How to find a cheap apartment in La Fortuna Costa Rica. What is the cost of living in La Fortuna Costa Rica? Can I find a cheap apartment in La Fortuna? We made this video 8 years ago, and it is still accurate. The rent is the same now in 2020 than it was then. Hey Everyone! Can't tell you how many people ask us about our life in Costa Rica. What's our apartment like, how much does it cost, do you work, how do you make ends meet,,,etc. So finally, we decided to let you in our apartment life. I think you'll be VERY surprised how we live. Check this video out if you're considering making the move.

Pura Vida

I have been enjoying your videos quite a bit the past few days. I have never visited Costa Rica, the farthest I have been in CA was Guatemala and Honduras. I spend part of each year in Mexico and starting next year will be living there full time. I found a lot of your observations to be common insofar as how gringos either acclimatize or they go home, how behaving like the typical gringo is often counterproductive etc. I am shocked at the differences in costs though. I live in Puerto Vallarta which of course is a very touristy area but I travel all over Central Mexico as I have friends in Queretaro, Morelia, DF, Guadalajara etc. In PV I bought a condo for 60,000.00 USD 25 years ago, so I do not pay rent. But I have friends who do rent. If one lives outside of the main tourist area, rents are roughly what you are paying or a little less for a similar size place and residential area. In the main tourist area like the "Zona Romantica" or Gringo Gulch they are much higher - 1500.00 USD to 2500.00 USD but they are also luxury apartments or condos. But our utilities are significantly less than yours - internet and telephone is 10mps speech and unlimited local calls [100 mins of international calls free] for 15.00 USD/ month. Electric runs about the same but I do not run air con except in the late summer - July, Aug, and Sept. I have gas for water heating and cooking and that runs about 5.00 a month or less. [I share a tank with 5 other people and we usually do two refills a year for the tank. Transit is 35 cents US for a bus anywhere in town. A taxi runs from $2.50 to $5.00 USD anywhere in the main part of town which is split into three zones with set rates for each zone. I eat mainly local fruit and veggies but I when I eat out I avoid the tourist traps and patronize local restaurants and taco joints. So food runs me around 150.00 USD a month.
I love your videos and it looks like you have made a niche for yourselves there. I wish both of you all the best and look forward to seeing more videos from the two of you.

It is important to note that in Costa Rica it is NOT necessary to have hot water because the weather is not cold. Most people shower with water at room temperature. The water is also pure and of excellent quality so that people drink it directly from the tube and it tastes delicious

Ditto. I'm a single, retired lady who has been retired a few years, but long ago when I was much younger, my BF at the time and I were traveling through Mexico, Belize and Guatemala and we heard about Costa Rica from some other tourists from Europe, so we got a wild hair to travel to Costa Rica. However, we were not able to get through Nicaragua due to the war going on down there. We eventually ran out of money and went back to the States, finished college and established careers. But I never really got Costa Rica out of my mind and since then I started seeing the various travel blogs on You Tube, and started exploring Costa Rica and other parts of Central and South America in hopes of finding a place to move where I could live reasonably cheaply, be surrounded by nature and get out of the insanity in the states. The more I find out about Costa Rica and Pura Vida, the more I'm ready to get down there. So, knowing there are affordable places to rent gives me hope.

A great video. I liked the segment about “Gringo Pricing.” That happened to my girlfriend and I. She is a native Costa Rican and I am from California. The landlord raised her rent 10% when she found out that I will be paying the rent. Seeing that I am still making my California wage (San Jose, California) while living in San Jose, Costa Rica didn’t hurt us too much. It just irked my girlfriend since the landlord only did this because I was from California and we could afford the extra $30 a month. I still can’t get used to the no hot water heater segment. We will be looking at a place with a water heater in the near future.

I moved here 2 years ago and we live on way less than I did in Los Angeles. Different lifestyle with more for less and living in a sustainable community brings the cost down even more since we grow all of our own food.

