Just picked this up a decade too late. Great game if you like choppers and flight sims, not so great if you're expecting Call of Duty with an Apache. I can't hate on it but you are right, you gotta love helicopters to play this. Takes a lot of coordination however, if you can get through Assassins Creed with its crazy button combos and stick moves you can fly an Apache too. I think the game needed different preset settings for the controls for beginners. Takes a really soft hand so fiddling with the sensitivity helps somewhat. All in all, I enjoyed the f&*k out of this title for the Xbox 360.
I'll have to give this one a try. My first encounter with helicopter controls was the original Operation Flashpoint. "Takes some getting used to" is putting it lightly. If you pushed too far forward, you flipped your chopper and couldn't recover unless you were very far off the ground. So, yeah, I get what you're saying, Mark.
I love how when he was shooting the convoy of flatbeds they just kept driving along the road at a steady pace into the line of fire. No swerving or brake slamming.
Understanding how helicopters work and the physics of how they fly helps immensely with being able to control one lol. Flying 6channel rc helicopters is a huge learning curve...but that's apples to oranges compared to videogame physics and also with full scale attack choppahs. I just saw this game and then looked up the review and got here...looks pretty sweet. Nice review!
Does this game have a mission generator or better yet a random/dynamic campaign like the Gunship/Gunship 2000 games of the past? Or is it just a set of canned missions only?
Good review, I think I rent to begin with. I am a huge fan when it comes to flight sims, especially helicopter ones. I would love one day to find one that matches or beats the sim and gameplay of either Jane's Longbow or Gunship 2000, the ;ater letting you fly different helicopters.
I had Gunship on the commodore 64. The graphics were terrible, but the gameplay was amazing. I've still never found a flight sim that gave me the same satisfaction as popping up from behind a hill and annihilating eight enemy tanks and bugging out. Loved that game.
I actually tried this game about a week or two ago after watching a review you did on another helicopter game. I agree with you on everything, except for the objectives thing, it was pretty understandable to me.
2 things. First I didn't find the handbook of any great help when trying to work out how to target etc. 2nd not being able to mute the damn background music without muting all sound FX. To me, having this playing all time gave it that arcade feel. Apart from these 2 things it's not a bad game. I agree that it takes a long time to come to terms with flying the damn thing.
Is it true that this game has split screen multiplayer? I've been looking for more coop games for my PS3, not sure why I am looking at this one as I am the only one in my group of friends that can fly, but I still want to know. This game reminds me of Fireblade for the PS2, dang, I still need to buy that game too!
Although the controls worked fairly well once you got the hang of them, as a helicopter pilot I was really frustrated with how you turn....helicopters do not turn during forward flight by turning with the tail rotor, they roll sideways slightly, just like a plane does. While hovering, yeah, you turn by using the tail rotor :X Still fun blowing stuff up though.
when i tried the demo, it seemed like anything BUT an arcade style game. The features like bullet velocity and drop, bullet tracking, destructable environment, and collateral damage really encouraged me to want to buy this game but he is right that you need to be seriously interested in helos because there is a lot of multitasking going on
Comache! Is that the game that was made by novalogic? They had a tank simulator series, an fps series (delta force), a flight simulator series and then the comache series. Damn i spent alot of my childhood playing those games xD
True but you can climb way way higher on realistic mode. enemies would have a hard time hitting you but your machine gun would not be that effective if enemies are out of reach though.
I was looking forward to this game, but then I found out about the game's ultra-hardcore control setup. To me, Just Cause 2 had the best helicopter controls and I think this game would have been more accessable had it used that control scheme.
Thank You Activivsion for listening to the old school gamers and the release of cool old style type gaming in modern graphics........ now if only Activision could buy the patent for Thunderforce 6 so we in the United States could play such a wonderful game. In a perfect world maybe. BTW I'll be picking up Apache Air Assult up and I have no plans for MOH because I agree with Mark that playing a game about a modern war where our troops are fighting and dying is ironic,
ive waited year after year for a helicopter game coming to a console....about time we got something different to the usual run of the mill 1st, 3rd person shooters out there.
I enjoy it, he is right that the game could use some refinement, but the multi-tasking is very realistic I mean for god sakes apache pilots use their eyes seperate from each other. I got the controls quickly, but I switched the sticks in the options menu and turned the gunner time to 4 as well. Also it does help if you like helicopters, probably one of the closest portrayals to the actual handling of a real helicopter in video game, equal to or better than FSX!
