇺🇸♥️
Bailey also had a good part as a research scientist in The Incredible Shrinking Man.
It takes all of them together to make a great show like the Beverly Hillbillies Raymond was a good part to keep the show going. I still watch the Beverly Hillbillies thanks to RUclips we can watch good TV shows again something that younger people should take a look at because there was very little to know violence and illegal things done
The Beverly Hillbillies the best comedys shows on television.
I still seek dreams, even though I am older now...my dream was retirement, but you don't stop dreaming, in fact, you think harder....
You did a very nice bio on him ; we enjoyed it , thanks!
Thank you so much for these tributes to the actors in "The Beverly Hillbillies." I loved that show when I was a high school freshman in 1962.
Nights watching this show at my grandparents were the best.
Everyone on the show played their part superbly the show was great
An the casting director did an amazing job,an no one but Raymond Bailey could be Mr Drysdale he own it AN WE ALL LOVE HIM
Raymond Bailey was hilarious as the money loving banker, Mr. Drysdale. One of my favorite episodes was where he made a commercial about his bank featuring the Clampetts. The Clampetts were living in pure squalor until Super Banker (Mr. Drysdale in a cape) swooped in and rescued them from their miserable lives. So funny.
I always liked this actor, thank for sharing.
Someday I will go and look for him in some of his earlier movie scenes.
Yes l love these stories. They are often so similar in theme as you said about people not giving up on their hearts desire no matter what. It’s quite impressive Thanks mr cool classics.
My three favorite BH characters (in order) as a kid in the 60s: Granny, Jethro, Milburn Drysdale. Timeless comedy, and screw the critics.
Yeah, I Remember Seeing Him In, 'No Time For Sergeants' & 'Mr. Ed' But He'll Always Be The Quintessential Cheapskate.
Yep there should be more comedic sitcoms. Really U work hard all day n look forward to a little laughter. If you notice they r the ones that become classics. I love Lucy. Frazier. The Golden Girls Reba n many more Mayberry
You have an amazing voice. I appreciate how natural you are in your presentations. I enjoy every video you present about former stars. Thank you.
Thank You! That really means a lot! In my first videos back in December I was really nervous and scared sounding when I talked. But now that I am more relaxed, it feels a lot better. 😁
I love the way you tell a story!
It's so weird. Growing up you think these people lived a storybook life and as I've seen a few of these Cool Classics, that's not how these actors lives turned out at all. I'm furious that so many of them got shafted financially by the studios they worked for for instance. Some had to deny their natural characters. This Cool Classics guy does a good job.
One of the last jobs he did was a Winston tire commercial, allways loved Mr Drysdale
he had already passed away before the Beverly hillbilly movie in the 90''s , he was missed.. would have been nice to get a cameo if he was still around
I agree that the characters were PERFECT.... all of them were excellent which is doubly difficult since their parts were so darn corny!
AND THE WRITERS WERE GREAT TOO.
He was in I want to live , and almost unrecognizable without his Toupe .
Outstanding vid!
Thank you very much through all the research that you do to make these videos for us to be able to appreciate these actors even more
Wonderful. :-)
Yeah!!!...finally found it!!!
Raymond did a twighlight zone too ...was bald
now where's Frank Sutton???....lol, Big Thanks for your research & work again!!
I love that your videos are so well researched.Wonderful!
He was great in everything he did. He was perfect on the "Beverly Hillbillies" but I remember him from a lot more, including a "Twilight Zone" episode when he worked with Wally Cox, whom he would also work with later on the "Hillbillies".
Bailey also performed in numerous television programs of the 1950s, including The Twilight Zone, The Jack Benny Program and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. These are interesting because he didn't wear a hairpiece in these appearances, as in The Beverly Hillbillies.
Wow, great story on Raymond Bailey!
Very inspiring
Thank you so much for giving us some background on this remarkable actor. Did anyone else notice how well Raymond Bailey aged? Was that just good genes or did he have some kind of skin care regiment ?
I was waiting to hear about the history of his hair. In earlier roles, his baldness is evident. But somewhere along the way, he obtained a very convincing hairpiece. I've wondered about that for years.
Love your channel you are awesome and I enjoy every video
Thank you so much!
He was in the start of a "Rifleman" episode. He was the man shot by a sniper. Once in "Gun Smoke". He was a former serviceman who had the then non-existing rank of Staff Sergeant. An USN officer near the start of "The Gallant Hours".
Ironically, Raymond was also the "peace keeper" amid feuds between Buddy Ebsen and Nancy Kulp, while on the set.
Ebsen and Kulp reportedly couldn't stand each other because of different views on politics.
