There's something about the preciousness, innocence and pure joy (in between bouts of hysterical madness and nerve wracking fury) about the early years of childhood. Something fleeting and intangible like the wind; able to stand one's hairs upon end and yet gone before we can quantify it. Captured in oil on canvas yet pierced with a wretched tear this painting was once, and will be again a testament to that moment. That is, if we can find a solution to a particularly tricky client-imposed limitation.

I believe that any long-time followers of the channel could competently deliver the narration for the process, start to finish by now.😊
And yet we still watch😊
@lindadority1056
And yet, we still don't mute the sound.
I think I could even do the Square Space commercial …at an appropriate time, of course
For me it's sort of like watching baseball. Or ballet. There are many familiar elements, but they are combined in different ways. And there is joy in seeing them executed with such skill and elegance.
@@glazdarklee1683 a very elegant way to put it. Thanks
I'm looking up at a portrait that Julian conserved for me right now. It was great to meet Julian in person. His knowledge and enthusiasm in assessing the portrait when I brought it in was infectious. To have that level of excitement after decades of doing this work speaks volumes. And the results were astounding.
Did he make a video of your painting? I'd love to see it!
I have a feeling that was very, very expensive.
Ooooohh...grabs the wine and pringles and settles in to watch.
Can I have some Pringles?
I read this as an order and almost went to get some
For me coffee and a small apple, please. ☺
Pour please 🍷🍷🍷🍷
Glass of whiskey for me.
Your self-control in not leaving a grime-layer 'beard' until the last bit of the first round of cleaning is truly inspiring.
He opted for the "infantile delinquent" look (11:53) instead, I think it's just as good!
Every single time I am amazed at the miracle that Julian performs.
The man is a wizard!!!!
My guess would be that this may be an image of a child that died young. The clouds at the bottom of the image and the child's sombre expression add to the feeling. It also may explain why the client was so concerned not to lose any of the back of canvas.
I found a family tree for Thomas Macy, and seems his youngest son died at just a year old
Could very well be! I thought it looked like a dress similar to a ballerina.
@@KayInMaine It seems to be both a piece of clothing and a cloud, flowing into each other.
I thought the same when I saw the clouds all around the child. Concerning when the painting was done it is pretty likely that this was the portrait of a deceased child.
@@pepperypeppers2755
Is it the same family who owned/owns the department store?
(English here, it's just that I've heard of the "Macy" parade at Christmas)
Have to give it to you - the square space joke was good. And the add was short and to the point
Holy moly that was one grimy painting! The cleaning alone was a huge improvement. The curl on the child’s hair is so stinking adorable. Love it!
9:00 Me: "Oh Julian is starting on the black".... "Wait thats not black"
The child looks just like one of the kewpie dolls that were popular at one time.
Yes! This artist was amazing!
I love the hesitantion at "keep the....oval strecher....square?" It was really funny
It's a testament to your skill as an artist that even up close, it's hard to see the retouching once it's done.
As Julian might maybe possibly say:
"My job is not to be an artist, ideally no one will ever know I worked on a painting at all. I'm a conservator."
And:
"A conservator's job is different from that of an artist. My job is to restore, to fix, to hide whereas an artist brings their imagination onto canvas, acts a creator, bringing life to an empty plane."
I think the bigger compliment would be to praise his technical skill and touch as a conservator rather than an artist. ;)
Imagine being a teenager into adulthood having to see that painting of yourself hanging in the family parlor every time guests come. The cleaning and repair is Masterfully done. I hope the client loves it.
Imagine bringing your girlfriend home.😅
And people think having your Mum get out the family photo albums is embarrassing.
Lucky for her she died hundreds of years ago.
I think it was a flex back then.
?? Don't families usually have childhood photos around? People wouldn't necessarily know the baby is you.
She is painted in heaven so that wont be much of a problem.
Mom: "We have Squarespace at home."
Squarespace at home: *Ovalspace*
RE your intro, "and I may just learn something along the way" -- I was a carpenter for 50+ years, and there wasn't a workday that I didn't learn something. With passion comes learning, and that's the journey no matter what your craft.
Do you think carpentry needs formal education? I'm all uni-ed out but it's a constant fascination of mine and my favourite hobby. Always feels like a difficult industry to enter though
The results are stunning. How nice that it's been restored to its best presentation. Long live the memory of the sitter.
the talent behind this restoration is out of this world... the care.. the ethical handling... the precision... the future restoration thinking... it's such a treasure to watch.
