The Temple Theater of Monte San Nicola in Pietravairano, in the province of Caserta, is one of the most beautiful and rare examples of temple-theater type installations. At a height of 410 meters, an ancient sanctuary was identified consisting of a temple and a theater, located on two terraces at different heights, whose scenography is accentuated even more by the extraordinary panorama. On the upper terrace we find the temple, a rectangular building consisting of an antechamber that allows access to three very similar rooms where, probably, the statues of the deities worshiped in this place were located. Of the theater, located about twenty meters below, the semicircular cavea, obtained by exploiting the natural slope of the hill, and the scaena (the structure where the scenography was represented) located along the southern edge of the terrace, preserved by four turrets. We can say that this construction is the perfect synthesis between the religious spirit, represented by the temple that stood on top of the theater, and the spirit of beauty, represented by the panorama and theatrical performances. A philosophy that certainly reflects the very strong cultural influences of Magna Graecia. The road to reach it is a bit challenging, as you have to go up the hill on foot along not very comfortable paths.

Pretty disappointing that in all of that footage, it never occurred to the photographer to show us what the view that spectators would’ve had from that theater. 🙄 Seems like a pretty obvious idea to me, but…

I respect your opinion, but my film shows many scenes both of the path to get up to the theater and of what you see all around. Other scenes of the landscape seen from the theater were shot with the drone to better show its beauty and finally if you really wanted the view that the spectators would have had from the theater, perhaps you did not watch the video carefully at the 1.15 minute mark and at the 1.50 minute mark.