@nerd8980 Mostly yes, the British models of not only AH-1's but AH-64x's. Apaches are used only by the British and U.S.A. ... The U.S. flies Apache AH-64 Longbow model which I want to say is the newest model of Apache. Most of our Apache's are equiped with what we call bunker busters ( large bombs that go underground and explode) and hellfire missiles. If we go on fire missions we Have the standard 6 hellfires, 4 AT4 missiles and 2 launcher tubes of rockets.
I think the reason the controls are so difficult is because they are quite realistic. the way the left control stick (or flight joystick, on PC) is described sounds just like the cyclic (the control in a helicopter that tilts it front/back, left/right), and the right stick sounds like a combination of the rudder pedals (yaw left/right) and the collective (up/down). It looks closer to a simulator. A video game optimized for ease of play and clarity of objective. Flying a real helicopter is not.
@yugiohbros115 The navigation system didn't get much attention. A player should, at least, be able to bring up the satellite view and see some easily identifiable markers for probable target/enemy positions, AO borders, FARPs and home bases. Ideally, they would've just integrated this into the HUD like a normal flight sim. An arrow on the heading indicator has worked fine for years. Why would they change that?
have you played Co-Commanche? It's old ass game, but it's alot of fun. Because it does kind of feel like you got someone else helping you unlike this game. Since there are two pilots...
@xkrazyxboix101 kinda. There's 2 control modes. Training and realistic. Training is for most people. Its alot like the controls for bc 1 but a little more restrictive and unrealistic to make it easier to fly. If you're used to bc 1 and want something like that go for training. Realistic is honestly not that hard if you know how to use it but for most people it feels natural because of the controls are not traditional. If you're unsure try the demo on xbl
I'm not a big fan of flight sim games... I was on and off about getting this game, but I traded in some games last week and got this... I gotta say I am on like mission 4 or 5 and the game is fun... I think the co-op thing looks interesting also...Game does have a learning curve so if you're not patient and are expecting something like Hawx or Ace Combat, avoid this game at all costs... For me this is something new and I am def enjoying it.
I think im going to try this one on the PC. Controls should work better too with the possibilities the PC comes with. I'm going to undust my Joystick baby!
who is this guy? hes not sure why the helicopter is off center? he said that at the exact moment in the video where he was zooming past it to make an accuate shot. i guess you'd like a facefull of rotor when you zoom in?
I agree it ..well it isn't my game. But it looks pretty darn good. The reality of Consoles having limited controls aside.. yeah it looks good plays well.
I know that this is complaining about a review one year later, but why did you not play Normal or Veteran? The controls are drastically different and those are the real controls that you should be playing by. Recruit, as shown in video, are meant for people who just really need a crutch.
would be cool if you could cause destruction .... like blow shit up on a more massive scale than just a missile explosion. blow up ships, buildings, actually change the way the terrain looks ...I'd love to see some burning jungles and trees... craters in the ground... a huge skyscraper just collapsing or getting leveled completely. . . It looks awesome as it is but I feel like it would lose it's appeal if you play it for hours because there's not enough satisfaction in all the damage you cause.
I played that many times as well. I think it uses 3d voxel at the time it was the norm. good game but the flir gun on this apache is more realistic like what you see on youtube killing off insurgents.
Just picked this up a decade too late. Great game if you like choppers and flight sims, not so great if you're expecting Call of Duty with an Apache. I love the smell of Classic Game Room in the Morning
The graphics look amazing! I need to get me a PS3.
There's a damn good reason why attack helicopters have two pilots.
One day I want to compile all of Mark's video game ideas andput them into a long epic CGR game!
That would be cool! Kind of like the AVGN video game.
It’s 12-11-2021 and I just bought this game brand new and sealed .
@lsi624 Are you trying the Training controls or the Realistic controls? The plane is really hard to fly in Training.
@JoshuaMutter What trophy is that from? And AC:Brotherhood has one called Plumber
@cliffedward I play the game without music all the time. Which version were you playing?
I love how when he was shooting the convoy of flatbeds they just kept driving along the road at a steady pace into the line of fire. No swerving or brake slamming.

