  • Knowing when it is safe to enter a busy major road can be tricky to judge. A driver has to get their own car ready to go, watch the traffic flow for a gap, and then enter the major road. We have already covered how to master the car control skills required to pull the car away in our other videos, so in this video we will concentrate on how to spot a safe opportunity to go.

    I'm a bit confused why you waited for that cyclist and car at the 2 minute mark when there was so much time to pull out. If you could explain why, that would be great.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 лет назад +10

      When I initially stopped I noticed that the camera pointing left was a bit wonky, so I adjusted it - you can see the view alter a little. Then after that the cyclist was too close to pull out in front of. That junction has an uphill slope, and the cyclist was going quite quickly so it wasn’t worth rushing for. HTH

    There's a road similar to the one in this vid, but it's quite busy with the traffic coming from the left and I need to turn right. Thing is the left is usually In traffic and the vehicles on the right near constantly approaching.
    Would the best method for me who is turning right, wait until there is a clear gap on the right and then drive out and wait for the traffic to the left to give me way?
    Or do I wait until there are gaps on both sides of the road? Cheers.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад +2

      For a driving test we would always wait for both sides of the road to be clear, as if we block any traffic that has priority over us (which is quite likely with this technique) we could be given a serious fault.
      In ‘real-life’ you could try the method you mention, or turn left and turn around somewhere else to resume your journey.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      If we can’t see very far, we must drive slowly so that we are always able to stop smoothly. Usually any harsh braking indicates that we have done a poor job planning ahead.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 года назад +2

      No - we can only go when it's safe. If we force someone else to brake or swerve to avoid us, then it will be a serious fault and fault the test. Sometimes we might need to be patient.

    does anyone have any tips on identifying how big a safe gap should be?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  2 года назад +2

      The advice we offer to our students is to imagine you are a pedestrian trying to cross the road. A gap that would be enough to walk across without rushing should be big enough to take with a car.

      We must wait until there is a safe gap before entering the main road - as we can’t do anything that would cause another driver to take action to avoid us, such as braking or swerving. Basically we must be patient!

      Everyone on the major road has priority over everyone on the minor road. Those people are taking a chance, if they think they can get out without getting in anyones way - or maybe they just don't care! We would rather take our time and make sure we are safe...

    What about when cars edge out?
    Turning right at the junction.
    No cars coming from the right,
    And they edge into the lane, then when a car comes from the right it is either forced to stop until the car is able to pull out complete when no cars are coming from the left.
    Or go on the other side of the road ???

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 лет назад +1

      We should always wait until both lanes are clear before pulling out, but if other people do this and block our path we must stop and be patient. As usual, just do whatever seems safest.
