V.S. is one of the most respected minds in all of neuroscience. His name is often uttered in the same breath as some of the most enduring names in the history of science. His insightful experiments, coupled with his ability to boil the complex down to the super simple, has made him one of the most sought after lecturers living today. He has done multiple TED talks and, like Michael Faraday, Thomas Huxley, and countless Nobel Laureates before him, he has had the immensely grand honor of being invited to give a Friday evening discourse at the Royal Institution of Great Britain.
Additionally, he was the Gifford Lecturer of 2012, an honor reserved for history's brightest minds that dates back to the 1800s and has included such legendary figures as Niels Bohr, Roger Penrose, Werner Heisenberg, and Carl Sagan. He obtained his PhD from Trinity College at Cambridge, received two additional honorary doctorates, as well as the Henry Dale Medal. Richard Dawkins once called him "The Marco Polo of Neuroscience." He is the Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition, a distinguished professor with a Psychology Department and Neurosciences Program at UC San Diego and is an adjunct Professor of Biology at the Salk Institute. V.S. is also the best-selling author of The Tell-Tale Brain, Phantoms in the Brain, and A Brief Tour of Human Consciousness.

@@TomBilyeu would you say "disorders" such as "anxiety" would not be a negative thing as a disorder but more in less a way your brain has created a new pathway for your mind to take control of your body? As an example I suffered with anxiety to the point where my nose would bleed and I would fear that I'm dying and until I accepted that F@#$ it I might die who cares and actually researched the disorder I realize that anxiety helps slow down my logic but yet speeds up the calculations on what I say and do.

Very refreshing to see someone whose success is not measured in the number of items sold, games won etc, but sometime who is humbly leaving his passion day by day, helping people and finding time to appreciate poetry. He feels complete and happy, and driven more by curiosity and compassion rather than desperate will to make an impact on the world. So instead of asking him how to manipulate your brain for practical reasons I would really ask him how to be so happy and not to be distracted by the conventional image of success

He has an amazing way of making the complex so entertaining. I also absolutely admire your ability to engage someone like VSR into giving a provoking understanding of this mystery called our brain. This wonderful clinician has his office just up the hill from our home. Although I'd been diagnosed with three so-called, "suicide diseases", including trigeminal neuralgia, for which surgery & irradiation had proved ineffectual, we were watching a local PBS documentary on which Ramachandran was the central expert. I'd had enough of neurological pain & problems but whilst watching this man, who worked so close to our home, describe yet another condition which I had & which was later confirmed in a clinical setting that I also had two different kinds of synesthesia.

sometimes i'm put off by tom's interruptions
but many other times i'm actually glad he asks the questions he asks
he brings it back into the practical and the applicable, which is the whole point of this show (actualizing potential, not just knowing you have it)
yes, by using himself as an example and relating it to his experience...
but this is still helpful because we can put ourselves in his shoe or interpret his experience, and it's better than hearing just the theory in a vacuum
anyway, amazing insights by V.S. Ramachandran

I have always loved studying the brain and its functions, and have been told for years that if you are an accountant you are naturally horrible at art/creativity because the brain 'doesn't work that way.' Well, I stopped being an accountant after 20 years to pursue my true passion of being an artist.I am 2 years in on a full time basis of it. Artists are people that manipulate their brains in a way to see what is ACTUALLY there rather than what our brain 'fills in' and tells us is there... and then puts that reality on paper/canvas. From a young age I have taught my son how to use that way of thinking and he has become quite the artist.
Anyway, I said all of that to say this... thank you for bringing on people who dig below the surface and spell out the real truths of what it takes MENTALLY to make your physical body respond to what you are trying to accomplish. Powerful.

For years I suffered with painful heart burn. It disturbed my sleep and caused no end of discomfort. Doctors put me on esomeprazole to reduce acid. It helped a little. During a holiday in Thailand I went to a pharmacy to buy some. The Thai pharmacist asked me if I'd been tested for helicobacter pylori. No. When I told her I came from Perth in Western Australia she smiled and said it was two Perth doctors who received the Nobel prize for discovering how to cure this and was amazed that my doctor hadn't done this for me. She gave me a course of antibiotics and esomeprazole which I finished in 2 weeks. I've never had heartburn or indigestion since then and I can eat anything I want.. That was 10 years ago. No antacids, no medication since then.

I am a lawyer and a published novelist and this talk reminded me of my fascination with metaphor and the power of language- how it uncovers the workings of the brain. Lakoff's Metaphors we live by is a brilliant read on this which came to mind. How the brain works, how it interprets the world really isn't what we think. Keep going. I'm really into your work.

I think Tom Bilyeu did construct his interview very well and always does!!! I have watched all of his shows and he always shows the utmost respect to all of his guests - he is just enthusiastic about having this amazing Neuroscientist on his show. It's his show. Thank you again so I can now buy the books you mentioned. Tom is amazing and changed my life too - let's show gratitude that we have someone like Tom -which is free to watch - love from the UK

A great example of someone using another person just to talk about himself. Your personal life doesn't really matter, Tom. It is not relevant. You have a great humble scientist in front of you and you keep refering to yourself as if the show was a way to convince us of how great you are. An ego trap.

These have been exactly the keys of what fuels me in life in the most profound way so much so that I don't think I could survive without them... I find they are THAT fundamental, necessary, and epically vital to me... So this was a wonderfully grounding thing to hear... Thank YOU!!!

    • @imapunjabi

I believe he is passionate about peotry because it is all about bridging and metaphors. Poetry ties in with your senses that send signals to your brain. That in return causes your brain to react in a way that can improve your state but also worsen it. Its all about working in unison with your environment to overcome. That's where the example of having the mirrors at a right angle and staring at the bridge of your nose comes in. You'd need practice to overcome the fact that you won't be able to move your head.
      Hope this helps!!

    Hello Tom,
I am listening when someone like you is talking about the importance of knowing the brain for self-development. I have been resisting this for a long time even though I've always been interesting in biases. Now you convinced me, I'm going to put this knowledge on my path. I was too focused on the psychological part. I underestimated the importance of the hardware. Thanks.

Visualization is a technique used by spiritual practitioners as well. As a musician, If I want to create a new melody, I try to visualize it, not necessarily, I will get it, by the triggered thought process continues and it will click at an interaction with situation or nature or just while driving. Fascinating interview. Loved it.

Tom's questions and inputs are so insightful. Since I love his creative mind in drawing from readings and intuitive insights, I appreciate all his interjections of person experience and putting concepts in context in an approachable and conversational style. The comments the criticize his approach is absurd. This is his style and his show, which some people really enjoy and love.
I must also say Dr. Ramachandran was also fascinated with the practical applications that Tom is honing in on with razer focus.

Such an AMAZING interview! I never heard before of Ramachandran, but am a Dual Dominance trainer (LearnLefty.com) and am studying how the Corpus Collosa grows. Funny, I lived in San Diego for 14 years and have been on UCSD campus many times, which is such a beautiful campus next to Torrey Pines. A must visit for out-of-towners (but no 'Zonies, haha). Geisel Hall is one of my favorite buildings and is named in honor of Dr. Suess.
