Those days are long gone I'm afraid... except for a few of us sticklers. The last time I opened a door for a female she read me the riot act and called me a misogynist. "Why did you do that?", she yelled, "I can do it myself!"... I replied, "You can bring it up with my mother, she taught me.". Yeesh.

Not many people now a days know Imogene Coco - which I loved her with Shows of Shows with the greats of Sid Caesar and others that i can't remember. As a child I remember laughing so hard I tired to stop but my sides would hurt. These people made show comedy show great!

I so enjoy this show. I have an extensive collection of old black and white shows, movies and series. Many rare out of print. When I do turn on my television, I watch news and the channels that play old movies and wonderful old westerns! I always have felt I was born in the wrong era.
I heartily agree - I describe old shows like this as Television from before the downfall of civilization.

I wanted to see Victor Borge in concert. Never got the chance. Watched him on PBS. May all these people RIP.
IIRC, I believe that my late parents were able to see him performing in person in Portland, OR when they were early into their marriage, during the mid-late '60s. As Americans of Nordic heritage (Finnish), there was possibly another level of appeal for "The Great Dane". Growing up in the 70s/80s, we used to watch his appearances on television regularly, including those on PBS.
John Daley is so suave - so totally different from Garry Moore. . . and both work just great in their own way. . . :}

Imogene Coca - Your Show Of Shows ...- a comedy legend
Don't forget she was in the Admiral Broadway Revue too. That show was *so* successful... it got canceled. It was sponsored by a TV manufacturer who sold out ALL of their product because of the success of Imogene & Sid on the Revue. So the sponsor pulled out and the show had to be canceled due to lack of funding. Their comedic genius literally pushed America into the TV era!
Nice to see people still watching in 2019.

Every time it's Victor Borge's turn to ask questions, the show comes grinding to a halt.
He's so funny though. I don't mind that...I love him...
His own shows do the same thing to me--come to a grinding halt. I always want him to play the #@%* music and shut up. I do love him in spite of this. I think his comedy may consist of frustrating his audience to the point of plotting his demise, but not quite to the point of executing the plan.
His humour appealed to the audiences of the time and times have changed. When more talented comedians begun appearing on TV his act changed and he basically disappeared from the air. No offense to people who find him funny but history will not remember his as one of the greats, his talent and style simply does not warrant it.

There was an Aunt Imogene in my family. Her name was pronounced, "EYE- mo- gene" instead of how Bennett pronounced it, "M-oh-gene." Perhaps because we're from Texas and he was from New York.

well, you never know with bennett's pronunciations: he uses the hard 'g' in los angeles (not uncommon) and a short 'i' in pizza (to rhyme with 'hits ya').
Where is Sid Ceasar and why didn't he appear with Imogene Coca? Who says Imogene was ugly? Imogene was not ugly, her face and her smile was her Glory; the faces she made was to make us laugh. She was so remarkably talented and funny.

"Your Show of Shows" had ended, and she was not invited to be in "Caesar's Hour" the female comic role going to Nanette Fabray.
She got her own show in 1954, The Imogene Coca Show.

The studio had forced The Show of Shows to end, sending their producer to a new sitcom, split up the writers, gave Sid his own hour long show, and Imogene her own show. They claimed to be making three successes out of the one. Unfortunately 2/3 new ones failed within (2?) years and even Caesar started to crack under the grueling time schedule they had forced on his contract. In other words, the studio 'business' hacks ruined the magic of The Show of Shows for absolutely no reason.
It could have kept rolling on, profitably, in the same way Jackie Gleason did with the Honeymooners or Lucille Ball did with Lucy. Remember, Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks, original writers on The Show of Shows didn't find their own success until the 1960s because they got such garbage contracts after The Show of Shows. If anything, the studio executives were likely intimidated by the original team's success. It's a pity; that magic, much of which came from vaudeville was never replicated.

Borge is hilarious when he's doing his own thing - one of the all-time greats. But here, he's completely out of his element. It's like he has no concept of how to play this game. He tries for laughs and ends up just wasting time. If you wanted to win this game, you definitely wouldn't pick Victor for your team. In contrast to Steve Allen, who could be funny and play the game well at the same time.

