- And so begins a new phase of WML, in which the 4th panel slot is now a permanently rotating one. The same happened with Dorothy's spot after her death in 1965.
MYSTERY GUEST: Ford Frick [MLB Commissioner]; Linda Darnell [film actress]
PANEL: Arlene Francis, Garry Moore, Dorothy Kilgallen, Bennett Cerf
Linda Darnell was the most beautiful actress in Hollywood. I believe she never got the credit she deserved for her acting ability. The Hollywood studios should have treated her better. It was nice to see her in this episode of What's My Line. Her warmth, sense of humor and beauty shine through! She seemed like a really nice person who deserved better luck in life. I try to catch her movies whenever I can. May God rest her soul.
Thanks for posting this episode!
so right,
+Joel Waskiewicz wonderful tribute--yes, she was all of the above.
The most beautiful actress in Hollywood??? That's debatable . The most beautiful Eyes in Hollywood , that's not debatable . Linda had the most beautiful eyes in the World .
Etnalleb In Hollywood, she was known as "the most perfect face in Hollywood". Everyone is of course entitled ro their own opinion.
Elizabeth Taylor was clearly the most beautiful, this woman was gorgeous too but wears fake lashes Taylor had a double row of black thick lashes even as a child. Yes her eyes were violet colored.
Linda was absolutely adorable. A perfect combination of dazzling good lucks, scintillating personality and wonderful sense of humor.
Beautiful Linda Darnell --wow, what bone structure, no harsh angles, just flowing curves.
@John Texas It certainly is perfect to me. She's a knockout. 😍
If you listen closely you can hear one of the women on the panel say 'She is so beautiful' as Linda Darnell leaves the stage. I'm so happy to see many of her movies are available on youtube. She's very talented and one of the most stunning actresses ever.
P an I did hear it this time. And I'm sure was Arlene Francis who said it. She's not a wrong is she. Linda Darnell is gorgeous what up a terrible way to perish. And only 42 years old
I thought it was Dorothy.
what a doll! And some honest sweetness, too. Agree, she was underappreciated as an actress. Terrific in letter to three wives, and her performance in no way out is a knockout. left us too soon.
Beautiful lady who died way too young in a very unfortunate way. Rest In Peace Linda Darnell. Long overdue condolences to the family for your loss. 😔💐
One of the best episodes I've watched so far. Mr. Frick was nice but Mr. Harben really got the ball rolling. He was so effervescent, funny and a real class act. Linda Darnell was a blast! Beautiful, smart and funny-they don't make them like they used to! Great show! :)
Well - according to Mr.Frick I was thinking of my horrible experiences with English cooking. You just can´t enjoy it ....
He wasn't just a demonstrator, he was Britain's first celebrity TV chef on the BBC show Cookery(BBC shows tended to have simplistic titles at the very start) starting in 1946.
Agreed! Harben was an experienced TV performer, and his poise and comfort in front of the camera really shows. I tend to enjoy the guests more when they're confident and at ease on camera (or do a good job faking it!). This was one of the best shows I've seen so far.
Such a beautiful lady and wonderful actress. The way she passed was so horrible and heartbreaking. R.I.P Linda Darnell
I had to read up on that as I didn’t know the details. Horrific 😢
Linda Darnell had unbridled joy doing this show. A delight to watch!
One of my favourite mystery guests. Linda had a wickedly accurate Italian accent! She was great!!
It was impressive! Had them all fooled.
She died a hero
Had me fooled
That accent made my jaw drop. It was like a blending of Debbie Reynolds and Sophia Loren. GREAT fun!
She did fool them!
Linda Darnell: Lovely lady, talented actress, tragic death.
Yes and died way too young.
Too good! 21:23
Garry Moore: "We spent a night..."
Linda Darnell: "Sir? What? [Laugher] I'm not married. It's all right. Go ahead."
Garry Moore: "Yes, but I am."
Darnell a beautiful woman and very underrated actress .
WHAT'S MY LINE is immeasurably entertaining; we need to get back to this type of good clean amusement.
nobody's this decent anymore
Sadly, you are so right....
