As simulation and digitalization is more affordable and integrated in R&D flow, we increasingly see companies in the field expanding their design capabilities with predictive software.
Particleworks, the mesh-less CFD solver presented can allow for highly viscous fluids simulations as well as powder deposition and removal.
In the project, we worked on a Nature pubblication by the Wyss Institute at Harvard and we replicated their approach.
Moreover, other techniques other than Polymer Filament Deposition could be investigated, leveraging the coupled powder/airfield solver embedded in the software.
By using digitalization, the research team at Harvard can perform analysis of different processing parameters (like nozzle rotation speed and deposition flowrate) to optimize the design of the extruded polymer.
Jurystatement: “ ‘3D Printed helices’ opens the way for making new composite materials by understanding the rheology and extrusion while running geometric paths to print multi-material, adding a twist to 3D printing and unlocking new innovative applications!