+PhilBagels They weren't trying to achieve the same ends, though. And that's not to discredit your right to dislike Victor on WML if that's how you feel about him-- I understand your point here. I just find him irresistibly funny, and I wouldn't want to even try to explain why. I just do. :)

I'm a big Victor Borge fan. But I will admit he does slow down the game. Also, I don't know why Dotty and Bennett beat up on John about the "legs" of the octopus issue. I think John was absolutely right in his reasoning. Even after Imogene came out Bennet had to throw in one more zinger towards John (and even carried over to the next week)

Yes, you brought this up once before when I'd posted some shows out of order by mistake. I don't think we can count that first show after Fred died-- the intro on that one was an anomaly. But I don't have any notes in my log about this change in the opening format, and I haven't been generally rewatching the shows as I post them (I still have too many later in the run that I haven't watched even once yet). But if you figure this out as the episodes go along, definitely let us know!

+What's My Line? Yes, I did bring it up before but this time it isn't about the order, Apparently they decided after the last Fred Allen show and for the next several episodes to have the panelists aren't at their desk at the start of the show. Not a big deal, but I thought it was kind of unusual.
The next time we see them walking out one at a time over to the panel desk it will be ** permanent **. ;)

+zardon4 I had noticed that they went back to sitting at the desk for the introductions again too. I was also happy to hear Arlene harking back to Fred's insistence on saying "at" or "to" "my left" instead of "on my left," which they had started doing after Fred had received a letter correcting that phrase, though Fred was the only one who consistently said "at my left" ever after. I don't think Dorothy or Bennett ever stopped saying "on my left," though. Another question. Does anyone know why they switched the seating order of the ladies? Dorothy had always been on the far end -- the first to be introduced, but they switched her place with Arlene's several shows back -- I'd have to look again to see exactly which one, but I think it was either Fred's last show or the one before that.

Borge, Cox, and Block wasted too much time hunting laughs and in the case of block being inappropriate with the lady guests. Arlene in particular visibly disliked Blocks antics and Dorothy was embarrassed often.

Yeah, I can completely understand why folks might have this reaction to him (kinda like our comments about Wally Cox). I'm a softee for Borge, though. I just love him.

I have to agree with the octopus objections. Their tentacles are properly identified as arms, not legs.
The word "octopus" literally means "eight feet". They are used for locomotion, so they are quite validly referred to as legs. They are also used for grabbing and holding and manipulation, so they can also be validly referred to as arms.
I agree Borge is awful.

I read online that scientists have recently determined that two of the octopus's arms are actually legs (the other six are arms). Octopi have no feet.
I remember watching this as a child
From 3:24 to about 3:29, Bill Cullen is messing with the feathery protrusions on Jayne's hat. Nobody, including Jayne, seems to notice. Then, at 3:55 he appears to be picking lint off Jayne's shoulder. Again, no reaction from Jayne.
Jane looked especially beautiful tonite. This was before she started applying makeup with a trowel and the result was she looked like a clown.

They all criticize Hal Block but you can't bear Victor Borge here who is not focused and asks questions which were asked before. The WMS panel was a bit silly.
I usually enjoy Victor Borge a lot in these, but he overdoes it in this episode.

I am 66. I remember well how much everyone loved Imogene Coca. Cannot imagine anyone thinking she was "ugly." Everyone thought she was adorably cute. And as to Sid C. not being there; they had broken up as a team as clearly said in the panelists' questioning.
Did battled alcoholism and was not always dependable. He beat it after years of torture

I don't think some of these celebrities realize just how distinctive their voices are, even when they try to disguise them.
Imogene and Sid in the “At the Movies” bit is one of the funniest skits ever conceived. Its success depends entirely on the two comedians, however. I think Carl Reiner was also in it as the boyfriend.
Have you seen them in "Le Grande Amour" skit? It's a parody of French dramatic films, also featuring Carl Reiner as the boyfriend. Brilliantly crafted. Imogene's physical comedy shines there, and you get the sort of 'sensitive' sweet side of the men. It's very well done.