There are and have always been decent people in the world, I know plenty of them. You just have to dig a little deeper to find them nowadays.
Don't give up hope.
Don't hold your breath.
Wow Linda Darnell speaking italian! I love her even more now. What a beautiful lady! Tragic death but I find quite moving that an actress and a person is still fondly remembered after all these decades after her death.
She looked as though she should be Italian.
Part Mexican I think
@@reelincoln7747 incorrect........she has Cherokee ancestry from her mother's side.
Linda Darnell is my favorite Old Time Hollywood Beauty.
She was so beautiful that she starred in adult film roles while she was still a teenager.
The films she did with Tyrone Power were great.
They were both so good looking. Wish we still had actors like that today.
She was the most beautiful woman in movies. Stunning !!!
I honestly didn't know about Linda Darnell before I watched this. I thought Elizabeth Taylor was the most beautiful but this woman is something else. Wow. Just gorgeous.
It's worth watching the show with Dana Wynter. She was extremely beautiful.
Linda ? Did you not see Arlene sitting up there ? and Her Majesticness Dorothy ?
Yes, Agreed she was just as beautiful as Liz , it would be pretty close who was more beautiful I'd hate to have to live on the difference.
I love the way John Daly touches people on this show to make the person so comfortable and at ease and have a laugh with them as well 💖💯💖 💯💖💯...
Today he'd be accused of assault and condemned by the internet for being a predator.
The British cook was one of the best contestants ever - but he was familiar with the rules of medial entertainment, so it was easier for him than for a nervous lady from somewhere in Montana who was in TV for the first time in her life.
The episode with a challenger who has poise in front of the cameras because of numerous other television appearances, beauty queens, and so on are often the most fun because the challenger is so much more comfortable and able to have fun with their appearance. The further back you go in WML, the more this is true because television was still such a new medium then. Now, most people are a ham in front of a television camera, even when they aren't the feature.
Indeed - he was a very funny guy. Jolly good!
Linda is stunning! I find the "sign in" portion of the program very interesting. I love seeing the different handwriting, and whether they use cursive or block letters, or if they add flourishes.
I've often wondered about those who signed in by printing rather than cursive. Did they prefer to write that way, were they ashamed of their handwriting, or was their signature so illegible that they were told to print?
Interestingly, this reflects a large desire to shield the writer's secrets. Some people have hard events or qualities they care to mask. It's a blind.
I wondered if the contestants actually practiced writing on chalk boards before going on the program. It's not easy to write clearly with chalk at the angle they were asked to stand.
Gorgeous and witty lady.
Sadly enough she lost her extraordinary life in one of the most tragic accidents in the Hollywood film industry history...
If only Linda had followed the Peggy Lee's advice. Peggy had never smoked in bed...
R.I.P. Linda Darnell.
Witold Banasik Darnell wasn't smoking in bed. She'd been smoking in the living room while watching TV and a butt was left smouldering in the chair cushions. She was staying with a friend; the friend got out through an upstairs window but Linda was scared of heights so tried to leave via the front door. The resulting burns killed her.
"Don't smoke in bed." They wrote a song with that title.
Linda Darnell has been called the "Brooke Shields of the 40's. She was born in 1923 and was only 15 years old when she signed her first contract with 20th Century Fox. She began playing adult leads immediately because she had an "adult" beauty.
She played more than once across from one of her idols Tyrone Power!
Wouldn’t that be Brooke Shields is the 70s version of Linda Darnell
Linda Darnell was such a beautiful actress. The characters she created were so warm & wonderful. I fell so so in love with her when I was a boy
Yes, played so many movies and several with Tyrone Power “Zorro”, “Blood and Sand “, with Henry Fonda in the classic western “My Darling Clementine “ and many other. Loved her since I was a boy!
