    Hi! I really like the refillable concept of Kjaer Weis, beautiful and luxe packaging that last years and years. I just do not really care about "clean" makeup anymore as I see it now completely useless from a scientific perspective and quite shady. But I would like to see more brands using metal packaging with a beautiful design made to last a long time.

      Yes! I have lusted over them a long time. But they are super expensive, and really hard to get. I don’t think there is anywhere I can go to try their products in person (in Sydney) and I can’t pay that much without trying it first. Esp foundation type products where colour has to match. But I love their concept/ethos/design

      And I'm so done with people talking down on clean beauty. Yes, the term is stupid, so what? So we should just keep piling on oil industry byproducts on our skin? Which is at best proven not harmful.
      I ain't personally buying anything cause it's branded clean, I look at the formula instead. But I think it's totally stupid to just look at the marketing, and stop there.
      It's totally not scientific to just look at the marketing. Considering that it's people who pretend to believe science who bash everything branded as clean beauty... Yeah, they have zero clue about science, that's for sure.

    • @soniasobaro9127

      @@andij605 many biochemists are saying that the majority of clean makeup products are bad formulated specially regarding the preservative system which apparently is not good enough to preserve the products after a couple of weeks of use... The impact on nature of oil derivatives in cosmetic ingredients is a huge issue and it needs to be addressed for sure but in all honesty I do not think that the solution is going to come with the massive use of organic ingredients in the cosmetic industry.

    • @Kimberly_Sparkles
      @Kimberly_Sparkles 2 года назад +6

      @@andij605 I have an understanding of science and think that clean is mostly marketing and not really connected to any legitimate science. That has nothing to do with my feelings about oil derived products. There is no reason to connect these two ideas, except that clean marketing linked themselves as the solution to oil derived products.

    Awesome topic. Starting a brand is so incredibly difficult and expensive. Shipping especially is a really tough one. I get what you are saying about setting up distribution centers but put that into practice when you are an indie brand and you quickly find its very challenging and not always financially feasible, especially at the start if you don’t have some serious cash behind you.
    Let’s say for example you decide to make mini highlighters. Assuming you are starting small (let’s assume the manufacturing partners MOQ is 10,000 units per production run) your raw materials are more expensive because you are not getting economies of scale yet, and the manual labour costs ( ie factory setting up machinery, clean down machinery, sticking pan into its packaging and then putting packaging into the box, packing into bulk shipping cartons etc etc) are all the same regardless if its a regular size or a mini size. So your costs are incredibly high for a very small product.
    Then you decide to ship it from Australia to your distribution center in say the US or Europe paying for freight and duties as well. You also start to realize that your inventory is now split across multiple locations so what if you sell super fast In Australia and sell out but still have inventory In the US because it’s selling slow there? Are you going to ship it back to Australia from the US again and pay all those costs or just remain sold out in Australia and miss out on sales? You might have to sell through 60% total inventory before you have the cash flow to make another production batch of the factory’s MOQ of 10,000 units.
    You start to do the math and realize your going to have to charge $50 for a mini highlighter which most people likely won’t pay. Sometimes we have to start small and feasible with the dream to grow to be able to offer all of these things in the future 🙌

    My perfect brand is Lisa Eldridge’s brand. Very small amount of products, unique colours. Her shipping rates are also quite reasonable and the customer service is amazing.
    As for trends, I’m sure that people are buying less products in the past 2 years. Beauty enthusiasts have massive collections and we reached peak a couple of years ago. Celebrities are all wearing minimal makeup. Focus is on natural, sheer, dewy base rather than piling on makeup like we did in 2010s. For me age is also a factor. I reached the age when a lot of makeup makes me look older and I can’t really get away with it anymore, so I prefer to keep it minimal, with a bold lip colour.
    Edit: I see brands doing these 20-25% sales multiple times per year - that is just a proof that sales aren’t exactly booming. I am personally more interested in perfumes nowadays and I see some channels showing a lot more interests in perfumes than before. Fragrance channels are also getting more popular. Maybe it’s the next thing after makeup.

    Totally agree with worldwide shipping and made local! Love this topic!
    Some things I also love are
    - small eyeshadow pans (no one needs huge pans!)
    - magnetic pans that can be taken out and mixed up. Consistent sizing so you can build your own palette. viseart and colourpop for this really well which I love
    - salt New York sells single cream blush pans in paper packaging, which I think is great! I just purchased some so will let you know how they last on oily skin.
    - Someone needs to think about making refillable mascara with mix/match wands with formulas. I.e buy a wand you want and buy a formula you want. That way you can just wash and keep the same wand when you run out.
    - and I’ll love to buy your lipstick!!