I cannot for the love of me fall asleep watching ASMR, I used to be able to, but now this is all that works for me. I have watched all of his videos multiple times over for the past couple of years. I believe since 2021. My curiosity has led to my first time commenting. I can't help but wonder if I am the only one here who watches Julian when going to bed, as a form of sed ASMR.
Nope, he’s my preferred nighttime listening, too. I find his voice very relaxing. I used to listen to baroque music to go to sleep, and couldn’t sleep if there was a human voice, even just singing. Now I need a voice for background, and Julian’s voice is perfect, calm and soothing.
just watching his videos makes me sleepy i swear, so i put him on in the background as i facetime my bf every night. he’s gotten used to it lmao
There once was a man in Nantucket,
Who painted his child and stuck-it
For many a day,
In a non-archival way,
And needed the whole thing conserved to restore its glory.
This is fine art, not a joke, Gerald.
By far your best segue into Squarespace. 😂👏
There is no greater satisfaction than watching you clean a dirty filthy painting and it come to life before my eyes.
Those ad transitions just sneak up on me and smack my head.
I am always in awe every time Julian nails a color match. Bravo,
Ahhhh one of the best before/after in a while!
I love applying things I've learned on youtube to life, last week I faked a hot table to flatten out a torn and stretched piece of linoleum flooring so I could then glue it back down. I used a hair dryer to heat it and relax it so it would flatten out and resume its original shape and a piece of hardwood plywood with some paint cans to weigh it down as it cooled. Worked a treat, and when I got in there with the glue, I was able to tuck the torn edge fluff under so it didn't show on the surface, almost invisible!
There is nothing more beautiful than a man wearing an apron and holding a vacuum. OMG! He irons too! He is too much! Tell me, what other superpowers do you have?
Very nimble fingers
An incredible eye for matching colour and texture.
Dad jokes.
He is a perfect android unit, but needs to be recharged every 12 hours by plugging him into the wall.
Inventing new tools to do what needs doing if nothing he has will quite do the job. Look up The Clampinator
the video Julian lookin dissapointed at voiceover Julian bcs Squarespace joke is amazing :D:D:D
Rarely do I laugh at a sponsor segue, but I scared my dog when I busted out laughing.
I looked away from the screen right when voiceover Julian started saying something about oval space and then square space. I realized what was coming up and looked back and went "A-ha! The sponsor!" and pointed at the screen...just as video Julian looked at the camera. For a second I felt the dissappointed look was for my reaction 😄
That was a funny moment/joke 😁
no matter how many videos come out i’m always impressed by the seamless transition into the squarespace promotion
Ahhhh thank god you got that little black dot on the chest. I was dying…
I'm always amazed at the retouching of the paint. For a few moments, I'm thinking, "I can totally tell where the damage was..." and a few minutes later, "Where did he retouch? I know it was over there somewhere..."
You did not mention that clouds at the bottom of a child’s painting of this era are sadly indicative that the child has died.
I didn't know that is what the clouds meant, but something about this painting told me the painting was of a child that had died. Now I have to watch it again to remember what I saw that gave me that impression.
@@zyggy64 Yes, the cloud and the lace gown makes him look quite angelic.
@@mumiemonstret I looked at the artist's paintings, and he has several people in the clouds.
Really I thought they were bubbles from bathtime!
Let us not ignore the fine art painter in Julian Baumgartner and celebrate his keen eye for the colors on the canvas! While we are forever amazed by his technical & restoration skills, it also requires the eye of an artist to pull off these restorations! Time and again we are impressed by his level of knowledge and skill that goes into the repairs; his understanding of old and new materials and their interaction with the environment over time, that we give less attention to his outstanding eye for color blending, layering, texture and paint flow across an image in restoring the paint loss. 🎨 👏👏👏👏Bravo, Julian, well done...once more😊 we'll done!
I am so glad you brought Julian's talent up. Mixing colors is such a devilishly difficult exercise: it's amazing how close you can get and still be off! He marries tint and texture seemingly so easily. Julian: have you ever worked on your own painting?
I find myself watching these videos with a combination of awe and a tinge of jealousy at the artistic talents of both Julian and the original artist of the piece being restored.
