    I love Tim Key. He was such an inspired choice for a Partridge foil.
    Steve was saying, on the Off Menu podcast, that as a comedian you can normally watch other comedy acts and, even when they're great, you think "ok I see what they did, why that was funny" but Tim Key has an inscrutable delivery where you find yourself laughing with no idea why.

      @@RosieHarp Nah. Del Boy will always be a long way ahead of David Brent, and there's an argument that Alf Garnett is up there too, behind Del, but most people are too young to remember him these days.🤔 Also don't forget Blackadder, Hancock, and Basil Fawlty either.
      It's a very subjective list, especially if you take the whole history of British TV sitcoms into account.

    • @RosieHarp
      @RosieHarp 10 месяцев назад

      @@EnglishMike Hancock is a bit before my time, was he a character? I've watched clips, I thought it was just him playing himself. I barely remember Alf Garnet.
      Yes Fawlty was definitely top 3. My view of Blackadder changed because I now can't stand the actor who played him because of the Bean nonsense, but I loved it at the time, particularly the Elizabethan era. Del Boy .....not a fan, never was, although John Sullivan was a great writer.

    • @EnglishMike
      @EnglishMike 10 месяцев назад

      @@RosieHarp Technically, Anthony John (Tony) Hancock played a character called Anthony Aloysius Hancock in his scripted TV sitcoms -- basically a holdover from his earlier (immensely popular) radio sitcom series, Hancock's Half Hour
      He was before my time too (he was only 44 when he died), though his radio show is still available on BBC Radio 4's website.
      The Office's brand of very awkward humour (which I very much enjoyed) means that it will always be less popular than the near universally loved Only Fools and Horses, so Del Boy will always get more love than David Brent, but of course, greatness is a very subjective term.
      Gervais does get a lot of credit for popularizing that type of awkward fly on the wall mockumentary style sitcom.

    It's always weird seeing outtakes of Alan Partridge stuff. I KNOW he's Steve Coogan. Deep down I know that. But my mind has always separated them. I always forget Alan isn't a real person so it always baffles me when I see evidence of that. Bye.

    The fact that I find Susannah Fielding so hard to like even when she's being herself in interviews and stuff speaks volumes to how well her and the writers realised the character of Jennie.
