Hollywood Canteen (1944) Official Trailer - Bette Davis, John Garfield Movie HD
Two soldiers on sick leave spend three nights at the Hollywood Canteen before going back to active duty. With a little friendly help from John Garfield, Slim gets to kiss Joan Leslie, who he has been dreaming about while in the Pacific. He meets her later at the Farmer's Market. On the third night, Slim is the millionth man into the Canteen, earning him a date with Joan. Slim thinks he's been duped when she doesn't show up at his train. Slim's buddy Sergant dances with Joan Crawford. Canteen President Bette Davis praises the canteen and the war effort. Virtually everyone Warners could spare entertains.

The Hollywood Canteen was built from an old barn mainly by John Garfield and Bette Davis....it was the most star studded charitable outreach that ever existed the list of the famous personalities who gave freely there is beyond belief !!.....and yet today there is no marker in Hollywood to celebrate this wonderful outreach where it once stood...

Never knew Jane Wyman could sing so beautifully! Classic Hollywood really got behind the war effort!

The whole movie can be found on dailymotion, no link required.
The cameo appearance of Sydney Greenstreet & Peter Lorre is funny !

Hollywood Canteen is a great film with a great ending (often copied). If you like old music, swing, story-telling type songs, and the old Acts (Andrews Sisters, Eddie Cantor, etc.), then you will really enjoy Hollywood Canteen.

In the same vein as the all-star musicals that suddenly popped up at the beginning of sound movies - lots of stars making short appearances, often doing something out of character as a gag. Interesting that the Andrews Sisters and Roy Rogers appeared in this, since they weren't Warner Bros. contracted performers at the time, I don't think.

There was another canteen in New York that they also made a movie about called "State Door Canteen". Katharine Hepburn was in it. It was good too.

Yes, it was filmed in the months right after Pearl Harbor (mid-1942). The mood is tense, especially among the servicemen (many real ones among the extras). Great film also -- many NY stage actors of the day like Georgie Jessel and Helen Hayes are in Stagedoor Canteen (a real place in NY at that time).

The only really good act was Ethel Merman. That was the problem; one of the few studios which were NOT into 'musicals' decided to put on a musical review of its (mostly) non-singing stars. Big mistake. Still, it's a great scrapbook movie now.