The auto-hover machine gun sounds absolutely fantastic ,, very realistic
Does this game have a mission generator or better yet a random/dynamic campaign like the Gunship/Gunship 2000 games of the past?
Or is it just a set of canned missions only?
@CoDcomrade2 It's in Assassin's Creed 2 when you first meet Mario.
Good review, I think I rent to begin with.
I am a huge fan when it comes to flight sims, especially helicopter ones. I would love one day to find one that matches or beats the sim and gameplay of either Jane's Longbow or Gunship 2000, the ;ater letting you fly different helicopters.

are the controls anything similar to batttlefield 2 or 3 ? cause im used to those controlles
Is the an option to set the controls to lefty so it's more similar to BF3 controls?
I actually tried this game about a week or two ago after watching a review you did on another helicopter game. I agree with you on everything, except for the objectives thing, it was pretty understandable to me.
This reminds me of one of my favorite NES games “FireHawk”. I may have to see if I can find this for cheap and try it out.
@CoDcomrade2 Maybe. 'It's-a me! Mario!' is also a good one.
@kinghomsar u in the u.s. and not its not a plus exclusive?
Does this use an online code to play online PS3? Thinking about getting it used but want to play online as well.
this permonace of the march of the valkiryes is weird.you didn't found the platoon one?
2 things. First I didn't find the handbook of any great help when trying to work out how to target etc. 2nd not being able to mute the damn background music without muting all sound FX. Fraps?
plz answer
@Ps3GamerVideos Cant you just go into auto hover and lower down in elevation..?
@RainMan52 wheres the demo?
what this song in 0:17 - 0:40 ?
Is it true that this game has split screen multiplayer? I've been looking for more coop games for my PS3, not sure why I am looking at this one as I am the only one in my group of friends that can fly, but I still want to know.
This game reminds me of Fireblade for the PS2, dang, I still need to buy that game too!
@absolutereviews No worries man, I'm glad I could help you out. Peace. Sorry if I was a bit brusque with my presumption.
Are you using a joystick? flightstick? keyboard-mouse? joypad?
Although the controls worked fairly well once you got the hang of them, as a helicopter pilot I was really frustrated with how you turn....helicopters do not turn during forward flight by turning with the tail rotor, they roll sideways slightly, just like a plane does. While hovering, yeah, you turn by using the tail rotor :X Still fun blowing stuff up though.
You get to fly a hind, awesome. I am seriously going to get this.
is this for the vectrex
when i tried the demo, it seemed like anything BUT an arcade style game. The features like bullet velocity and drop, bullet tracking, destructable environment, and collateral damage really encouraged me to want to buy this game
but he is right that you need to be seriously interested in helos because there is a lot of multitasking going on
The dinosaurs idea is actually the setting of the game Prehistoric Isle for Neo Geo, a sidescrolling shmup where you control a helicopter.
Comache! Is that the game that was made by novalogic? They had a tank simulator series, an fps series (delta force), a flight simulator series and then the comache series. Damn i spent alot of my childhood playing those games xD
you forgot the customization. you can put decals on the heli, and even choose camos
@Aussiboy182 You can swap the actions of the two sticks if that's what you mean. I don't play BF3.
I'm having fun with this game, although I need to keep it on the 'training' difficulty as 'realistic' is a bit touchy and feels wonky.
True but you can climb way way higher on realistic mode. enemies would have a hard time hitting you but your machine gun would not be that effective if enemies are out of reach though.
LOVE YOUR REVIEWS DUDE! also this game looks great :D Keep the reviews coming mate!!! thumbs up all the way!!!!
what does RPG (the missile) stand for? No way it stands for role playing game missile.
This games looks just like Il2 Sturmovik: Birds of Prey.
Is there any chance it's made by the same team?
yup russians made it
whats the song at 0:02-10
While you were talking about "Yeah, I love explosions!," you really remind me of Dean from Code Monkeys.
is ther CO-OP & multyplayer?
I was looking forward to this game, but then I found out about the game's ultra-hardcore control setup. To me, Just Cause 2 had the best helicopter controls and I think this game would have been more accessable had it used that control scheme.

You are the best game reviewer out their
ive waited year after year for a helicopter game coming to a console....about time we got something different to the usual run of the mill 1st, 3rd person shooters out there.
"You have earned a trophy: Got To Da Choppa!"
