Could be because of the very harsh environment? -Inuits also tend to have small eyes like the Yakutsk. Also, growing up I heard of people saying that couples (husband and wife) tend to look similar over time. Especially those who are always together. I agree as far as the broader scale of people. On a smaller grouping: an adopted child will Minick the expressions, body movements and stances of the parents. The will also eat, and develop other health habits, and live in similar environments as parents. Oddly, my nephew was not in his father’s presence growing up, has unique eating habits and preferences for many other things identical to his father. My daughter as a young girl had a unique stance and body movements identical to my sister who lived far away and could not have modeled it for her. My adopted grandson has his mother’s eyes and eye expressions.🤷🏻♀️

A lot of it is over my head, but the gist of it, is that there is a layer of inherited information somewhere between the cells. And this controls how the cells arrange themselves. So for instance, genes control the proteins in our eyes. But these (hypothetical?) epigenes control having two eyes on our head, and nowhere else.

But around 10 years later I was approached by Eillien in the city centre, and later mentioned the encounter to my mother, and said in passing how Eillien and Alfie had lovely dispositions and were the image of their mom and dad, my mother looked puzzled and eventually remarked, "They were both adopted, from different biological parents as babies". Which of course means they looked that way because of learned expression and behaviour, from the adoptive parents, even as simple as a child learns to form speech sounds generally from parents, and that have an effect on features, and may explain for example why Polish faces differ markedly from Russian, even Belarus and Ukrainian. Not that in the case of Eillien and Alfred a genetic race pool may have been at work, both parents were strong in their Catholic faith and the babies being adopted through a church based adoption society, they may have been of close genetic stock, perhaps of Irish ancestry.

Facial features (along with other structural characteristics) are mostly genetic - the reason people from different parts of the world have different facial features is down to genetics which is just saying that if your father and mother both have certain features then the children will inherit them. On top of this other features are result of environment - so places where nutrition is poor in childhood will have features like stunted growth etc. Items like Melanin are as a result of gradual change over many thousands of generations - it seems likely that human kind started off having lots of Melanin and those without it tended not to reproduce but as populations spread out having Melanin became a disadvantage when not in sunny climes so those people tended not to reproduce as much as those with less Melanin and over a really long period with little mixing we get to where we are today where there are racially diverse traits. Also worth noting that Melanin is produced within the body in response to UV exposure - so some people can change shades through sun exposure but not to the extent where a white skinned person will become dark brown - this ability is also genetic - some people don't have this capability to any noticable extent.