I had never heard of Linda Darnell . What a beautiful and charming lady.
neither had I. I was just now watching "Blackbeard, The Pirate (1952)", she was leading lady in it. (Note: Irene Ryan was in it to, but I did not even recognize her. She played "Granny" in "Beverly Hillbillies"). Did not know who she was, eventhough I'm sure I'd seen the movie before. Then I found out who she was, never heard her name before. Looked at her Filmography, I'm sure I've seen some of her movies, but I guess I never took note of her, her name before. She is gorgeous!! Such a "healthy" look.
Linda Darnell was exquisite....
hairyscotman Absolutely...looks Spanish
She was beautiful..

Left Us, Way to Soon..
This particular show from start to finish was consistently funny and lively. Thanks for uploading.
Re Linda Darnell, it is so sad to look at her here and know that only 9 yrs later she was in a terrible house fire that caused her death.
Linda Darnell truly was one of the great beauties of the silver screen.
we really need to go back to wearing suits and evening dresses
Or just looking clean.
Yes we really really do
No, we don't. Way too much trouble. No suits. No ties. Certainly no bow ties. Anachronistic at best, but downright diabolical.
Go for it ... they can't touch you for it.
Jennifer I agree 👍
I cannot believe how many celebrities have sat next to John Daley. What a lucky man!
Linda Darnell met a very sad, unfair end.
Ryan O'Brien “Don’t smoke” is the lesson here.
@@RobJazzful Sage advice from a moron. Don't smoke it's just that simple. No it's not that simple. But you're perfect of course. SMH
Linda Darnell has that velvet husky sexy voice....
She did have a beautiful, sexy voice!
very much like Lauren Bacall. both very beautiful
Linda Darnell what a beauty!
That's a fun episode. I love it when the panelists argue and discuss with each other, and this episode had a lot of that.
A truly enjoyable episode .
(Never knew about the tragic death of Linda Darnell - so sad.)
the chef is one of my all time favorite guests on WML!
Linda seems to be having so much fun! ...it's contagious....
Linda Darnell did a wonderful Italian accent.
Linda Darnell predicted she would die a fire. She often talked of it. As can be seen here, she was a true beauty both physically and as a wonderful person. She had many friends in many places.
Linda Darnell died aged 41 on April 10, 1965 from burns sustained over 90% of her body in a house fire the previous day. A sad end to a wonderful career and beautiful lady.
She'd just watched one of her first movies, Star Dust, on TV and went to b ed when the fire started.
How did the fire start ? Was that ever determined ?
Victoria Garbarino Wikipedia states that the fire was accidental and started from careless cigarette smoking
@@azysko3213 by her sister, who she was staying with, in Chicago. The sister was the careless one with the cigarette. The sister survived. Some wrongly assume it was Linda, maybe because she was a smoker too. Just such a damn tragedy.
Just like legendary singer and actor Jack Cassidy eleven years later.
WOWZER!!! I knew Linda Darnell was pretty, but she is GORGEOUS!!!!
The chef was correct in saying he wasn't employed by the British government. The BBC is government chartered and funded, but is ran independent of the government as a non-profit corporation, much like PBS in the U.S.
Such an extraordinarily talented and beautiful creature, such a shame the way her life ended.
what a beautiful face and SMILE linda darnell had!
+elchoya100 She's great, especially alongside Dana Andrews in "Fallen Angel" (1945), directed by Otto Preminger. Intriguing characterizations, filmed with great noirish style; a film equal to or even (in my own humble opinion) greater than Preminger's more-famous "Laura" from the year before.
Watched that movie yesterday. So much fun to see Alice Faye/Linda Darnell contrast. Wonderful film.
Mr. Harben was delightful..would like to know more about him and his books...Linda Darnell...Very Classy...so sad about her untimely and tragic passing.
Exquisitely gorgeous lady, and a sense of humor to boot. Sigh.
The segment with the TV chef was fun.
One of the best guests ever. So dynamic!
Beautiful my mom loved her so i took notice as well god bless her soul
Linda was so beautiful and irreplaceable and she’s never been.
I love the short hair styles women had in the 1950's.
This was fun watching Garry Moore on the panel.