Epic
LOL!!! just yesterday i checked your channel for this game xD
i didnt find it, i was like :[
and today u upload it..
xDD
@TheZorseWhisperer It's on the PlayStation Store.
I enjoy it, he is right that the game could use some refinement, but the multi-tasking is very realistic I mean for god sakes apache pilots use their eyes seperate from each other. got this on the 360. It works well with the cyborg fly 9 flight stick. it recognizes the controller and has its ow n set up for it. still tough to fly
the developer of this game also worked on Wings of Prey which just bought off Steam (it was ons sale for $14)
that game looks great on pc
nice review!
@Indead I agree dude, I picked it up yesterday, it will need a multi-part review! It literally makes Black Ops look quaint!
I love this game.
2
I enjoyed it-took some practice but was fun

I like your voice, it makes me feel safe
@yugiohbros115

Awesome! Exploding stuff with helicoptors! I better download the demo. Thanks, Mark.
'Apache Vs Dinosaur' lol Will pass this one by on the strength of this review. Many thanks
ok... its offical... ur the best reviewer out there. ign and gamespot should be ashamed
@sims3ps3NG Wouldn't you guys rather wait until he's played it for several weeks and has a crap ton of content and can do a massive multipart review?
have you played Co-Commanche? It's old ass game, but it's alot of fun. Because it does kind of feel like you got someone else helping you unlike this game. Since there are two pilots...
i like how the convoy at the back have no reaction to attack at 1:26
This game looks pretty cool, mowing dudes down with the machine guns looks hillarious.
BADDA BADDA BADDA BADDA!!!!......"Got that person."
Also the theme song of Simcopter :)

i lolled my ass of when it opened with the trophy "hot to da chopppa"
;P
you remind me of the guy off "how to annoy people on modern warfare 2" on Machinima
this game is good if you are into simulation...I haven't bought the full game yet..but I've been playing the demo for 3 week now..and can't get enough
I'm not a big fan of flight sim games... I was on and off about getting this game, but I traded in some games last week and got this... I gotta say I am on like mission 4 or 5 and the game is fun... you should occasionally do some game give aways.
@abrahamnegrete its a big game you know, it could take a while to make a review for it....
who is this guy? hes not sure why the helicopter is off center? he said that at the exact moment in the video where he was zooming past it to make an accuate shot. i guess you'd like a facefull of rotor when you zoom in?
@Dmouseacorn And Zeitgeist too. They're about tied.
Soviet Strike, Nuclear Strike....oh the memories so, so long ago.
Long ago..... would be desert strike
Plaid this game for seven Years til now.
@james65508 Why don´t you download demo, try it, and see for yourself. Just and advice: Try it on realistic setting, because on training it is boring.
the 360 is just now getting this game
wth?
thanks dude
I agree it ..well it isn't my game. But it looks pretty darn good. The reality of Consoles having limited controls aside.. yeah it looks good plays well.
anygame with the achievement "get to ca choppa" is worth something in my books
I know that this is complaining about a review one year later, but why did you not play Normal or Veteran? The controls are drastically different and those are the real controls that you should be playing by. Recruit, as shown in video, are meant for people who just really need a crutch.
It's like a more advanced Desert Strike/Jungle Strike/Urban Strike
Hell yeah! Apache vs. dinosaurs!!!!!!!!!! We all want it!
lol...this guy is so hilariously entertaining, it's ridiculous.
"Apache II - kills more dinosaurs before 7 am than most meteorites do all millennium."
@randomenvelope rpg is also rocket-propelled grenade
@CervantesXV but still i don't hear him talking about the bad part of the game you know what i mean he just rambles on and on....
If you wanna see Helicopters killing dinosaurs, you should play Prehistoric Isle 2 for the Neo Geo. Cheers!
The texturing and detail on the ground leaves a lot to be desired.
would be cool if you could cause destruction .... like blow shit up on a more massive scale than just a missile explosion. blow up ships, buildings, actually change the way the terrain looks ...I'd love to see some burning jungles and trees... craters in the ground... a huge skyscraper just collapsing or getting leveled completely. . . Commanche 4 for PC was the far superior 3D attack chopper game, and that came out many years before this.
I played that many times as well. I think it uses 3d voxel at the time it was the norm. good game but the flir gun on this apache is more realistic like what you see on youtube killing off insurgents.