Some would say that Ebsen's dislike for Kulp would eventually lead to Kulp losing a run for political office in Pennsylvania.
My apologies for getting off subject here.
Buddy apologized to Nancy later on for what he did,and she accepted his apology. Nancy was a class act.
@@simonmadi1177 , Buddy reacted to Kulp's campaign claim that her political agenda was "approved" by the cast of the Beverly Hillbillies, which was false.
None of the cast endorsed Kulp for any of her political endeavors, and that's a FACT.
Ebsen, being a Christian man, did apologize in principal, but didn't apologize for his firm belief in conservative values.
@@allan9603 But in the end it wasn't his business to do what he did. Politics and show business should be separate. Respect for your fellow actor comes first.
That's how I feel about it.
@@simonmadi1177 , he had every right to do what he did.
Kulp opened that door, set the repercussions in motion by her false claims.
After the vote count it would not have mattered anyway, Kulp lost the election in a landslide.
Her native Pennsylvania was mostly conservative back in those days, and voters weren't ready for her far-left idealism.
RIP Buddy and Nancy, you made us all smile during a time when smiles were much needed!
@@allan9603 Regardless of what happened between them, they were both fit for their roles. I still watch the show when it's on and still laugh.
Politics aside, the show was and still is a classic.
Baily was good, memorable too. Another fine actress was his "Hillbillies" wife, Harriet MacGibbon.
Sharon Tate played the recurring character, Janet Trego, on The Beverly Hillbillies. She wore a black wig in the role. Janet Trego was a secretary who worked for Milton Drysdale.
Great job! I’m subscribing.
Awesome! Thank you!
Cool one here
One of favorite episodes was of him and that drunken bear. That one and the one he played the the part of the ghost when they were in England and got shot in the rear end with salt rock 😂🤣😆 !!!! Lol. Good times.
Mines was when he was with granny and Elie May and they were being attacked by Indians..( actors of course).
Actors in the past had real life experience. They weren't morons who got lucky and now think they should lecture others on how to live their lives.
He also had a few parts in Perry Mason,
Without a rug.
The true stars of the Hillbillies were Mr. Drysdale, Granny, and Jethro. W/o them the reunion shows were terrible.
Yep, believe that Drysdale loved the Clampetts
We love Millburn ❤
Cool to know he actually had a career in finance.
Hi, i grew up, enjoying the Hillbillies, as well as hogans' heroes, gilligans' island, etc. Mr. Bailey, would have made an excellent man, for Gilligans' islands' Thurston Howell III . ( the rich man, with hollywood wife). Often wonder, if he'd have been cast, in that scripted role. W O W factor x 10.....
Thanks for not wasting time, no UN necessary blah blah blah...
WW II started in 1939. The USA just waited for a while before it joined in.
I would find it interesting to know what actors made month-to-month when they were doing their series, and if they continue to make money personally from the reruns.
Also, what the reruns are worth today if in syndication .
Can you do authur lake from blondie ?
I have lost count in the westerns he played in on T.V. (usually without his toupee).
I believe I remember seeing Raymond Bailey on a set of a forgotten movie, without his toupee. (or an actor that resembled him) Any comments?
Why Cool Classics didn't have a video on Buddy Ebsen?
I liked the TV Mr. Drysdale way better than the movie version of him.
He really had an amazing life. I loved him in the hillbillies, however, I didn't like how they morphed his character into a foolish person in the later episodes. Passing out and being revived with money. I know it was a comedy, it just outlived what made it great.
Ray Bailey having Alzheimer’s is why they made drysdsle so much meaner as the show progressed. Bailey was not a very nice man and as his Alzheimer’s progressed it became increasingly difficult for him to act and remember his lines so it wa a easier just to let him be his natural contentious rude self
My gosh he has been dead a long time since 1980 from Alzheimers. He looked late middle aged when he played Mr. Drysdale. most people in real life who are big penny pinchers are people with money. It took a lot of hard work to get to wear he was and in my opinion he was a lot better man than the one who played Jed. He didn't go around destroying people's political careers out of spite and hate. R.I.P
Kulp never had a political "career", she lost the election by a wide margin, which was her one and only try at politics.
@@allan9603 she lost because he got on the radio to turn voters against her and don't try to double talk me.
@@davidbrawn2828 she lost because the voters made the decision not to elect her.
That's democracy.
End of conversation
@@allan9603 you people live in a delusional world of your own.
I think she lost by more votes that she received. As popular as Buddy was, he was not that influential. She simply lost on her own, and should have accepted that instead of making Buddy a scapegoat.
