86 YO Romanian peasant Tofan Magdalena from the village of Iaslovăț. Bucovina hand spinning wool off a distaff by use of an old traditional manual spindle.

Update: In loving memory of Magdalena Tofan, we are saddened to announce her passing on Friday, July 2, 2021, at the age of 90. Magdalena was one of the last authentic Romanian peasants who loved to share the knowledge she acquired throughout her life. May she rest in peace!

No wealthy women in New York have such grace!
And her clothes she has on are so beautiful! Romanian people go back BC times! Grace is carved in them, can't be bought with money!

She's our grandmother. Her age makes her forget recent memories but remember things from the distant past. She recalls details from ww2 as if it was yesterday.

Actually, she's spinning with a spindle "off" of her distaff, not "on" her distaff. A distaff holds the fibre while the spinner drafts the fibre from the distaff.

This is so interesting. I use a spurtzleur to spin sometimes (it requires less space than a drop spindle) and this is very like the technique I use. The fibre is twisted close to the spindle/spurtzleur, which is never dropped, but twisting the tool in your hand. I use a wooden distaff , not as impressive as this one, but still functional.
