In this video Canadian Guitarist/producer Dean Wolfe reacts to Dutch symphonic metal band Epica and Skeleton Key (2021).
A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

Epica has very prog songs as well, so if you want to explore that side of them I would suggest the Kingdom of Heaven series, in 3 parts, but perhaps start with the standalone songs The Holographic Principle: A Profound Understanding of Reality: ruclips.net/video/CYlQJ_t2iks/видео.html
    or Consign To Oblivion: ruclips.net/video/dkqyyUTCMUQ/видео.html
Consign to Oblivion is about as heavy as Epica gets so be prepared for growls, but composition and melodies are gorgeous.
The Kingdom of Heaven series, especially parts 1 and 3, are considered their very best work by many fans.
Shorter songs that I personally consider peak Epica:
    Unleashed
    Chasing The Dragon
    Fools of Damnation
    Essence of Silence
    Design Your Universe
    The Divine Conspiracy
    Abyss Of Time
    Omega Sovereign of The Sunspheres
    The Code of Life
Tides of Time(my favourite ballad from any band, ever)
    Rivers
    The Second Stone
    In All Conscience
    Universal Death Squad(very unique sound)
    Once Upon A Nightmare
For a peek at the very beginning:
The Phantom Agony(both these are old songs, Simone was like 17)
    Cry For The Moon
For live performances go with their OFFICIAL LIVE videos, or the recordings from Retrospect, Zenit or Omega Alive. Epica demands good sound mix to catch it all, and these shows have the best.
Besides these I really struggle with thinking of a bad Epica song, they are either good enough to be classics for other bands or straight up mindblowing. Their melodies are intricate and beautiful, riffs chunky and delicious, and the contrast between Simones soaring lyrical soprano and Marks thunderous growl is just pure ear candy.
Simone has a large part in writing lyrics and the vocal lines, and I swear she has a endless supply of beauty to draw from somewhere inside that gorgeous red head. Mark, growler and rythm guitarist does a large part of the composing, with Coen, the keyboard player helping with choral lines and orchestration.
Any questions, ask away; I can help you with links to good versions to react to and such. Epica is my musical home and I find it truly sad that not more people are familiar with their music. There's so much to gain from listening to this band.

Oh, and the Omega Alive performance of Kingdom of Heaven Part 3 is in my and many other peoples eyes the current peak of Symphonic Metal. It's a mindblowing song, and mindblowing performance. Epica will celebrate 20 years next year, I can't wait to see what they come up with.

Nice reaction Epica is an awesome band one of the best out there, they have a lot of great songs. You should check the Consign to Oblivion live at Zenith, Unleashed live at retrospect, Design Your Universe live at retrospect😉🤘🏻

Hello Dean, welcome to the world of Epica!
I hope you're going to react to much much more. This is not a band with just 3-4 big hits. They have over 100 songs on 8 studio albums and you can easily listen to a dozen (or two dozens) in one go and not get bored.
This band is phenomenal, the best musical discovery of my life. 4 out of 6 Epica members have degree in music and you can really tell! You have no idea what you've just discovered and what a beautiful journey lies ahead of you :)
If you want something more progressive, most people will recommend "Kingdom of Heaven" (there are 3 songs with this name, from part 1 to part 3) but this time I would suggest another longer epic masterpiece from Epica: The Holographic Principle - A Profound Understanding of Reality (+ lyrics). Almost no one reacts to it, but it's a great music!
You mentioned "Consign to Oblivion", that's another masterpiece with lots of growls, not for everyone, but you obviously don't mind heavier music.
If you want something a bit shorter, try either The Essence Of Silence (OFFICIAL LIVE VIDEO)
or Universal Death Squad (OFFICIAL LYRIC VIDEO)

Epica took their name from the sixth album of USA Symphonic metal band Kamelot (From Tampa, Florida). The band also has another connection in that Simone Simons' husband, Oliver Palotai, plays keyboards for Kamelot.

They prog mixing death metal and symphonic metal also I like them better then nightwish for one reason consistency you know what your getting always same line up for years now, Used to love Nightwish more but 3 singers left now I am done with supporting them plus Tuomas got some anger issues and it comes through the music. Epica always happy even dark songs exist but albums always end with a hope for the future.