      SALT is very, very, VERY good ~~ from the quality of the crème tint pro pans to the stunning zippered custom vegan palettes = top notch!! You will not regret if you do dive into Kiki's SALT NY products. I have 4 palettes (2 purchased years ago before the launch of their crème tints to use as upgraded travel Z palettes, but better, multi functional, higher quality, perfect to travel with. ) and 10 of the crème tints that just arrived 2 weeks ago. So freaking good. I pre-ordered in July, well worth the wait and the pre order am absolute savings bonus! Also when ordering, dip out of your comfort zone color and tone wise when you do purchase~~ the products are extremely versatile all can do this: lip, face, cheek and eyes, yes eyes ~~ not gonna say crease proof, am gonna say stunning none the less. i.e the medium deep bronzer= perfect sheer brown lip for my pale af skin tone. ♥ ~~~ the crème tints would, will, be totally fine for folks with not so dry skin too, just read the comment below that some thought they would not be okay for oily skin ~~ totally okay for oily skin. They are not a greasy, oily mess, they melt into the skin and give you the most subtle, beautiful, buildable glow, promise.
      Jump in, you will love ~~ if you love a cream, sheer, buildable, sustainable product.

      Okay so I bought several pans of Salt NY products and I like the product a lot, however, it’s not 100% for me. The colors are a bit too sheer almost and I find that my face “eats” the color more quickly than usual when compared to the formulas I’m accustomed to. I love the tones and how easy it is to mix shades but I always feel like I need to super prep my skin to make the products work for me, which makes it a little less practical for me. All of that being said, I don’t think it’s bad, it just depends on your preferences and how temperamental your skin is. To be fair, I have never heard anyone else have my same issue with their products and once I build them a lot I can see why people who don’t have skin that eats it love the look.
      For reference, I have combo skin and I love/am accustomed to the Colourpop Super Shock Cheeks, Natasha Denona, lilah.b, and Rituelle de Fille cream cheek products.

    Hello Guys :) I'm a big fan of your channel and I just started listening to your video about making your brand. I live in France, and a lot of brands strangely aren't available here or are a lot more expensive than in the USA.
    But one thing I really admire about a skincare brand called La canopée is that they send their clients ideas about what they're working on and the clients would vote. Then send a certain number of clients samples of these products and work on the feedback. They choose different skintones, skin problems, ages, etc. An idea that I'm throwing out there ;) good luck

    I would love to create a foundation range that covers the full spectrum of olive skin tones in different finishes and levels of coverage. I'm a pale olive skin tone, and what few olive foundations are on the market are nearly all in the medium range. Olive skin is such an untapped market for beauty products because olive skin is found across so many ethnicities, yet Western beauty brands seem to think everyone's undertones are either yellow or pink.

    And the minis shouldn't be overpriced! If you compare the price xkg or xml you'll often see that minis are more expensive...Example? MILK hydro grip. Or the nars radiant concealer, the mini (1ml) is 14 euros..the full size 6ml is 27euros. It's a HUGE gap

    • @SabSab-mg6qm
      @SabSab-mg6qm 2 года назад +2

      Yes but the manual labour cost to fill and pack into its primary and secondary packaging (tub/jar and packaging box if it has one) often remain the same as its charged per unit, not per size. A product COGS (cost of goods) is not just the actual formula. Mini formats are incredibly expensive to make for that very reason.

      i am fair olive too! muted and leaning cool! I have Never had an easy time finding a base color product other than blush, because i love blush, but its not as easy for me as it seems for most others. its So hard to find concealer (in a formula i prefer God forbid 😅) if it's pale enough, it will be grey, yellow, orange or peach. or just straight white. I can mix in very pale pink to help color correct my under eyes, but it doesnt match the rest of my face. I have practically given up on foundation. cuz the same exact thing as mentioned with concealer. I have used the tarte foundcealer in Porcelain 8b, which looks slightly peach against my skin in the winter, then in the summer months it looks a bit too pale. like where is the inbetween that im not looking!? I want atleast a mixer that is the same formula as the concealer or foundation/bb-cc cream. even though so many claim to not mess with the integrity of the formula of other base products u are supposed to be mising it with, it always does.

      @@aascottie yeah, i think that works really well for powder products. artdeco's eyeshadows are still the same size they were in the 90s for instance and i still have the original case i bought in '93 and it's in top condition. so they do a good job at that compared to other companies. but it seems they never really were targeted at the fashionable consumer that would want to buy all the shades. and if a large percentage of consumers really wanted these kinds of solutions you'd hear more about the brands that have these solutions on offer. (i haven't bought art deco in years, so i'm not sure how the quality stacks up nowadays. they used to have a waterproof foundation that was outstanding and their blushes and eyeshadows.) but when it comes to liquids and cream. i just don't think refillables can solve the issue.

    • @siiri2052
      @siiri2052 2 года назад +8

      @@elenmelon18 that's true. the question would be if the waste produced might go up instead of down. you'd need a mathematician to sit down and do the maths. for instance a lot of brands change to glass packaging, because it seems more environmentally sound, but the additional weight and energy that goes into glass production and transport can actually make it perform worse form an environmental calculation than recyclable plastic. but it seems more eco friendly to the consumer. i for myself find it very tricky as a consumer, as you can't really gauge what has more impact without in depth knowledge of the manufacturing and recycling process a product is subject to.

