The "land of California" line is used as metaphor. People in those days spoke of California as a fabled land of gold and opportunity almost like a paradise where life was easy and riches would abound for all who came. I know it doesn't come easy-keep up the good work.
@@shaunw9270 I enjoy what you're doing. Been playing--will always play--so good for the Soul. (Bragging rights: I have the autographs of Bukka White and Furry Lewis. (I'm old.) Keep it going. Catch you on the turn around.
Fantastic work being done here by Mr. Phillips as he works to preserve and share his passion for the history of the blues in America - but even more impressive is the fact that he brings it all to life with this wonderful guitar playing and unique vocals - wow - we need more people like this guy.
In 50 years or so, your legacy should and hopefully will be the GREAT bluesman of the 2010s and 2020s. I would bet u write songs and I sure would like to hear them.
Besides California being "the land of dreams," there's an old blues joke here in Chicago. When somebody asks where you're from you answer, "California. California and 35th Street." Actually, California Avenue and Roosevelt Road are notoriously close to Maxwell Street, Chicago's home of the street blues back in the day. Love what you're doing, man!
Minor disagreement. I grew up in Chicago and my grandfather would take me to the site of the old Maxwell Street Market and my great grandfather was City Sealer in Chicago in the 1920s, the guy that issued licenses to street vendors like the ones that worked the Maxwell Street Market. While Roosevelt Road does run near that site, California Avenue is significantly West of there.
Thank you very much. You are a superb historian. And an outstanding musician. I am disabled. and spend large blocks of time in bed.Your wonderful videos make life bearable. Respectfully..
Great sound! I always took Johnson's lyric to mean that he planned to crisscross the country. This is one of the first of his songs I learned when I got the complete RJ collection 25 or so years ago. I never interpreted this any other way, especially since Des Moines could be the last turn on a tour from Cali to Chicago.
Your music has came acrosses You tube many times , and I passed you By I just lissened to cross roads and now this one . All I can say is you Aint Bad for a white Boy not bad attall ..
Brother man, I so look forward to your video releases! Blown away by your faithful interpretations of these blues classics. They’re spot-on without being overly technical. You’ve clearly spent time listening and internalizing the masters as well as making the music your own with your fantastic playing and singing. I envy the trees in your videos a little because they seem to be whispering, “can’t you hear the wind howl?” :)
I'm watching your videos over and and over and over again and I can't even tell how much I have watched in an hour you did a very good job in every cover well done!
Sir, you truly are a great bluesman. New to finding you but glad I did. Keep the great work coming as it is a pleasure to watch and listen to you play. Bravo, sir... bravo.
Ay very nice man , love the sound from this guitar 😀 The father from a friend just contacted me that he has an old guitar laying around and didnt know what kind of guitar it is. At least 50 years old he tells me. I did some research and found out its probably an antique parlor guitar. And that brought me to your videos. Funny enough this is exactly the kind of music i like to play 😋 It sound very old school on this guitar, totally different then my other acoustic guitars Ive got. Nice playing, Im gonna listen to more videos for sure ! Thnx for uploading. Greetings from Holland.

@Dyslexic Lives Mattress There's a few Dames I'd say, other than that...
Always thought it was “back from the land of California to my sweet home Chicago”
Funny, cause now it's the opposite.
Now, any riches you have will quickly leave you due to the exorbitant taxes.
There's something so eerie yet intriguing and hypnotic about delta blues
No better place to play or listen to the Blues than in the open air. Can't explain how much I love this :)
In the middle of the woods in true blues style!!
Damn....that is a sweet guitar.

Aaaa is a!
Thanx for keeping Robert Johnson’s songs alive and well.
Are you sure you don’t have some hell hounds waiting for you?... Great rendition!
this is great
Robert Johnson was singing about coming "back FROM the land of California to Sweet Home Chicago"
no, he was from mississippi and meant from mississippi, it was a metaphor as cali is the “land of gold” meaning chicago was a golden place
Correct Bob. I had been listening to Robert for years before I got that because he does say "to" a few times. But that is the correct explanation.
In 50 years or so, your legacy should and hopefully will be the GREAT bluesman of the 2010s and 2020s. I would bet u write songs and I sure would like to hear them.
Love what you're doing. The woods, the blues, a guitar, that's heaven!