They were obviously testing out possible replacements for fred allen. Its equally obvious that victor borge isn't going to be it. Not unless they wanted to expand the show to 60 minutes!
They never intended to replace Fred; they decided to instead have a "guest spot" with a different panelist each week. Borge, by himself, can be hilarious; on this show, he's just annoying.

People complain about victor borge?, the question I have to ask is if people looking back in 30 or 40 years will find some of the comedians we find hilarious, the same way way we do.
Are there any real comedians now? None since Seinfeld that I know of. Humor is now considered un PC. 😒 They're all constipated with wokeness.

I am not sure if they still allow octopi hunting in Puget Sound which Sequim Washington is on. However I have heard that the world's largest octopi are located in Puget Sound

I think Victor Borge is wonderful but just as you wouldn't sprinkle chocolate flakes on top of a Sunday roast he is totally the wrong act for the show. It surely requires wit rather than slapstick. I see Peter Ustinov appears on the panel for a later episode. That's the type of intelligence combined with humour and performance savvy you need. You don't book Stan Laurel or Stanley Unwin for this sort of thing!
You are right about Stan Laurel and the feeling was mutual. One commenter on an episode said that Laurel would not watch this show because he did not like all the 'stuffed shirts" who appeared on it.

I that thought of doing it before, and this time I did: I set the speed at double time when Borge was on. Even then, it was too long.

I'm not a Victor Borge fan, but to be fair, you don't hire a comedian and then complain when he tries to be funny. The show must have expected him to 'stall' and tell jokes, just like Wally Cox, Groucho and others.
it's not the fact that he told jokes and was....'funny.' he just didn't know when to stop. a little goes a long way, and too much goes from the humorous to the obnoxious fast. to me, funny men like steve allen and mort sahl got it right; groucho and jerry lewis got it all wrong.
@@johnsudar5567 Groucho is one that I personally try to avoid, and find even his own program quite tiresome. It goes without saying I'm not much of a fan of the Marx Brothers films, either.
He wasn't a comedian he was a raconteur. He told stories. Groucho never called himself a comedian you know
@@johnsudar5567 I saw Mort Sahl. An obnoxious bore. Those other guys who "got it wrong" kept audiences coming back for more and more for the better part of a century.
The only one who didn't really get it as a panelist was Wally Cox but he comes across uncannily like Andy Kaufman who must have seen Wally at some point.

I always try to guess what the "Line" of the new contestants are .......in this episode with Mr. Frick, because he was from Washington State, I guessed "Salmon Fisherman", close but no "tentacle"!

See the show with the lady gorilla hunter. Borge is hands down the funniest panelist ever. Telegrams and phone calls flooded the network and demanded he come back for an encore.
Borge doesn't know how to put the breaks on. A little humor go's a long way which Borge doesn't practice.

Actually Bill Cullen was a game show host too so he makes at least three panels hosts that have now appeared on the panel of WML with the other being Robert Q Lewis of course. Now I'm wondering if John Daly made any appearances on panels of other shows
Good question. I just watched Bill Cullen host the first "The Price is Right" show. He was allowed to sit when he hosted that show. It was completely different than "The Price is Right" is now.
@@lynettepalecek3141 Bill Cullen had to sit because he had had polio. He had difficulty walking and standing for any length of time. I am astonished he made it through the entire segment standing. You may notice that he steadied himself on the back of the chair. You may have also noticed that they went to commercial after the sign in to conceal his awkward gait across the stage.
@@CottonO I know about Bill Cullen's polio. He had it since he was a child. He really wanted to be an athlete, but he knew that he couldn't do that because of the polio and that's why he chose to be a game show host. I actually saw him shoot pool on the game show "The Price is Right." It was very difficult for him, but he was bound and determined to do it and he did it! He was the host of the game show "Three of a Kind," and he had to stand for that show, but he did end up sitting on a very high chair. The view of the chair was hidden from the audience, but it was obvious that he was sitting because he was shorter towards the end of the show than he was at the beginning of the show. He didn't like having the public watch him walk because he didn't want that kind of attention. I know exactly how he felt because when I was a teenager I had to wear a body brace because I had scoliosis. The part of my brace that covered my neck showed and a lot of people stared at me, including my teachers and my fellow students. I hated that kind of attention. I wanted to be treated normally so badly, but that didn't happen. I can really empathize with Bill Cullen when he didn't want people to watch him walk because they would stare at him unintentionally. I agree with you about him. I really liked watching Bill Cullen. He was fun to watch! He was smart, he had a good sense of humor, he was a charming host and panelist, and he was handsome when he was young.