Try the sheer tints and sheer to medium foundations, try the no makeup looks, experiment, look after your skin. I'm also wary of finishing up liquid and cream products before they expire, so I can't have much variety in those categories if I want to completely use up products. That's why I deliberate and carefully consider every purchase I want to make, over a long time frame, to see if I actually would use it and it would bring something new to my collection. I'll compare similar things I have and try to dupe it - if I do that and still find what I have lacking, and feel like I would use the product at least on a weekly basis, I'll purchase it. I do need to downsize some of my categories (i.e. bronzer, blush, highlighter, foundation, powders, lipglosses and lipsticks) so I need to not only use things up, but completely stop buying things in those categories.

    For me I prefer mini mascara because I don't use makeup every day so I rarely finish a full size mascara before it's clumpy or weird.

As i wouldn't have any say in what they do I didn't really think it would be a major bias investing in them but with ur channel i can see where ur coming from.

    I agree with you on wanting less quantity (less frequent releases, smaller sized-palettes and/or smaller pans in palettes--with lower prices) and more quality. Re: lipsticks, for a "sandy nude" I like Bite's Power Move Creamy Matte in Amaretto (Tarte's Siesta is nice, too, though maybe a little pinkier...?) and for a "clotted blood" red I've used Nars' "Fire Down Below" for YEARS (with a wee bit of lip balm underneath for my arid lips).

    I love the byop’s I’ve made and loved the choosing and planning aspect of it, but when they arrived they were so different from what I had planned and it was so hard to pick which shades go next to one another so it looks like a nice palette but I can also know which shades work well with one another. I can see how it’s so hard for companies sometimes and trying to make a functional but also pretty looking palette. Even worse is trying to imagine selling it to someone

    I think you guys touching something that if I ever could start a beauty brand I want to do what should be mini foundations and concealers. And have them at a really reasonable price even smaller than many so you can at least color match. Especially if it's going to be only online. Maybe even doing mini bundles of like three to for shades so you can get the best ones for you.

    So I'm a beauty therapist and I work in the cosmetic industry in tandem with cosmetic nurses and dermal therapists etc. I am also a qualified cosmetic chemist and I do really want to start my own skin care brand some day. My brand is going to be dedicated to healthy skin, and my business plan is all about ethical consumption, waste reduction, accessibility and making sure the product perfomance works for a wide wide range of skin types and conditions, for any gender, any skin tone, disabilities etc. It has been in the work for 3 years now and i'm still a year or two from launching and i fully expect to never get past the small "indie" type business model because its impossible to start a huge brand without established influence and the big bucks behind you.
    My core product line will follow treatment guidelines I would give to anyone; a simple routine of cleanse, treat and protect. 3 products for day and 3 products for night. No fluff, no constant releases, only adjustments to formula as technologies and ingredients change.

    I'm all for minis. If available, I prefer to purchase mini or travel size especially for lippies, blushes, highlighters & powders. I think making pre-made palettes recyclable as magnetic empty palettes would be awesome (especially if the package design is pretty) I don''t understand this price per gram attitude, it's makeup not peanut butter. Most of us have more than we will ever use before it expires...
    I've noticed the opposite as someone with drier skin. The assumption is you want a shiny face lol. I don't want my texture emphasized by illuminated products & I want my foundation to last. I'm fine with a natural finish, medium coverage.

    Selfless by Hyram is a good brand ethical model. Good product, but good for environment and people and animals. Mini's may cause more turnover which could result in more waste if people do not reuse or recycle as they should,

    I love Viseart petite pro and the small 12 pans (edits and Étendue) but so many of the different palettes look the same. I’d like one that is more matte with only three shimmers. I’m almost 50 and noticing that matte looks better on me than shimmer. Oh and my tip, wear sunscreen everyday on face, neck and chest as well as hands and arms so that you don’t get sunspots. I’m not too bad but I wish I had put sunscreen on my hands before driving for an hour home each day for years. Love the channel.

    Answering your question from the end of the video: I would invest in drugstore brand from my country. There is this one brand that is vegan, cruelty free, they put out new things only couple times a year and they are often pretty bomb. So no fast fashion and no very cheap quality. Packaging could be better but when i see their prices i can't complain. They like collaborating with smaller youtubers and influencers from my country too. I just think there are nice people behind the brand and i wolud like to support that.

    Interesting chat and fair enough that you know where you want to go and don’t want to go in life. Further, a lot of opportunities that are available in the USA and EU aren’t available here, The discussion about make up trends is interesting, the trend of sheer base products & cream colour products is indicates the focus away from Instagram glam to a more natural look and emphasis on skincare. Is this driven by mask wearing? I know that having to wear a mask ion public and stay at home orders means more casual make up for me. I see lots of channels reviewing these sheer products, but not so many demonstrating these sheer and low key looks and trends. Is it because I’m not watching Tim Tok?