Did anyone else feel like this could be a painting of infant Kit? 😂 Adorable!
So beautifully painted and expertly cleaned.
Absolutely! The big eyes, very serious-minded but about to laugh, the hair, and trailing clouds of glory as she comes...gotta love her.
It's incredible how well grime and old varnish dulls and hides colour.
That first piano music by Schubert is faster than I'm used to!
I played the last piece on the flute as a teen and this is the first time I'm hearing what it's supposed to sound like
what piece is it?
@@ers0135 Impromptu in G-flat, D899/3
I'll be honest... I was multitasking and at the 12:15 point, I was actually shocked that I had forgotten that you had just cleaned the surface. It was an amazing transformation but even more so once you removed the old varnish. Beautiful work as always!
Isn’t that marvellous. That is so clever and the craftsmanship just brilliant. What an interesting profession to be an art restorer. Well done. Great work. 😊
6:58 Seeing that canvas getting flipped like pizza dough is weirdly satisfying 😂🍕
I marvel at JBs skill, knowledge, and exquisite narration. He makes something very complicated look easy, which of course, it is not; that is the subtle signature of a exceptionally talented maestro!
A tribute to a very talented artist, thanks to you Julian!
i'm always amazed by how well jullian can match the colour, to the point it's practically perfect. just blows me away every time. second best part of the video.
That is absolutely gorgeous. You did an amazing job on the restoration as always Julian.
im back to my baumgartner era i cant be bothered by anything now im immune to bad vibes
This is a beautiful painting made even more beautiful by your work
To the painting itself: I don't think that the child was alive when painted. This is giving me the vibes of a loving parent who wanted a keepsake of his beloved child.
At that time, children died so easily :(
But the childs gaze glancing at eternity, already far away, the body almost gone in the clouds, only the face and torso sticking out, saying a last goodbye:
That is a sad, but incredibly beautiful picture of the last loving memory of a beloved child.
I crowed when I saw the linen bridges, I just *knew* that had to happen--"belt and suspenders" approach is the perfect name for this double support for the tear.
Every time I watch your videos I get a range of emotions. At first when you apply your first layer of paint I grimace and think, what’s he done?!! That stands out so much! But then you go over it with a different shade and BANG! The damage has gone, you sir are a witch and what you do is witchcraft! Amazing
I know of no other conservator who takes so much care! - huge respect...
Always amazed at the before and after. Nice work!
One of my favourite episodes that child is adorable, the Mother must have loved of that painting!!
I love the way the paint re-touching makes the tear disappear right before my eyes. One minute it's gaping, next it's barely perceptible, then a few seconds later vanishes. Beautiful.
Every single time I’m amazed. The minute you start the paint touch ups, poof the tear disappears right before my eyes. You are so skilled, a true master craftsman.
Yeaaay!! Start my morning with my favorite conservator !
Every time i watch you do the retouching i am absolutely amazed. It never gets old. I KNOW there's a tear right there, i JUST saw it!! And yet, my eyes just cant find it any more
The color difference between dirty and finished is always so amazing!
This one was wonderful. You satisfied the customers needs and once again stripped the years from the canvas to reveal a jewel from time. Thank you. I enjoyed this restoration very much.
I love that you really need to be a jack of many trades to be a restorian ❤
Ahhh I miss this so much, there's definitely a lot of catching up to do on my part!! ☺️
I usually skip past the squarespace portion, but the pun was so good that I felt that it earned my viewership. Well done.
I cannot believe this painting was in storage. It is SO beautiful!
You are the best thing about Monday's! Thanks for sharing your passion and your expertise.
Julian is on the cutting edge of Squarespace related segue banter.
As miraculous as the whole job you do is, It's the color matching that I find the most masterful. Totally indistinguishable. I'm always in awe watching you do it.
I have see so many of your conservations but cleaning on this one was one of the most stunning. I'm thinking it was because of the simplicity of the beautiful face of the child. Just removing the most stunning difference. Thank you for sharing.
Well done!
It is always a pleasure to come along... Thank you for the extra effort to make that happen.
What a transformation. It was already a wonderful painting even with the dirt and damage, but oh how beautiful it is in it's glory. I am quite envious of it's owner! Thank you, Julian.
what a great restoration! I was waiting for a split reveal to show both the before and after halves, but you went with the central radius burst instead. had to pause and go back just to admire all the hard work you put in! you brought life back to this painting. someone loved that little boy so much to have this done to remember him by.