The announcer stated at the start of the program, "let's meet our award-winning panel". I wonder what award this panel ever won. I am curious to know.

Two Emmys had been won when this aired. Another was forthcoming.
good thing there were more people than victor borge and the octopus fisherman, they'd have never finished the show.
Why do the challengers sometimes just sit silently and stare at the panel after a question is put to them? I understand that they often had a hard time hearing the questions put by the panel, but like the Octopus man here he just stares blankly at them even after John reiterates the question.Are they trying to run out the clock to win more money?

Borge was a comedic genius.
Ugh, don't find him funny at all. He's as silly as a 3rd grade school girl. Tried to watch him once and I'm thinking he was seated at a piano. He had a laugh track going at full blast. He was so silly that I gave up after about three minutes.
@@jerrylee8261 I saw him live and he kept an audience of 3000 in stitches for two hours including intermission when we were still laughing at what he'd done in the first half. He was hands down the funniest entertainer I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of them.

@@jerrylee8261 Believe it or not, its true which is why his shows sold out whenever announced and we were lucky to get tickets. As was mentioned on WML, when he announced a one man show on Broadway his advances were larger than R&H musicals, unmatched for a one man show. A sense of humor is a very individual thing but I am afraid in this instance you're vastly outnumbered.

The panel wants to have it both ways: first Arlene insists that John should count all animal limbs as "legs" (and not split hairs), but at the end, when they fail to guess, they suddenly insist on the opposite: an octopus has "arms" not "legs". You either count all animal limbs as legs, or you don't.

I find him very funny when he performed his one-man show. In this format, he was horrendous. I had some minor dental procedures done today. They were preferable to watching Borge when it was his turn to question.

I’m sorry, but I found Victor Borge (and Groucho Marx when he was a contestant) annoying on this program. There was too much joking and not enough asking questions, which wasted a lot of time.

23:23 shows an aircraft that didn't exist in 1956. Just curious as to when this was broadcast (presumably in monochrome along with the advertisements). I can't think of a twin engined jet aircraft like that until the F-17 which first took flight in 1974. Would anyone be able to illuminate when this was rebroadcast and recorded?
I slowed it down to take a look at that myself. Curious.
It looks like a snippet of the film featuring jet aircraft along with a recitation of the poem 'High Flight' that many TV stations would show at sign-off. This portion of the show does not have the GameShow network watermark, so it may have been recorded from air at some point. I do not know why it would run before the closing credits, though. Maybe a USAF recruiting advertisement?

In my not-so-humble opinion, Wally Cox was, by far, the most irritating guest panellist, but Victor Borge runs a close second. And, as has been pointed out, both were very funny in the right situation, but not here - neither of them had a clue as to what they were doing, and simply wasted time trying for laughs.
That being said, I can't recall any other guest panellists who were irritating. Groucho wasted a certain amount of time, but he was charming & genuinely funny.
I agree. Victor Borge did nothing but waste time as a panelist in an attempt to be funny and he wasn't particularly funny for all of the time he spent getting nowhere. Too bad, because on the stage with a piano he was nothing short of hilarious. I note that Groucho Marx was another lousy panelist, but his efforts at humor were hystercally funny on WML, even if he destroyed the show in the process.
Victor, Wally, Groucho were all terribly annoying, in different ways. Adored Wally when he was the mystery guest, though.
Victor Borge was NEVER funny. Henry Morgan the same...no wit, no humor, zero entertainment.
