Cracking day on the water mate looks like it’s going to turn into a great fishery over the years to come vic fisheries are doing a great job with the stocking cheers mate
Prob hall of fame sort of stuff. Something for the rest of us to aspire too. And yeah the guys I deal with at the VFA are wrapped with how well its coming along. We need more spots to target yellas, cod and bass within an hour of Melbourne
how good is this, great to see this place thriving right on the footsteps of suburbia. It used to be a Serbian Snapper paradise back in the 90's with the odd eel and redfin, but these native stockings takes it to another level. Awesome entertainment, thanks for making this.
Thanks so much, yeah it sure has improved so much in recent years. The volume of reddies have declined with the natives I think, but it has been fishing well
I’ve been meaning to go to melton for ages, hoping to get up there in the next few weeks. It is definitely becoming a really awesome native fishery, as well as Rocklands Res. Awesome video mate, well done unpacking to location and getting onto some fish. Keep up the good work!
Would be good to see a video of you loading the kayak on at home, unloading the kayak at the fishing destination and then loading it back onto your car???
Thanks !! I have several detailed vids of how this is done in the FishingMad members area ( with the PA and Lynx ). over the coming weeks I'm travelling to some spots so might sneak that in if I can.
I see your doing you're best to lose another combo 😂😂😂 why don't you use the lock in rod holders to stop the rod pull. Another lovely vid mate and great to see you got your kids involved into fishing, more kids should learn these skills
LOL Yeah its a mission at the moment not to lose another rod, but i just hate using rod leashes. These rod holders are quite deep. Glad you enjoyed the vid and its awesome to see kids off the devices out fishing.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the vid. No I didn't see the cod being caught on the Murray that doesn't sound to good. Did someone have a video of it or a newspaper article
Yeah it can be a tough spot. We do vids like this to try and share techniques to help others. I have also done vids here in the past catching some really nice size redfin on soft plastics.
100% agreed. Im part of the new Vic Fishers Board and have flagged this as an area that needs improvement to the Melton council and the VFA. Cant believe the volume of littering and weird stuff down there at times. My last trip a bloke drove his 4wd into the res near clakes road. I think some security cameras, scattered bins, proper parking, picnic tables, would be a good starting point.
Get down there a fair bit since they took about 8 cars from the water and bank but now i see 4 or 5 more back in since waters dropped to 50 % but fish refuse to bite . That's fishing tho won't get a line in til sept 2024 @@fishingmad
I fished there only once in hope of redfin but didn't catch anything. Obviously wasn't my day. What shocked me is how much rubbish the locals have been dumping by the banks. The rubbish was typical of campers and fishermen. The area worst affected is shown in this drone footage at the end of the video where car trail leads to water. It felt like a 4th world country. Otherwise very nice scenery and cliffs. Good fishing video - thank you.
Hey Alen, I'm looking at upgrading my main setup I've never spent over $300 on a combo, I know I want a 7 foot ish rod and in 2-4 or similar weight with a 2500 or 3000 size reel. I will be mainly flicking soft plastics for pinkies and flathead and I'm thinking of spending about $600 on the combo do you have any recommendations for me or brands to look at? cheers mate I love you're videos they've helped me alot and goten me back into fishing.
Next weeks vid, is all about a mid range combo that would be perfect and below $600. I've been using it to catch snapper and all sorts. The product is officially released in a few days so I cant say anything just yet. Otherwise. I've always rated rod/reel combos like zodias/vanford, and TB black combos. Keep an out out for specials as you see really big discounts on the big brands gear reguarly.
Great video Alan like alway How far behind your boat do you have the lure trolling? And also when you were on your mates boat trolling, do you know a rough speed you troll on the size 3 stumpys? Thank you
We troll on the kayak and boat at a very slow speed, fast enough that you can see the rod tip wobbling. We usually put the lures 20-30 meters behind us which allows it to get down to a great depth. I hope that helps
Overheads can be great for trolling, just free spool to let out some line, then click them into gear. Plus they are a tad heavier which is handy when chasing yellas and cod. I use spin rods the majority of time.
May i ask which lure you are using for kayak trolling? I tried few but neither only floating on top, not right speed to let it dive in or it sinks to the bottom and hook the tree branches. Thanks
I still have it but rarely use it, I really enjoy paddling and the exercise component of kayak fishing and felt like the trolling motor really took away that side of it and I feel a lot more in control peddling when I catch a fish. Thanks for watching !!
Budgets vary so greatly for peddle based kayaks. Some of the entry level pedal kayaks aren't very durable or stable. You cant past a hobie outback or pro angler but they are expensive. Many look to places like marketplace to try and pickup a bargain. Id always encourage people to wait and save a little bit more as a good peddle kayak will last you many years, be safe and give you hands free fishing
I use jig heads 1/12 and 1/8. 3 inch and 4 inch plastics work awesome, so do things like 7 inch turtlebacks. Fish as close or in the stricture and you'll catch plenty. Let me know if you need a couple of links to vids we have already filmed there
Lots and lots of small ones there. I wreckon 9 out of 10 fish there are under 40cm and then you have odd occasions where you land a few big ones. Ive got the odd 3-6kg fish there before. Its an awesome spot but can be really frustrating one too.
Yeah its a real strange situation at melton res. Access for boats is owned by the local ski club although I regularly see small boats and skis launching from Clarkes road. I know its been on the raider by council and the VFA so its probably one that will evolve over time
Yes, 100% you can. In this vid I did catch and release of all the native fish as we would love to see the Murray Cod and Yellowbelly grow to bigger sizes. Always just keep an eye on any algae outbreaks but its been pretty good.
Land based fishing can be excellent here ive caught redfin, carp, eps, yellowbelly and the odd cod land based, however there is a massive volume of litter left regularly in the area which can make it an unpleasant spot. For kids follow the VFA stocking program as local lakes like navan park and pykes get stocked with trout and natives
Cracking day on the water mate looks like it’s going to turn into a great fishery over the years to come vic fisheries are doing a great job with the stocking cheers mate
That place has been my 2nd home this summer 😅 I've managed 3 solid Cod, at least 40 Yellas and the reddies are always around too!
Yes very true mate. So great to see you doing so well and catching plenty. Your 20 yellas there was a very special moment.
@@fishingmad I don't think I'll ever beat that, was a bloody awesome day. You're spot on that VFA has done some bloody great work with the place.
Prob hall of fame sort of stuff. Something for the rest of us to aspire too. And yeah the guys I deal with at the VFA are wrapped with how well its coming along. We need more spots to target yellas, cod and bass within an hour of Melbourne
The stump jumper really doesn’t seem to fail providing fish does it
Agreed it rarely lets you down and is just excellent value. A lure around $10 that catches plenty
Always ice to see a new video from Allan
Thank you !! Enjoy the vid

