Detectors were detecting ONLY written symbols, not taped items. Helly was able to bring her resignation tape without alarms going off. They found a loophole in the system and could use it later in season 2
Hmm, not sure you would even need that explanation. Seemed clear they did not care if she walked out with that. Given now that we know she is a member of the family, there was never really any chance she was going to accept that resignation from her innie. For me an interesting aspect is that it doesn't appear that there is some technology that has ever caught someone that we have seen on screen. It's always another human that thinks there is some magic thing that'll detect it. Although I guess we did get some indication from Adam Scott that may have happened to him before. But my point stands we have not seen it on screen actually detect anything
6:45 "if petey was severed, he would have no idea what the cubist art movement was." Though I agree that Petey was already reintegrated, I'm not sure about that reasoning. They have knowledge of many outside things. Take, for instance, Dylan's fantasies about muscle shows and milfs. Though neither exist down there, Dylan has the general cultural knowledge to know what those are. It seems as though Lumon erases a person's lived experiences, and also any information that would interfere with their propaganda, but that's it. So they erase all religion in order to replace it was Keir, but they don't erase the state of Delaware.
Mark talking to Petey in his basement is an interesting conversation imo. When Mark says I’m not interested in being unsevered with Petey responding with that’s not a thing - It’s reintegration! “Right! Well it’s helping me” Says Mark with Petey then going “What if that help is you murdering people 8 hours a day, & you don’t even know it” Mark responds with “What like chained up or some shit?” He then mentions that he found a department down there where ‘you don’t get to leave’ Mark responds with sure none of us get to leave? He then says no, like you really don’t get to leave as in theyre down their right now” 😮 Unreal lol
Hey guys, about that Code Detector: Theory 1: If it actually exists, does it detect digital codes? Because Helly R. leaves with a CD or DVD in her hand, after she threatened to cut her fingers off. They could've manually disabled the Code Detector for that moment, but, if the Code Detector just doesn't detect digital codes, then it would've been possible for Petey to smuggle out the Tape, without triggering it. Theory 2: The Code-Detector is actually not in the elevator. The Elevator just triggers their brain-implant, which then analyzes the brain activity and finds out, if the person smuggling knows he is smuggling something. Which would mean, as long as the person smuggling something doesn't know their smuggling something, they can get anything out and into the office. It just has to be someone else putting it into their pocket without their knowledge. Theory 3: The Code-Detector is total bullshit. Lumon just knows that new Employees will try to smuggle out info in their first few days they're in there. So they surveil them very closely and trigger the Code-Detector manually, to make them believe the detector is actually catching it all. Just some thoughts!
I had the same thoughts as #1 and #3. I hadn’t thought about #2 but it’s plausible. Also, I find the phrase “code detector” rather confusing and awkward and ambiguous. Like…. what exactly is a “code” in this context? My first thought is that it really is about information encoded in some way. The fact that they work with pure numbers all day without understanding them makes it seem like there’s a higher level process at work and they really are just links in a chain, decoding (selecting from the stream) and re-encoding (putting the numbers into boxes.) So it could be that they really do have “code detectors” to protect this project, but that written language (at least English?) can also be interpreted as clear-text, the simplest code of them all (aka no code.) Also fyi, that tape recorder would encode and store his voice as an analog, not digital, signal. On the magnetic tape it’s encoded as changes in field power (strength of the magnetic field) over time. So to actually “read” the tape in the elevator requires technology that doesn’t exist. You’d have to be able to scan the tape linearly, even as it is coiled tightly in hundreds (thousands?) of layers around the spool. You’d have to be able to precisely detect the strength of the field on the layer currently being scanned, and not the one above it or below or 100 layers away from it. And what are you using to scan it? You’d need a powerful magnetic field in the elevator that could be affected by the minute differences in field strength on the layers of tape. To have that kind of fidelity would probably require a magnetic field that would garble the signal stored on the tape itself. Now I know this show is science fiction, but good science fiction only makes you drop your disbelief on a few key aspects of reality. The rest of the time it needs to be self-consistent in that universe, or they are just making up shit as they go along. (I’m looking at you LOST 😡) So I don’t think they actually have a detector that can scan a magnetic cassette tape. Just my opinion though. 🤷♀️
The monkey experiment you mentioned is a thought experiment, not an actual experiment. It's in the same category as "if you give a monkey a typewriter..." ~
I would like someone to explain or hypothesize on the varied distribution of incongruous technology. We have internet, flip phones, mind severance 'chips' -- along with 80s cassette tape recorders and 70s cars with arm-shifting gearshifts on the steering column. Is there some kind of Lumen controlled tech suppression? Of course, I'm impressed with Petey's cell phone that keeps it's charge for over a week.
Devon is DEFINITELY not Marks sister, every convo between them is like, remember how were siblings or remember when we were kids or gee I'm your sister. At first I thought it was just TV show exposition, but it's overboard. And the fact that she's the only one that seems normal among Rick(N.), Pat(N.), Rebeck(A.), and all the rest of the clearly mind controlled/wiped/severed crew
Great discussion and theories. A lot of stuff I had never considered in this. These theory videos are keeping me alive until season 2. I am watching the show for the 4th time now and I just cannot wait for season 2. I'm actually hoping its just one episode per week so that we can appreciate the show until we hopefully get a season 3.
I’ve heard that something’s in the soap. Lumon began as a topical pharmaceutical company and soap is technically a topical. The handbook also reminds employees to frequently wash their hands. I think the technology doesn’t work (or maybe doesn’t work as well) without the Lumon topicals. I’m really interested to see what Lumon was like before the chips invention. What the hell are they putting in the salve that supposedly helped soldiers during the Civil War?
Re: the Code Detectors; I just think about all the tech that doesn’t really work as advertised. Bing Ai telling people to put glue on their pizza or the millions of weird flubs autocorrect has caused on my phone to Boeing’s planes that fall apart in midair. Tech companies aren’t actually that reliable. The TSA is basically theater and does very little to stop actual weapons from getting through airports. Cops have an insignificant effect on property crime and close very few actual cases. In reality, big businesses and institutions are mostly incompetent and run with an acceptable level of failure that only bites them when it fails spectacularly! I think the code detector exists but it’s woefully inadequate. Peggy got her child-code through in The Lexington Letter. But clothing stores have to sell tag-less suits specifically for the Severed.

"They are all given mundane calming tasks." Calming? Mundane? Did...did you watch the show?
@@wawawuu1514 Finding the numbers that make you feel things....is hours of mundane. Learning to manage emotions as they arise because of the numbers....calming or managing contentedness lest you get swept away by the feelings of the numbers. I do agree that the original Kier may have had more pure intentions. But if you want to be able to take your consciousness and put it in another person....like I believe is happening with Helly's dad, then you need a consciousness that is fragmented and easy to imprint over. The best mind to try to control is one that already fragments when stressed. There seems to be an element of personal suffering and trauma in the show.

Calming?
I think Petey might have known that he is a chip, like all the severed staff. To quote Cobel "This IS Petey."
Take a shot when one of the hosts says "like"...
If they know what eels are, I don't know why they wouldn't know what Cubism is. Mark S. questioning him as to how he knows what it is makes me think Mark knows what it is and is jesting that Petey is too low brow to know.
Making us wait til January 2025 is CRUEL!!! This video is already 1yo, so 18months between seasons! it's already finished production, what is the extra 5 months about??? I guess that's why people like me watch old videos... thanks
Love the video, but could we not do the “mmmmm, mmmmmm” in future episodes?
Very distracting/annoying.
Thanks