Damn you are so good at what you do! So incredible how there’s no way to tell where the damage was
CHILLS: The moment the child's face comes out from behind the grime at 12:08
What a superb restoration. As always, the dirtier and more damaged the painting is to start, the better the end result and this painting certainly followed that rule. Thank you for posting the video.
Beautiful job as always, Julian!!!
❤️❤️❤️👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yep, have seen Julian do this many times. Never gets old. Well done!
I needed this.
Really enjoyed the music you chose. The results of course were stunning as usual.
i am fully " locked " in to these episodes , just chills me right out........and what brilliant skill.........please dont stop putting up these restorations......
Beautiful work!and what a difference it’s made to the portrait.?The colours are really crisp and it’s almost like it’s just been painted. It will give pleasure for many more years to come now ..Great job as always 🥰
That ad transition was SMOOTH
Wow, the painting is absolutely breathtaking, I’m in awe of how someone could paint such lifelikeness. Your restoration was truly amazing. ❤
Those eyes so sad yet they made you feel as if the child was looking so deeply into your very soul, there is a depth to them that could not be seen with all of that crime that was covering it, then when the old varnish was removed there was a clarity to them that could not be seen before. What had this child seen that gave him such a sad look so deep and yet made him look so much older when just looking at his eyes. 12:07
They have a story he so badly wants to tell you but the passage of time has silenced his voice to us and all that is left is that deep longing left in his eyes, leaving you wishing that you could hear him tell you what it is he needs to say.
Julian your passion for restoring that which was almost lost and finding the words to tell the story behind the canvas gives the life back to the subject in question.
But those eyes of the child are haunted and sad all at the same time.
The stamp is absolutely gold! But the whole painting is beautiful!
ah, excellent. I too thought it would be a shame to lose that little bit of extra history.
Beautiful restoration work. You are always fascinating to watch, Julian
Even after all this time watching Julian's videos the retouching still seems miraculous.
It always makes me feel a little spooky when I look at a well done painting of a vibrantly alive sitter and then realize they've been dead over 100 years.
Painted in remembrance, restored to life. Excellent, truly masterful Julian! ❤
I've worked with frames for years, built thousands of them, handled thousands of prebuilt frames. But I've never seen a stretcher that was round. That's pretty great
Good Job, Mr. Baumgartener.
I love your page so much. It makes me feel connected to another world. It also brings me closer to my mother, who is an artist and enjoys videos like this. It makes me feel like no matter what- I will always have her with me no matter where I go when I watch these.
Phenomenal job!!! That year just disappeared! You have an amazing gift! Much love from Lake Cumberland Kentucky ❤
When I look at this painting, i definetly see that the family that commisoned it saw their child as a gift from heaven. Whether it was done as a way of mourning or just celebrating the life of this child, you can tell it gave comfort and joy to the people who gazed on it. Those previously unseen clouds seem to give it deeper meaning. Imagine them seeing their child this way as if to say "Here I am, doing fine, patiently waiting for mom and dad to hold me again". Beautiful work of art. Beautiful restoration!
your videos are my happy place! after a rough day at work I love coming home and seeing a new upload!
part of me thinks "I should be a conservationist!" but realistically I probably dont have the patience 😅 its always a joy to hear how knowledgeable you are with explaining the decisions made for cleaning, repairing, and painting! and the time lapses are always satisfying ❤
As a Professional Custom picture framer. I always enjoy watching your video’s. You restore and bring back the beauty of art, and I add to art works to enhance its beauty.
I love all of your work. And I know this wasn't your most complex by any means, but for some reason, the difference it makes between the before and after is so freaking incredible.
I just love watching the process. Thank you.
Would like to have seen it presented in a fab frame... brilliant job as always!
Your videos have helped me fall asleep many times when I have needed a nap. The video production and content is so relaxing and perfect when you have a stressful day. Thank you
I feel so happy to see a new video ❤
Oh , I just watched the ASMR version, wished i started on this one , so i'll watch this one with the comments :) LOL, loved that segway to the squarespace ad 😂
Best cleaning ever!!!!! Amazing.
Once again I am amazed, thank you.
A beautiful child, and just as beautiful a restauration! Kudos to you my friend!❤😊