Linda Darnell seemed to be a very intelligent lady
the way she smiles and bites her lip is so adorable 😍🥰
Marylin monroe used to do that too, they look very similar when they do that
She's so gorgeous she can shoot poison darts at me and STILL look stunning.
There is a certain vulnerability about her and also a desire to please. Both very appealing traits.
My dad’s 5th cousin. I love her movies. Sad how she died.
She was GORGEOUS !!
A very beautiful underrated lady!
I have been in love with Linda Darnell since I first saw My Darling Clementine, gorgeous eyes.....
I don't know who Linda Darnell was but she was stunning!
I just looked up her passing. She sadly died in a house fire ☹️
Stunning is an accurate description!
This aired on my dad's 17th birthday when he lived in South Amboy, New Jersey where he was born & raised. My dad would join the Navy a few months later.
Philip Harben - a magnificent cook, and household name in the UK - so many years later.
He was my great-uncle, believe it or not. I basically just grew up on stories about him from my dad so it's nice to see someone say something nice about him!
@@zasherr I remember him very well on the TV with his striped butcher's apron which was his trade mark. It's lovely to see him on this show and to remember how amusing he was.
She’s beautiful. Her personality is great. Lovely.
Unfortunately, Linda Darnell died from injuries suffered in a house fire about nine years after this show aired. She was 41.
Linda is a very beautiful woman and a geat actress. She, somehow, reminds me of Natalie Wood.
Why? More similar to Dorothy Lamore or someone like that.
They both died tragically in their early 40's.
@tinwoods no she does not.
Yes. They both had beautiful eyes and smiles.
@@TheIrishrogue68 And cute laughter.
1. Linda Darnell was absolutely stunning and a damn fine actress. Such a sad ending. 2. Goldfish aren't animals?
I expected John Charles Daley to correct the guest, but being short of time, I think he was distracted.
Yes I was thinking the same thing
Of course Goldfish are animals. They aren't plants. It will take the panel and John a few more years to get better at the biological science terminologies. This is certainly not their expertise at this point. However, for the point of the questioning, they are all on the same page, so it probably doesn't make a lot of difference in the game.
@FergusMcDopey - Yes, the kingdom of goldfish is animalia. John must have been too pressured for time. There are times when something within a category can be different in differing fields: like, a tomato is a botanical fruit, but in culinary terms a vegetable. But, it is still plant life, vegetation, neither animal nor mineral. This show was for charming fun and not a lot of money involved, so I think they were not strict in the way they were with "Password" definitions and the game's rules.
I remember Philip Harben's tv show quite well. He was a highly talented cook and a splendid communicator of good basic cookery at a time when post-war rationing had just come to an end. Later he was somewhat overshadowed by the flamboyant excesses of Fanny Cradock (who he didn't care for)
Mandeley100 I quite a agree, he was a far better cook than Fanny ever was and had a much nicer personality.
P p
First time seeing an episode where each panelist was already seated. Much better than the individual intro.
They were seated into first couple of years.
I suspect the ladies wanted to sashay in and exhibit their expensive dresses, rather than just being seen from the chest up.
@@shuroom57Exactly and the woman audience loved it😊
@@robertjean5782I'm a man, and I prefer the fashion entrance.
This was the week after Fred Allen suddenly passed away. Thus, Daly's comment at the end about telegrams and letters (of condolence, undoubtedly).
I'd venture to guess their were a mountain high of mail sacks😊
Linda Darnell may be the single most beautiful woman that ever lived....
Linda was so beautiful ❤ may she rest in peace
Love Linda's makeup here, esp. the eyebrows!
I know this issue has been addressed *many* times before, but I'd like to know just how a man who breeds goldfish can say he has nothing to do with animals! (And once again, John Daly lets him get away with it.)
They seem to presume that all animals are mammals
According to the panelists only creaures living on land were considered to be animals; fish were not- unfairly of course.
@@WitoldBanasik What about birds? Snakes? Gators?
She was just so beautiful..
Is no one going to talk about how humorous, insanely witty and entertaining the british tv chef is?
