Is There A Better Driving Experience Than The MGF?

  • Only a week ago I went off for the day to collect an MG ZS 180, where my mate ‪@Mr_Boaty‬drove my 45 diesel on the return journey of over 120 miles, he then returned the car me and by this point was convinced that he needed a Rover 45 diesel for everyday use. Then a simple conversation occurred where the idea of a swap happened, and I could have an MGF as my own. It was a short conversation.

    I remember the first day I got my MGF. I felt the same too. I have just sold mine after 15 years and 230,000Klm, years of hillclimbs and club level circuit racing, I got bigger brakes, poly bushes and a TT exhaust. It has been all over south east Queensland, northern New South Wales and Perth to Albany in Western Australia. I now have a MGTF 160 with more power, Bilstien shocks, poly bushes and a trick ECU to give me 180HP. Here in Australia, we do it backwards, top down all winter and top up in summer from 9am to 4pm. You will love your time in this car. I still hillclimb the MGTF (jellybean) and I have just turned 78. As you have found out, they make you smile.

    I completely understand your joy that shone through in this video.
    My midlife crisis started very early at 21 with a couple of Triumph Spitfires , fabulous looking cars. Then a Midget which was extremely forgettable.
    Left the 2 seaters for a few years , then got in to FIAT X1/9's of which I had 19 (yep nineteen!) over 8 years.
    Had a break again then reignited the midlife crisis at an appropriate age of 50 with a FIAT Barchetta which stayed with me for 6 years and I enjoyed every minute of the gorgeous looking, well proportioned car but I yearned the mid engine fun the X1/9's brought.
    An MG TF came up for sale locally, I checked it out and on the test drive knew this is what I needed again in my life.
    2 years on and love it more and more. The handling, the responsiveness, the K-series noise right behind your ears , the whole package is just spot on.
    Enjoy it Paul 👍

      Thank you, Neil. I think the only car that might be just as good would be the Lotus Elise, but then they're never available.

    • @neilwalsh4058
      @neilwalsh4058 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@ProjectNigel Sure they are , but now the Elise is the toy of the rich boys. You can have 10 to 15 good MGF/TF's for the price of an Elise too and you'd still have a K-series pushing it along.
      Go sensible, pocket the cash and get a Longbridge Lamborghini as you called it instead 👍

    Congrats on the MG F acquisition! In my personal opinion its the best car MGR ever made. Absolute fabulous, I've owned 5 of them now!
    In fact owning so many is how I ended up working at DMGRS! I've still got one now, an Amaranth VVC and there's no chance im letting it go!
    Pro-tip with those pre-'98 Fs. They have a standard Rover airbox which is honestly too small for the 1.8, after '98 they replace it with a larger one and then go even bigger for the VVC. It's one if the few times I've seen an open cone filter improve the performance of a car, so I'd recommend that. Sounds good too!
    Oh and if you want to stay warm at night you need one of the wind deflectors. It makes a massive difference, though im not a fan myself. I've got several in my garage if you want me to send one up!

    That's a nice little MGF - little is what makes them great. I had an s type before this and I prefer the experience driving the MGF. Every time I got the Jag going it felt dangerous - the MFG just feels great at any speed. I got mine a month or so ago - it's a bit hard on the potholes and I have mine booked in to replace all the hydragas spheres with re-gassed units. I'm going to post a video after it's done (in april) and report back on how much difference it makes. I can't find a video on anybody who has done that and reported on it. Enjoy your drive :)

    As per a request from yesterday, I have continued to watch the actual video. I usually spend the duration of the film writing my comment but today I've resolved to actually watch to the end. What a load of nonsense 🤣🤣🤣 Will you be one of those proper MG men who wear imitation flying jackets, a thick white scarf, a tweed cap and winter driving gloves as they drive around with the roof down when it would be more sensible to have it up? I used to have a convertible car and in the first year of ownership I was one of those roof down at every opportunity people but after a while it seemed a bit daft to be so cold so often. So I bought a motorbike for that and only put the roof down when I wouldn't get chilly. I concur that roof down at night is a special joy, I remember driving from Biarritz to somewhere a couple of hours away on a very lovely summers evening with the roof down. The trouble with a cabriolet, which is what mine was called, is in the UK I felt like a bit of a berk with the roof down but then it wasn't a little sporty thing like this. Did MG do a wind deflector thing for behind the seats? They make a huge difference when it's a bit parky. If only they had made a diesel MGF, what could have been...

    • @ProjectNigel
      @ProjectNigel  6 месяцев назад +1

      Yes I am very tempted to wear a scarf and spectacles, I will probably style my mustache too. Very tempted, but not tempted enough, unless it was a joke.

      @@ProjectNigelI think you should, there’s a certain raffishness about an MG so there must be some element of disappointment when an MG pulls up and a normal bloke gets out. However if a Leslie Phillips type character gets out, an abundance of joy and delight would rain down on everyone. Ding dong.

    If you pour your oil out of the big bottle by holding it flat, you don't get the glugs that go where they shouldn't. Also if you need to empty a two litre bottle of pop quickly, twirl it around so the liquid inside spins. #science

    What would you do if your house was the chosen one for the local bird community? I have nothing against birds, I think I rather like them, some of them are extremely beautiful, some are rather drab but still cute in their own way. I like the noise they make, it's a lovely natural sound that at the moment means that spring is almost here. But there are downsides, they don't use toilets like people or litter trays like cats or self contained poo units like dogs which means there's rather a lot of mess and small birds attract big birds who steal all their food, ultimately resulting in a bird like a seagull that will steal human food. maybe even small humans. So on balance I think I would prefer the birds to live on top of someone else's house.