Just happened across your RUclips videos! Glad I did! I'm older than you (73) but luckily I have traveled quite a bit in the past. I've been living in Merida, Mx now for going on 4 years. I did a lot of research on Costa Rica (my first choice) but the only deciding factor was cost of travel back and forth to LA to visit family and friends. Otherwise we may have been neighbors! As you may know Merida is in the Yucatan peninsula so totally different than Mexico proper. An extremely safe city.
I've now watched many of your videos and find so much similarity. Language, culture and cost of living. Also, the poor Gringos who just don't get it and leave unhappy is true here too. Not a really big loss as far as I'm concerned.
Love your openness and honesty. A difficult thing to find these days. Keep up the great work. Would love to share more with you. if you're ever planning a trip to Chichen Itza or Uxmal (local Mayan archaeological sites - let me know! I would be a pleasure to meet you both. I'll see if you have an email address on your website! Best always - Bruce

I was born in Costa RIca but I've been in the U.S for many years but I was down there a few years ago and I stayed like 6 months in a similar place. that's perfect, since the weather is perfect there, not cold, not so hot you don't really need hot water. some "gringos" have all this fancy apartments just like in the U.S paying like what $600 bucks a month, there is no need for that. CR has 2 seasons, dry and wet. From May to November it rains everyday and depending where you are, it can rain the majority of the day. Clothing hung outside just doesn't dry. I lived there for a year and during the wet months, my laundry took 2 days to dry....yeah.. a dryer is gold there.

OK, I digress, was living in Quepos/Manuel Antonio for a year. Downtown Quepos in a loft I am in my 30's. I never found it 'cheap". Mind you I was not looking for "cheap." I always shook my finger at people saying they could live for cheap in CR. Now, I think I was swindled by my landlord. But I loved my place and location. $300 rent $100 for utilities. Groceries were very expensive for me. I once paid $10 for a watermelon at the farmers market. I eat LOTS of fruit! I love CR!!!! Buen Suerte!

I have lived in CR 7-1/2 years & even in La Fortuna THESE days guys-isn't anything 1/4 decent/similar to your place at LEAST $300+/month UNfurnished? What are your neighbors paying? Rents have gone up a LOT in 6 years!
How's the natural airflow? I'm not seeing lots of windows (the bedroom window seems nice size!!).
If you're in Fortuna, how's the noise level?
To save $ often I'd put the clothes on the line (for that sun-dried smell) & then in the dryer for about 10 min. to fluff them up!

Good video guys, what we used to do was boil a big pot of water on the stove, pour it in a bucket until full and take it in the shower with us, and put a little cold water in it, and then you'll have some luke warm water. you said you split the internet 3 ways, is that with your neighbor as well?

I will only mention one aspect of your question: women. If you're married this won't interest you, but if you're single and looking...the women in CR are usually
    lighter-skinned and prettier.

I hope this video shows how much rent is? You know in dollars. Food prices (not just fruit). How much is a doctors visit? Crime rates? Come on,how hard is that! By the way propane is at par with gasoline prices. At least here in Canada .

Yea thats cheap living.but not a lot of perks. In vietnam you can have a modern apartment near the beach with a pool. Food is outrageuos.for the same money and have a scooter for transportation.

The food, rent and electricity information was phenomenal. Truly I appreciate your candor. However, your video is 2 years old. I just subscribed to your channel and have not viewed all of your videos so this question might be irrelevant...,How has this changed since 2012? I understand rent and utilities have increase exponentially?

in Romania everything is a lot cheaper --fast internet,TV.100 chanels+home phone +cell=$17/month---rent for one bedroom $100-200/month---electric around $20/month--water---$8/month

    • @orangekitten9408
      @orangekitten9408 10 лет назад +3

But then you have to live with the Romanians lol. The weather is like living in Minnesota from what I have heard (its definitely not Costa Rica). You are far away from family in USA, corruption is rampant there. There was a story in Daily Mail how a local who lived in another city had his entire house left to him by his parents in another city, dismantled (brick by brick) and stolen (Amazing). Then the neighbors planted corn over the empty property, oh and the neighbors saw nothing of course. Plus their language is very hard to learn, not at all easy like Spanish. Not to mention all the Romanians try to leave the country, tells you something doesnt it.

***** YEAH SURE move to Romania where even the Locals get Ripped OFF