Many have😊
Garry is a treasure-and-a-half when it comes to early television.
Wow Linda Darnell is a stunner!
What a charming and beautiful woman she was.
I would watch Linda read the phone book.
Mostly when actors do phony accents on this show I get annoyed but LINDA DARNELL was clearly enjoying herself so much as a REAL southern belle from TEXAS playing an Italian Gina Lollobriggida-type character that it really rubbed off hilariously on the moderator, the panel, the audience and the viewers at home. Such an UNDER-rated and talented actress who met with such a tragic end falling asleep while smoking on the couch of her secretary outside Chicago and burning to death at the untimely age of just 41 in 1964. RIP.
The secretary was the one in the living room, where the fire began. Linda was upstairs, when the fire started. She came down and was the only one of the three who didn't get out. Tragic!
The phoney accents are needed to fool the panel😊
@trumancapote9097 Linda Darnell died on the 10th of April, 1965 💔
Linda Darnell looking every inch the beautiful star she was. She died very young in a house fire about 10 years later.
People were so gracious back then.
Such a beauty & talented actress. So horrible to be burned in a house fire, resulting in her death. She was afraid during the fire scenes she was in ‘Forever Amber”. She was also wonderful in “My Darling Clementine” with another of my favorites, Victor Mature, & “Letter To Three Wives”. She was taken too soon!
I agree with lanzacash; I always thought June Allyson rather tomboyish. Linda Darnell was gorgeous!
Wow... Miss Darnell... Lovely.
The cooking show demonstrator was hilarious and brilliant and I have no idea why!
Linda Darnel, what a beautiful woman.
Fast forward so many years later and it’s still alive and kicking!
One of my favs Linda's beauty made people not notice what a great actress she was, same for Ava Gardner ❤
That chef guy was very lively.
I love how John clarifies at the end of answers - YES, he doesn't do - NO! :D
Like many beautiful women Linda was from Texas!
Linda Darnell was fine as Hell!!
Nice modulated voice, firm personality...she had quality. Alpha Plus Woman there! They should have cloned her, multiple times.
I wholeheartedly agree. Linda was an amazing beauty and highly talented and intelligent. Such grace, wit, charm and poise. And, off the charts sexy. 😍
WOW I thought Linda was going to get away with that one.
Loved this lady.
My Mother looked an sounded like her. Then I
Saw her personality and she was a beautiful inside as out. I miss my precious Momma an Miss Darnel
Also.
This show is wildly entertaining!
Kilgallen always asking EXTRA questions!
Linda was wonderful. Such a tragic ending to a young life.
So beautiful, so tragic.
Miss Darnell played Lolita Quintero in The Mark Of Zorro (1940), I felt in love immediately, what a beautiful and gracious lady !!! Too bad Don Diego De La Vega (Tyrone Power) arrived first. One Vega beating another.
Blessings from San Juan PR !!!
since when is a goldfish not an animal?
+Doug w. I wondered the same thing. New World Encyclopedia has it classified as Kingdom:Animalia But Arlene did not complain. 2 episodes later Dorothy said "is it an animal as opposed to fish or fowl. " So , I guess this is a panelist "shortcut".
A common mistake, more like. People confuse 'animal' with 'mammal'.
Probably by the same reasoning that vegetarians eat fish but not "animals". not an uncommon assertion for that time period as fish wasn't considered the same as land animals
I've noticed they seem to mean mammal when they say animal.
When it floats upside down?
I just watched Linda Darnell in Unfaithfully Yours. She looks great. Died tragically and young.
Mr. Philipp Harben reminds me of Mr. French from Family Affair.
Very nice that Linda Darnell donated her winnings. It recently occurred to me that none of the other celebrities that I’m aware of requested that their winnings be donated.
Many have donated! 😊
I just read my own comment from a year ago. And here I am, about to criticize folks for only remembering marvelous people like Linda Darnell for their tragic deaths. Then, my comment about mugging. I responded to that below too. I realize now that film actors tend to do that when they aren't used to live TV cameras. Gosh, she was lovely!
