- In this video I hand load some bullets for the 1873 Springfield Trapdoor from a recent video. I put 70 grains of compressed black powder under a 405 grain bullet I cast.. and lubed with home made lube. All of it squished into a 45-70 govt casing.

Thanks for the video and showing how you do it. Since it's warming up I'm going to start shooting my Shiloh sharps 4570. I'm going to start reloading my own oh, I bought a hundred rounds of pre-made lead 405 but they're lubricated for smokeless and I'm going to be using black powder so I've got to melt out the lube before I shoot them and relube them with black powder lube. I bought the lead before I found my mold so I've got to shoot these up before I start making more lead. Have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry!
Man that sounds fun!! I just molded up some 405’s for a trapdoor I salvaged. My next range day I will be firing it for the first time.
I loaded up the shells with Goex, but that gun is why I went back to making my own BP.
I’m going to re-prime some spent primers. Then I can say, “I remade these primers, my black powder and they are launching bullets I molded slathered in my own lube.” Just a personal sense of accomplishment, I suppose. Either way…I’m stoked to do it!
@@mcschneiveoutdoors3681 Amen brother I haven't found a time yet but I'm also going to try repriming my primers I'm not sure how you're trying to do it but I'm going to try a cap from a cap gun a toy cap gun sprinkle powder 4 f is what I'm thinking and then lock that in with another cap and see what that gets me. It's just testing that's all it is I'm hoping it's going to work for my pistols in my rifle shells. Have a great day and stay safe and keep your powder dry! I’ve done the primers before and percussion caps. I’ve had success with the caps, but..for ME.. I’ve found better success with Prime-All in both. Yes, it’s corrosive, but I always clean my guns when I shoot regular ammo. So an “immediate” clean isn’t anything I do different.

Hey man, I am writing about some success I had today with both 12 gauge slugs (7/8 oz) and pumpkin balls. I received an order from Ballistic Products of the "078 Lightning 7/8oz 12ga wad" and both the slugs and roundball fit great in these wads. I was able to make a pie-plate sized group at 30 yards using my home made black powder with a 3.4 cc scoop, which is around 50-55 grains. The recoil was minimal and they are a pleasure to shoot. I'm so glad I finally have an accurate-enough large projectile for potential short-range deer hunting, although I wish it was more "primitive." Another thing is that my new powder is burning the plastic shells, leaving holes in them, so now I want some of those brass shells....

And yeah… BP chews through the plastic bulls.
Keep in mind: the brass shells take large pistol primers. They CAN be drilled out to accept 209’s… but it ain’t the best. Lemme know if you have success with that too.

@@mcschneiveoutdoors3681 thanks! Yeah I've seen those Dave Canterbury vids of him drilling out brass shells for 209 primer. Why the heck do they make them only for large pistol primers? I guess then you only need one type of primer....but large pistol primers are probably difficult to acquire...
@@jeffersoncarlisle3125 scarce as hair lice on a frog. I had a couple of thousand before this “pandemic”. I’m down to about 900 or so now. So I learnt how to remake them using prime-all.
I'm curious. Was there a reason for using that method of seating the bullet versus a seating die in the press? Thanks for any insight. I have shot blackpowder for decades, but never cartridges. Just trying to avoid potential problems.
Sure was. I don't have a bullet seating die for .45-70. I have a mixture of stuff.
I have Lee loaders for everything. Love them. On the cartridges that I have regular die sets AND Loaders for....I use the Loader more often than not.

@@mcschneiveoutdoors3681 Ha! Yeah...I had that feeling recently when putting a light charge behind a 12 ga pumpkin ball. I was wondering about the pressure. That new trapdoor is sweet. I love the ejection! Also nice rig with the pistol and belt loops!

And I appreciate the compliments. I got the rifle in a trade. Guy was gonna make a wall hanger out it. It was covered in rust and looked bad.
After getting the cancer off and tearing it down to its little parts it didn’t look bad. Bore looks awesome. Seems sound and fit as a fiddle. So blued it back up and am gonna give it a shot, well… 16 shots cuz that’s what I loaded up!
I acquired some factory loads. So I tore them down, carefully decapped them, annealed the brass and that’s where the videos starts.
I’ll make sure to record the firing. I’m gonna shoot those .44 black powders out of the Marlin 1894 carbine.
@@mcschneiveoutdoors3681 well, you got me drooling over that Trapdoor. I'm still in 1851 Navy and 12 Gauge break barrel land for a while....I did make a pound of powder this week though. I made a tutorial over on my Bitchute channel. Tried to post a link, but it was not allowed, LOL.

And I’m happy to hear your doing powder. I’m starting that again too. Used to dabble in it years ago. Hoping to get a ball mill next payday. This past Sunday I cast up 40 .69 cal roundball to use as media. Other than that, my last step is making some charcoal.

Why do you feel the need to anneal? I’ve reloaded 45-70s with Pyrodex RS for my Trapdoor, Ballard, and 86’ Winchester for years. They last a long time but do eventually get small cracks in the mouth, then I just shorten them to 45-60 length for my Uberti 76’ Win.
Didn't really feel the need. Just did it. I haven't done it since.
I understand crimping for a tubular magazine. What is the reason for crimping your cartridge for a single shot rifle?
Pressure.
WHat are you using to compress the charge?
Curious. Is annealing a must?
Depends on who ya ask... that's about as muddy as I can make the water! Just do some research on the reasons for it do what you think is best. This particular load is literally the only one I do it for.