Finally Melton has something positive to be known by :). Joking, well kind of. How about those Yellas! AFL night game Sherrins
Awesome video Alan, so diverse. Congratulations.
Thanks so much !! Glad you enjoyed it
Wow how cool the fishing is awsome thanks Vic Fisheries , VFA.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed the vid. No I didn't see the cod being caught on the Murray that doesn't sound to good. Did someone have a video of it or a newspaper article
@@fishingmad I have a RUclips short maybe 3 shorts ago
Awsome mate you can then pick where to use it on your fishing destinations, good to know you still have it.
Melton is actually a rather tough customer...but I guess you might know your stuff!
Yeah it can be a tough spot. We do vids like this to try and share techniques to help others. I have also done vids here in the past catching some really nice size redfin on soft plastics.
Fisheries and the council need to spend some of our money to clean up the joint and improve access espeically for those that don't own aboat or kayak!

I was just thinking about this place.
Alan, where is a good spot to launch a Kayak at Melton reservoir? It looks a bit tricky...😮
End of Clarkes road

I covered all the lures we used in the vid, but mainly using stump jumpers in size 2 and 3
Pikes creek been overflowing plenty
Thats good, ive been hanging to get back there soon,
I'm in bacchus marsh. Would be good to catch up for a fish when you do.
Hey Al forgot to ask what ever happened to your electric fully setup
I still have it but rarely use it, I really enjoy paddling and the exercise component of kayak fishing and felt like the trolling motor really took away that side of it and I feel a lot more in control peddling when I catch a fish. Thanks for watching !!
Try the Yarra metre plus
Yeah very true, ive seen some big fish pulled from there
What lures or soft plastics do you use at the weir
Its all covered in the vid, during the catches and at the end on the boat. Cheers
For someone wanting to upgrade from a paddle kayak what would you recommend
Cheers johno 👍

Can you get access to all the banks by foot?
You can access a big stretch of the reservoir by foot, clarkes road
@@fishingmad excellent thankyou! I'd like to try some blades cast from the bank, is it safe to park at that road? Is that where people launch from?
Can you get a tinny in there or just kyack only
Is there some accessible spots land based or best to access via kayak
Yes of Clarke's road
Are you allowed to put a side console fishing boat on this res
ill have to find out. I see all sorts of boats, skis and yaks down there but would need to confirm.
Apparently You can only put boats in if your a member of the ski club and fishing club
Hi fishing mad got many tips for me fishing on my kayak at port melbourne polls

No probs
This is fucken awesome i didnt know you could catch murray cod in melton, what lure are you using?
They were stocked in here a few years ago and starting to flourish. I did run through all the lures at the end but mainly used stump jumpers
Any good landbased spots there?
Yep, 100% heaps of land based spots. I usually walk the banks flicking plastics and lures
Wish they would clean this area. There're stolen cars dumped literally everywhere, even driven into the river.
Agreed, the place could be so much better if properly maintained.
Can't afford to clean it mate, Dictator Dan spent all our money on CoVID-19 vaccines.

would eat anything from there before basa fillets or farmed salmon from the northern hemisphere.
By the comments, I’m guessing it’s not a great spot to take kids land-based fishing? Thanks
